"Trying People" off AOI: Bionix probably the most heart wrenching lyric from Dave talking about his daughter, how the new kids in hip hop aren't giving respect to the music they make and their elders and one line that hits hard now. "So when I'm gone make sure the headstone reads 'He did it for us'. Dave definitely gave it to hip hop. Respect to Plug 1 and Plug 3 still keeping De La alive.
De La Soul brings powerful and bittersweet memories and feelings for me. I was in high school when the Native Tongues movement (Jungle Bros., Del La, Tribe Called Quest, Leader's of the New School) exploded in the late 1980s/early 90s and by 1994/94 this genre was declining to be replaced by Gangsta and shallow Bling (P Diddy era). But to be honest, by '94 (Generation X) I had graduated college, was dealing with work/jobs, life, relationships, families, less time for music. I didn't even know when Stake's Is High came out. I found out maybe 4 months later after seeing a billboard poster for the album in the subway. By the early 2000s I was done with American music and American Hip Hop and listening exclusively to music from Africa/Middle East and other world music. When I finally heard their last album (...Anonymous Nobody) I started crying. It was like seeing an old long lost friend.
I was overjoyed when we could finally listen to the early De La soul records. Stakes is High is my favorite album with “Diminint” my favorite track. As a black man growing up in the 90’s, nothing encapsulated my frustration of the commercialization and materialism of hip hop better than this set of work. And I still play is religiously to this day.
Yeah, De La Soul brings powerful and bittersweet memories and feelings for me. My sister and I had the greatest pleasure of seeing Gorillaz live back in October in Camping World for the first and seeing De La Soul perform Feel Good Inc. Turns out it would be the only time we’d ever see the full line up sense Tru would pass 4 months later.
Dearest Mic T. Snare, you don't know how happy I am for reminding me about that happy feet song, I've been searching for it FOR 12 YEARS THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!
I have been WAITING for this DDD, and faithfully been voting for it in the polls for a while. So happy to see them finally on streaming. De La Soul Forever, and thank you, Dave.
I have never been more hyped to see a video. I literally commented on the Nirvana deep dive that you should do De La Soul because of their full catalog release on streaming. I know this is just a coincidence, but this really made my day. Love the channel, especially the deep discog dives, you are doing great work.
Yeah, De La Soul brings powerful and bittersweet memories and feelings for me. I was in high school when the Native Tongues movement (Jungle Bros., Del La, Tribe Called Quest, Leader's of the New School) exploded in the late 1980s/early 90s and by 1995/96 this genre was declining to be replaced by Gangsta and shallow Bling (P Diddy era). A little correction for “Bitties in the BK Lounge”: the first verse was done by Dave, second verse was Posdnuos arguing with a girl, and Maseo comes with a more laidback rap contribution with some female backups. Also @ 12:53: Beats, Rhymes and Life was released weeks after Stakes is High, not a year before. Stakes is High was July 2, BR&L was released on the 30th.
So glad you made this man, one of my favourite groups of all time. Definitely worth reading more into their legal battles if anyone is interested, the Turtles winning theirs all those years ago led to a chilling affect on musicians working with samples, and helped shape modern copyright law (for the worse obviously)
W Mic!! Love all the shine De La has been getting recently due to their reemergence on streaming/physicals. It's just a shame it took this long (and Trugoy's passing) for all of this to finally happen. RIP and thank you Plug Two! De La For Life
the guys that started what I feel is my own personal hip hop journey due to their influence on independent hip hop, I have viewed this group as monoliths in the genre as a whole. My interest in hip hop has always been independent, backpacker, conscious focused, boom-bap... and De La Soul have always appeared to be the forefathers of the styles that I hold dear. And yet... I never gave a thought to their work past the 90's. Thank you for bringing my attention towards these releases and projects.
Now I need a one-off video defending your stance on why 48 min records are the ideal, versus other lengths! Or just tell us your thoughts behind album lengths in general, I'm curious now
Was just binging your content. Also was hoping de La soul would be next for a DDD! Love it Just finished watching, gotta say my favourite De La Soul albums were The Grind Date and De La Soul is Dead.
