Glasses are really versatile. First, you can have glasses-wearing girls take them off and suddenly become beautiful, or have girls wearing glasses flashing those cute grins, or have girls stealing the protagonist's glasses and putting them on like, "Haha, got your glasses!' That's just way too cute! Also, boys with glasses! I really like when their glasses have that suspicious looking gleam, and it's amazing how it can look really cool or just be a joke. I really like how it can fulfill all those abstract needs. Being able to switch up the styles and colors of glasses based on your mood is a lot of fun too! It's actually so much fun! You have those half rim glasses, or the thick frame glasses, everything! It's like you're enjoying all these kinds of glasses at a buffet. I really want Luna to try some on or Marine to try some on to replace her eyepatch. We really need glasses to become a thing in hololive and start selling them for HoloComi. Don't. You. Think. We. Manga's pretty mainstream in Japan and isn't really associated with otaku (there's manga and then there's otaku manga), so it's definitely more her being cool than "already" into "weebshit".

While it’s become to a lesser degree in recent years, watching anime, especially above the age of like 12 is something foreigners don’t really do. Since we surround ourselves in it, we don’t really notice, but there are more people who have little to do with anime than people who watch anime, even a bit. Even more so for manga, since it’s so expensive overseas
@@harrya9458 That doesn’t include everyone. A lot of people I know still watch anime because as a kid they watched shounen anime including myself. Maybe that’s your experience and people you know or don’t know had the same, but it doesn’t matter how much we surround ourselves in it or how much we watch it. It depends on the person. And otaku isn’t a positive word at all, America changed the definition to make it sound like your interested in their culture. Otaku has been changed just like Hentai and bukkake in America. And Weeb is a American version of otaku, Japan have been exposed to more foreign media, so the word isn’t obscure at all.

They all seemed perfectly reasonable to me. I think even most otakus would be too embarrassed to ride in that itasha.
I suspect the majority of otakus/anime fans still have a certain shame for their hobby. The dudes who do cosplay at the anime conventions are likely still the minority, but this is the impression in which most people have of anime fans (loosely interchangeable with otakus).
That said, preferring a normal car is not the equivalent to having shame for the hobby of owning an otaku car. Some people just want to opt for the more sustainable option that is owning a normal car. I think it's fine if this person is well-off and can afford to purchase 2 or 3 cars all by him/herself.
That one's really a bit much, even by itasha standards, I think. :)

That's how it is in Japan. But I have to point out that when they mention with glasses like that, they actually meant that really geek looking glasses with bad hair with lower than average looks, too skinny/fat and foul body odor. Not your average glasses guy with kept hair and usually polo shirt (this is also could be considered an otaku appearance but the public views this as some of a dad or some CEO of a company who went to a golf session). It's a Japanese kind of common sense.

Something people need to realize is there will always be exceptions. Humans love seeing things in black&white, & they dont realize there's always the possibility of being an exception.
I knew girls who said they'd never date anime fans, until they came across an anime fan who was cool & had a great personality. It's not the anime-watching that turns alot of girls off, it just so happens that ALOT of "weebs" are just awkward weirdos--and THAT'S what turns people off.
There's a good amount of "weebs" who have healthy social lives, are good-looking, etc, and these are the weebs who I always see in relationships.
So if you're a weeb having love troubles, there's hope, but at the same time, be honest with yourself & ask "is it my anime hobby that's turning people off, or something else? "

saying "if it's for work then it's ok but if it's a hobby, it's not ok" is such a sad line of thinking. hobbies are meant to make you happy and improve on your skills. if you don't approve of that then maybe you should work on reevaluating your own lifestyle first lol.
I think that's only the literal meaning, not the whole meaning: Implied meaning from these ladies is: "The man's behaviour is suggesting to me that he prefers a lot of his time (excessively so) to "play" instead of "working hard to achieve goals via PRODUCTIVE use of time". Now again assumption is that these woman are not time-wasting because their biological clock ticks fast, they must be serious in their choices: They think there is a difference between a hobby you do for PART of your leisure time vs a hobby that one spends ALL their leisure time doing. Thus suggests they are seeking men who have a range of interests that are compatible with the woman's potential goals - for one very trite example: What is the lady going to say to her female peer group about her new romantic partner that will impress them? He could be interested in this Otaku stuff but also be productive in other areas because they don't spend all their time on one thing.
I think perhaps one of the potential negatives of Otaku is some sort of perception that it is juvenile or else passive consumption instead of demonstrating a work ethic that also translates into success in other areas of life eg workplace or social life or competitive fields or creative fields?
I do not disprove what you say, but merely try to see it from the "eyes of the ladies" who have choice preferences that are more strongly slanted away from Otaku Sub Culture.
I would say I am fairly interested in a lot of things and the creativity in anime/manga is wonderful but I would draw the line considering one of those extreme cars (extreme identification) or a huge collection (hoarding) for example of sympathetic agreement.
The good thing is that if someone has their sub-culture and it is fulfilling they are in a position to find someone who IS compatible with their chosen life style over someone who is clearly not.
@@commentarytalk1446 I know you're trying to "see it from the eyes of the ladies" here because, I'm gonna be real, I didn't ask and it just reaffirms to me how sad this line of thinking is. Because personally, as an artist, spending time on doujinshi to better your skill in the field *as a hobby* is one of the most productive things you can do with your time when you're off work because you can use it to make money in the future. If anything, that would just prove to people that they have an excellent work ethic because I could _never_ do that.

