It's wild how so many popular and significant films and albums from the 90s exist in an almost "vacuum"? I think in many ways this was the last decade when there was Black culture that existed in this way. When there was music/art/film that didn't "crossover" and Black artists that did. It's still funny tho as someone who grew up in the 90s to see something that was very popular like 'Jason's Lyric' be kind of unknown to non Black folks lol.
as a white girl born in the late 2000s, i can confirm. i had absolutely no idea who d’angelo was before clicking on this… maybe it’s bc i’m just kinda getting into hip hop and rnb (my parents are very much rock and roll only ppl, and the ppl at school really only listen to super new stuff). still interested to watch since i love these videos… didn’t expect to sit through a 2 hour video abt prince, an artist i only know from his top 5 most popular songs.
I think it has to do with how music was marketed at the time. Radio was much bigger and with different demographics (rnb, country, MOR, Adult Contemporary, etc.).
Hyperbolics are required for someone like D’Angelo, he’s simply one of if not the greatest musicians of all time imo. He’s truly a singular talent Just like Pikmin.
Also , fun fact, Chicken Grease is kinda of a Prince tribute as well, considering the term chicken grease comes from Prince and how he would call Major 9th chords "adding chicken grease" to a chord and the song is littered with major 9th chords , everyone should check out the 33 1/3 book for Voodoo especially if you're a super fan like me
Questlove was DJing a lot in New York and indie bands would come to him and tell him how important voodoo was to their development. When he told Dlo that hipsters were going crazy over the album years later he genuinely couldn’t believe it. Dangelo is truly a gift from god
This video just made my whole month! We need more D'Angelo content on the internet. He's such an influential force not only in neo-soul and r&b but in music in general. We need more videos like this! Thank you for such a well made video as always.
Hey friend , thanks for covering one of my biggest influences ever. just chiming in for folks who are curious, Jasons Lyric was relatively big in the black community. now that im older im realizing it was ONLY big in the black community, Idk if it got an actual movie release, but it was heavilyyyyy played on BET growing. I bet they still play that movie as much as they did then. As an older cinephile I'll admit the movie wasn't thattttt great from a writing prespective, but I think it opened the door for movies like Moonlight to explore black masculinity. but you're right Black Men United shoulda been way bigger then what it was, but I think it only tells us something about how the entertainment industry valued black men at that time. I wonder how the song and the movie would be received today... really interesting case study ... also kinda wild that his FIRST credit was writing for the biggest names in soul/r&b
"Jason's Lyric" was a moderate success back in the day. It made $20,851,521 against a $7 million budget. It just became forgotten to most people outside of the black community.
It’s really weird hearing someone say they didn’t know BMU or Jason’s Lyric existed….like both are iconic moments from the 90’s. But glad you found them.
I was there, not a full venue, he staged dived and was held up by about 7 of us. I also missed questloves drumstick by the skin of my teeth, declined his vest, which D threw as well. Great concert and maybe kept me here in hamburg at the time. Markthalle.
That D'Angelo episode of _Atlanta_ was just... (chef's kiss!) 😘🤌 D is absolutely one of the best artists alive. 3 albums are enough, when they're THAT good!!! PS. _Jason's Lyric_ has always been a certified hood classic 😉
I love DDDs like this, cause I am NOT familiar with the world of neo soul, so a crash course like this really opens my eyes and gets me familiar with a fascinating new facet of the music world
When it came to listening to D’Angelo I listened to his discography backwards. I started with Black Messiah first, Voodoo second, and Brown Sugar last. I don’t know why I did it like that but I did gain an appreciation for all his albums that way.
6:07 The Bob George reference, made me subscribe immediately. My man is tapped in. Also, D’Angelo alone Eric Clapton to hear the record wasn’t really so random, considering they had been performing together in the years prior.
I discovered his discog earlier this year despite hearing him on other albums without realizing it, mostly on Ms. Lauryn Hill's Miseducation. He's easily jumped up my list as one of my most beloved artists for his just complete variety and layered sounds
As a D'Angelo fan when I first heard Unshaken while playing RDR2 I freaked out, the song plays in a such emotional heavy stage of the game it almost made me cry

@MicTheSnare You forgot D’angelo’s feature vocals on the RH Factor’s cover of “Ill Stay”. The RH Factor was a band centered around trumpeter Roy Hargrove and featured some other fellow soulquarians. I’ll Stay was written by Funkadelic. Thank you Michael! You are an angel; good work!!!!

