Does it have some sort of timing mechanism (like a clock escapement?) or do you need to crank the wheel at a very steady pace?
The speed/tempo of the song is built into the “file” while punching the holes. The operator needs only to keep the crank at a constant speed, with maybe some slowing or speeding up depending on the operator’s feeling.
What do you use to punch your books?

@@jdcorganist sort of... at least there used to be. Search for Bob Essex MIDster - but overall it doesn't seem too complicated and folks have even found ways to use off-the-shelf laser-cutters to do the job