However, what I'm trying to parse here via hints and variable context scenarios (ie different parameters) and indirect indications is: Where do these ladies draw-the-line?
1. It depends on personal experience: Tolerance may be higher or lower depending on previous experience. Thus it's not right to judge people who have a low tolerance for their personal reasons. Or else if they are older they have through experience narrowed the "pool" to their more clear preferences. In this case a definite "NO." saves everybody from pain or disappointment thus you can interpret it as practically good even if you think it is "narrow minded".
2. The ladies who were open to the suggest first of all abstracted "Any hobby could be more or less fine so this must also apply to Anime/Manga or Otaku-Sub-Culture. They went with it. But as the questions increased information, they adopted different lines beyond they also ended up saying No. Eg that car-thing or collecting/hoarding behaviour. Collecting could be fine as said if presented like a Museum - but hoarding can indicate a pathology too of the mind. Equally Otaku could be "arrested development" thus reducing potential success of a relationship.
I think therefore the spectrum of response is honest and complex ie shades of grey. Those who first of all say No may give explicit reasons "It disgusts me!" which anyone could interpret as "predjudice" but bear in mind even those are honest responses for the benefit of the person saying this: They may have good reasons for feeling this way as they also struggle to find a romantic partner while they cannot afford to lose time doing so!
That line made me understand why it's common knowledge that most mangakas never talk about their job and stay anonymous

The moral of the story here is, everyone has their own views on how an otaku looks/acts. Some were open and varying on levels, while the others just went on with the stigma.
I think that is a superficial analysis of people.
1) General question which is applicable: ANY hobby can be fine for ANY romantic/relationship partner. This is not asked but it is IMPLICIT. Some ladies understand this thus are pacific in their replies as well reasonable in their thinking. I'm always impressed with Japanese ladies = how they can behave considerately and intelligently - so often and in such high frequency of different people.
2) Specific question concerning Otaku Culture: This might not fit the lifestyle or aspirations a woman has in her partners. What possible reasons could be so? The women all universally whether agree or disagree with 1) don't mention specific reasons but give general life style differences to this. The women who agree: They say I could see myself accommodating IN PRINCIPLE. The women who disagree: They don't specify but I think there's good reasons why they would not:
2) a) The culture might be seen as juvenile and the woman wants a man who is mature eg given: The man should invest time in productive contribution to the relationship if the time invested in Otaku is so large b) The identity of the Otaku might be so extremely involved in Otaku which could be too alienating for the woman who has more conventional taste in lifestyle. c) There could be many examples of negative characteristics the woman has seen of Otaku that she wishes to avoid so makes a rule of thumb choice about avoiding this relationship scenario.
3) The women who elaborated via 2) but still agreed IN PRINCIPLE provide useful insights: They don't want it to be selfish or obsessive or destructive or lacking in growth. For exampl compromises such as "We could have conversational topics about it" or "if it provides time for me to do my own hobbies that is fine" or "I would not wish it to be hidden from me" etc.
Personally I think it comes down to SUB-CULTURES and peoples' search for SELF-IDENTITY and acknowledgement/acceptance and recognition of self and others to share with each other. That is a wonderful thing for people that is needed and sub-cultures can make for strong group bonds. However, I think over-identifying in ONE NARROW area of life runs the risk of reducing adaptability and growth of self in other areas.
I would guess a woman would want to see a potential Significant Other (SO) as someone who expresses those qualities of adaptation and growth so they can build a life together and continually renew their interest in each other over a long period of time under conditions where they build and progress through life successfully.
The hesitation with sub-cultures is therefore questioning if this will reduce the likelihood of realizing this wider integration into more aspects of life, I would guess.