D’Angelo is a true artist. Voodoo was a great album. Black Messiah is special to me. It came during a tough time in my romantic life so it always touches me. God bless him.
Imo UA-cam music journalism has sorely needed people to take that YT sense of humour and make videos about musicians and their art - you're doing an excellent job of it, subscribed
Great video! And if anyone is interested in discovering more neo soul music, check out Lewis Taylor's first album released in 1996. Two little fun facts: Aaliyah declared herself a fan of his after listening "Bittersweeet", the album's main single. Also, D'Angelo contacted Lewis Taylor to work on a follow up to "Brown Sugar" in NY. Taylor said that he was left astray by him and went back home disappointed.
This was the perfect DDD comedown after the Prince epic, while also serving as a palette cleanser as well. Now holding out hope for that Madonna / Bob Dylan DDD ;) Excellent video Mick
I had a school trip today, when i got back late at night i was expecting my parents to pick me up, but they apparently had an argument so bad they literally forgot about me. I had to walk for over an hour at 8 PM ( i live in one of the most dangerous parts of my city ) to get back home and almost got robbed because neither of them had the intention of picking me up. I was pissed as fuck and got home all sweatty and tired, but then a new DDD gets uploaded and im finally able to relax, thx man.
I grew up listening to the Beatles, Stones, and Prince. Listened to Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, and System of a Down in high school (in Indiana.) Spent 15yrs worth of money on a record collection... Voodoo is my all time favorite album. And as I age past 40 years old, it's distancing itself from the rest. Truly a genius.
3:53 That question make me assume you know most ya audience is white or just young af…..the whole black community born before 90 knows about this movie it’s a classic!!
7:12 Keri Hilson's fans can relate. Funnily enough, they apparently share a lot of the same filler time as well; movies, guest appearances, and spiritual retreats. And btw, this video makes me feel optimistic for her eventual album drop, in about 50 years, so I appreciate that!
Thank you SO much for posting today, genuinely. I've been on vacation the past few days and while it's been great, I was missing home extra hard today. This was the serotonin boost I needed. I don't know a ton about D'Angelo but How Does It Feel is one of my new favorite songs, so this was such a nice surprise. And yes, I downloaded the playlist for my flight home. Thank you!!!
Thanks for this video. Mr Dangelo is my all time fave... and I have watched alot of videos about him in my time... and this is a really great account of his life and works. You got my heartstrings and I really appreciate that.
Great D'Angelo vid! Loved it! I have to see the Prince one next, seeing as I always adored him (no pun intended). To touch on what you mentioned about "Jason's Lyric," as some others previously commented, it's a classic film in the black community. It was released back in 1994, when I was 13 (I know I'm telling my age right now, but I don't care). The movie itself is about two brothers that grow up in the Third Ward of Houston, TX. They both suffer trauma in their lives, but one grows up to rise above the drama and finds love, whereas the other one succumbs to his PTSD and circumstances. I've seen it a million times, and I still revisit it to this day. Check it out whenever you have the chance. I also remember when the song "You Will Know" was released. The song featured Tevin Campbell, Boyz II Men (who were at the height of their careers by this time), Gerald Levert, and Raphael Saadiq, just to name a few, so the track was a very big deal in the black community. It got a ton of radio airplay, and the video was constantly on BET. Not only that, I remember friends of mine taking the melody and making up their own lyrics for events, or just to mess around. However, I never realized that D'Angelo was a part of the Black Men United group (that's what the supergroup called themselves), so I still learned something new about the song! Again, this was a great vid. Outstanding work. ❤
When I first played RDR 2 and got to that part I had no idea who D’Angelo was. I didn’t know who it was until I saw the Dunkey video and him freaking out how D’Angelo was in the game. After that I looked him up and learned more about him and now I am equally as confused and amazed as to how he made a new song just for the game.
I am so glad I found your channel. Our music tastes overlap by like 85-90% (re: your take on Songs About Jane...I just wanna talk...), and your analysis is so thoughtful, knowledgable, and smart while still being accessible. I desperately need a DDD on Spoon! Keep up the amazing work!
Thinking about Grandmother's chicken for the How does it feel video. Lol. I feel the record label was like if you want this album to sell show that skin.
Jason's Lyric is a Black classic, it's always so interesting how separated our popular culture is sans a few exceptions, it's a good movie you should watch it.
Cant wait to wait 20 more years and hear D'Angelo release the actual greatest album of all time, like i dont care how long itll take for him to release it will be an amazing album regardless
I'm amazed we're getting a DDD this soon after the last one, but I'm definitely not complaining. Also, I'm British, we don't have D'Angelo's here, so I was very confused by the opening of this video lmao.

From Prince to D’Angelo
Artistry on point (especially as one of D’Angelo’s influences is Prince)

As a huge huge D'angelo fan. Thank you for simply bringing awareness to such a great and amazing artist. Really, thank you.
Maaan, same here. I came to comment but you said it all 🙌🏿
The greatest R&B/Neo Soul Artist of All Time. 💯👍🏾
As someone who played Red Dead Redemption 2, "Unshaken" was responsible for one of my most unforgettable experiences as a gamer. Insane song.
D’Angelo’s story is really so sad but it was so wonderful to see him come back in a better headspace

This video manages to fill in the neo-soul shaped hole in the 90s episode of Defined The Decade™©®.
Considering that album's impact on popular R&B for nearly a decade, I was genuinely surprised it didn't make it.
Imagine telling anyone with melanin darker than a Dunkin Donuts latte in the late 90s that Brown Sugar would be seen as less influential than Green Day's Dookie. You'd see some hands thrown.

This cat was like Frank Ocean, just gonna keep the people guessing. He did a hell of a Prince impression tho
He's way better than Prince imo
your reaction to jason's lyric and black culture in general is insane. I be forgetting white people be white
lol and the way he pronounced one mo' gin was kind of funny
Lmaoooo😂
Did you want him to put a disclaimer in his videos that he is white?
@@Harmonyguru_lol that’s not necessary
@@Harmonyguru_ i’ve been here many a times. just shocking cus what’s confusing to him is literally like back of hand knowledge to me
Fun Fact: D‘Angelos plays keys on Seals Fly Like An Eagle Record
I also didn’t get the “think of your grandma’s cooking” unless he was the meal👀