There is a lot of LIP SERVICE to the notion of zero discrimination - and yet - fundamentally all people have their thresholds where thus from that starting point, the natural reaction IS to discriminate! In matters of investing potentially DECADES of one's life with another person: Such a choice could be either ruinous or else elevating in terms of the quality of enjoyment one manages to achieve in life - is it not so "Nē"?

I've been saying this to another person in this comment section that just because they say they don't discriminate doesn't necessairily mean that they were honest about it. People have an propesnity for lying on surveys to protect their image after all. Especially in Japan where people care strongly about their image. If I say, a particular "type" is not just not sexually attractive to me, but I feel physically like I'm going to be sick even considering them, it's an honest answer. If I say BS such as: "All people are created equal so it is ok if I go out with this random person who I have absolutely nothing in common with." Personally, my belief is that women have every right to REJECT men and be clear in doing so: I think they have to be very selective under very high time pressure. For men, they must realize: If I do not MEET the NEEDS of the woman, why am I wasting their time? And then choose: Do I want to meet those needs - sincerely?

As a Japanese university student, at first, I tried to hide that I'm an otaku, but I got sick of people who strongly discriminate the anime culture and stopped pretending to be mainstream after a while.

I think she literally meant that there wouldn't be enough space for it, or it would be too ugly (to her) to be attractively placed in the house. I noted that they care about presentation, like the one woman saying she was fine with a manga collection if it was neatly organized. Maybe because of smaller houses and less clutter.
I was surprised how much these women thought of the practicality of living together. A western woman would think 'is this quality attractive or at least acceptable to me as a personal trait' but the Japanese women considered how it would affect their lifestyle or ability to have something to talk about, and they were very honest about whether a trait would be socially embarassing. Some seemed to like a guy with a hobby because it would give them more time to spend doing their own thing, which as an introvert I really identify with. I like a guy who can entertain himself!

Who knows if they really are. Keep in mind that there is a sub-group in Japan called sôshoku otoko, which translates into herbivour men. These men have sworn absence to any kind of physical relationship with women. If japanese women were really that forgiving then you would have to wonder why more and more men in that country become abstinent. Another aspect to take into account is image. Japanese people in general are very careful about keeping face and not leave a bad imagine of themselves. And since japanese are said to be very good at reading the atmosphere it is very likely that they simply answered how they are supposed to under these circumstances to protect their image. Not just japanese but people generally have a tendency to not answer surverys truthfully and rather answer how they think they should to protect their imagine. Which makes it difficult to discern how many of these people acutally mean what they say. Think of it this way. How often have you heard women say that they don't care about your looks or your money and that you just have to be yourself? And how many times did you believe they were honest? Or did you often think they only said this because they didn't want to be perceived as shallow and superficial? It's the same with japanese girls. They aren't that much different from other girls but because of how they are portrayed in public and popular media many people want to believe that they are different. More pure and more innocent. You are free to believe they are of course, and maybe they are. But I would be careful with these kind of assumptions as it makes it easy for japanese women to abuse you. Sorry for the long post
@@pandaman1331 i appreciate you taking the time to write out that post, but to be clear i was exaggerating for comedic effect. I understand honne vs tatemae and can tell that some of these interviewees are just being polite. I’m glad you’re looking out for me, though i currently have no plans to visit japan or date a Japanese woman, i doubt they would have any opportunity to abuse me. To reiterate, i was comedically overstating the niceness of the interviewees as a way of complimenting them. I wasn’t trying to make any sweeping generalizations about women in japan.
I probably watched 3 or 4 dubbed animes when I was younger. If people like them as a tradition or a hobby, that's fine. There are worse things people can get addicted to or turn unhealthy... If it does not interfere with work or social life, then it's fine.

The moral is, do your dating in places that are more likely to have otaku women. That way you won't have to try and explain to someone that you like anime when you bring them over and see your collection of on brand and off brand anime content.

I noticed you are right, weeb girls tend to spend more time on weeb stuff and less time on self care and appearance, so I personally feel a balance would be my preference as well.
There is only one problem with that. They often aren't too interested in dating foreigners and can't speak a word of English. I guess your best shot is to have a circle of friends that are in that scene and find someone from that group. Although I have to warn you, many many otakus go through a phase in their teens and grow out of it. So someone being an otaku is very very likely underage. I am not a hardcore otaku but my other hobbie being music lover occupies a lot of space and time in my life, and I'm quite lucky that my girlfriend also enjoys that.. Even more after watching this video, because if I was dating someone that didn't approve my hobby the same way the senior lady did, I'm not sure if we'd be able to be in harmony.. It sucks to imagine a relationship could fail just because of that, but I guess everyone has their own limits and non crossable lines.

A lot of people are collecting figurines these days, especially those funko pop vinyls. They are all the rage in the states. I just have one figurine of Itachi because he is my favorite.

In the west most anime geeks that I know are very attractive people, most really care about their looks, work out and etc. I am a part of European cosplay community and a lot of people that I know are doctors, advocates, some have businesses, models and etc, and they still manage to do cosplays and enjoy geeky things, not only anime. Seeing a typical Japanese otaku (fat, smelly, glasses, no job, cringy) is super rare! You should have shown them that geeks can be very cool, attractive, with good jobs and etc.
Otaku and weeb are different things. What Yuta showed are weebs. Otaku does not only refer to an anime. It could be something you're very interested in, like a TV otaku. Even the girl in the video(5:39) said she's an otaku. Weebs on the other hand, are a different topic.

Saw a video of a guy from texas who is not familar at all with japan and anime and all that stuff and he was wierd out by all the posters of anime girls everywhere.
Anime does have a ton a Japanese mannerism in it and they are explained so if a person does watch a ton of anime they will have a general idea of why people do the things they do in japan.
The telling indicator the general attitude towards their expectations is that watching TV is often referred to as a "hobby" as if anything that is NOT work is a hobby.

Watching TV is a hobby, though... Some people have an interest in shows/movies and choose to spend their time watching them. For example, I don't really watch shows/movies and don't keep up with them, so it's not my hobby. But I always play video games in my free time, so gaming is my hobby.
Keeping the TV on in the background and not paying attention isn't an interest/hobby. But when you keep up with an anime and you choose to invest your time/attention to it, how is that not a hobby?
@@AnisaA The way I see it, a hobby should be productive, like reading books which increases knowledge and vocabulary, playing an instrument etc. Watching TV or shows is just entertainment, it is not productive but still needed in life, a form of escapism. So watching anime for fun should not be considered a hobby.

Watching educational programs on TV can provide way more knowledge than some books. So... to you, only reading certain books is a hobby, while reading just-for-fun books is not a hobby?

Exactly, yes and no. Personality, character and respect play a huge role in dating them or not. If they are a creep, selfish and rude person to you then no. But if they are kind, caring and they treat you right, yes. Vice versa too of course.

The last 2 ladies' opinions made me realise - why do the ladies want to restrict / why can't the men do what they love while still being in the relationship? It's weird that the ladies can't compromise with the men's hobbies of being a Weeb/otaku/anime/cosplay lover. To me, I love my man for his personality. If he has his hobbies (aside from being a drug dealer/illegal stuff), that's actually a good thing even if it's different from mine. We can share each other's hobby. I never loved running till I met my ex boyfriend. He changed my life for the better and now I run every day and is on track to becoming a better athlete =)

It sounds like they are compromising. Most of them said 'It's fine as long as it's not too much or too public.' There's a big difference between weebs and otaku. Weebs don't just like anime... and they're not Japanese. They are obsessed with Japan and put down their own culture, and usually disrespect Japanese culture in their own ways. This video is not about weebs.

I'm don't think I'm an otaku/weeb but I'm never giving up anime for the dating scene. After an 8 year hiatus and trying to get my life together I find anime very therapeutic. And as far as I'm concern the same way Japanese view otakus I feel the same way about other Americans and their obsession with sports.

It makes sense: if they're into anime themselves they would probably like to have a shared hobby. Most casual anime fans are probably in that area. If someone is a full on weeb with large collections, they're probably spending a LOT of time and money on it and would have to at least find someone like-minded to make it work out. Someone who is not into anime and would thus have to "tolerate" the hobby would probably not get along well with an anime fan, since it's likely to be quite time-consuming and low status (compared to e.g. a musician).

Not a weeb, but these people need to understand that things like anime and video games from Japan made our childhoods fucking magical. As much as they love their culture and take pride in it, for westerners these things are what get people interested in learning about their culture, traditions, language, and food. These "embarrassing hobbies" most of them look down on did more for spreading ideas from Japan than anything else. Sure, some weebs make me cringe a little, but it makes them happy and brings joy to their life. I'm much more worried about that than how you appear to others.