The “simply” song made me stop the video and go to Spotify … now I have a song that’s going to be on replay. I didn’t listen to anything after stakes is high so I had no idea about that fire. Time to listen to the rest after this.
Back in 2017, I got to see De La Soul preform in NY as part of a music festival. Prior to that I only had listen to a few of their songs so didn’t really know what I walked into but man was it a great time. Definitely one of my favorites performances. The best moment of the weekend though was when they joined Damon on stage to preform Feel Good Inc since Gorillaz was finishing up that night.
Buhloone Mindstate is my favorite from them. You wouldn't go that far, but I will. My favorite production, my favorite tone and lyricism, my favorite influences, and that refrain you mentioned. "It might blow up, but it won't go pop" feels equal parts inward reflection and outward acceptance that trying to make this left turn into jazz-influenced rap wasn't going to sell records. That's why I love on Patti Dooke, where the discussion of selling out, crossing over, and giving up your soul to make it in the industry, feels like a poignant breakdown for the song, which it then pushes right on past, finishing that song with a bang and then fading into I Be Blowin', where they don't even PRETEND to care about what other people thought of their music.
22:40 Oh hey, it's that song Mic started writing back in 2019's Blur DDD! How'd I miss the news that he wrote a full song, recorded it with a De La Soul guest verse, and even made a cartoon music video for it? Seems like a big deal that I probably should've noticed by now.
Fallin’ with Teenage Fanclub is a fave De La song not mentioned. Judgement Night soundtrack. They clearly didn’t get the memo that the album was a precursor to Nu Metal. Tom Petty samples, jangly guitars and the most 90s video ever…
DDD is always a fantastic experience to watch. I love the subtle humour (every time you blatantly foreshadow something, it gets me in stitches) intermingled with the quick, narrative facts of each Dive. And, my goodness, the way you manage to keep everything in focus and stay your points is awe-inspiring. Even your "derailments" add to the focus and never detract from it. I have been wondering, however, if there is a way to bring this sort of energy to nonradio music? Specifically, movie compositions and game OSTs? I've been on (another) huge David Wise (Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2) and Michael Abels (Nope, Get Out, Us) kick lately and I am desperate for some sort of DDD on these two, or any other composer. Hirasawa Susumu (Beserk, Paprika, Paranoia Agent) is another composer I'm fiending for a deep delve into.
i would love to see a DDD on Cage the Elephant, or even an updated one of My Chemical Romance that includes more of that behind the scenes stuff that the newer ones have
I was at Coachella this weekend (I liked Frank's set please stop) and Feel Good Inc. during Gorillaz set was THE highlight for me. Pos' intro felt so warm and genuine, the energy was unmatched and it was just fun. I was born in 2003 so didn't really understand the importance of Feel Good growing up, but that song and De La have become engrained in my regular listening rotation (thanks in part to Pirate Bay). Thanks Mic, this video was great and a real nostalgia trip to my beginning interests in music as I really first started with 90s hip-hop and neo-soul. Keep up the great work. Waiting for the Springsteen dive :)
Good video. De La is my favorite hip-hop group ever. 3 Feet High is a legendary album no doubt, but my personal favorite and the one I grew up listening to over and over and over again is De La Soul Is Dead. I regrettably didn't listen to Buhloone Mindstate until later on, but I was obsessed with that album for a period as well. Bring on AOI Part 3 and Rest In Power, Trugoy. 🕊💮
I love that you used the teen titans episode..I’m so glad they are on streaming..I’m teaching my nephews who are 3 and 4 ..they are loving the de the la and the soul

The day De La dropped on streaming was a beautiful day - just wish Dave The Dove was still here to see it! 🙏 RIP Trugoy Edit: 🤣 A couple quick things: It's Pharoahe _Monch_ - with a _ch_ sound, like "munch" and _Treach,_ like "stretch"... don't want you to get laughed at by HipHop heads lol

Dope deep dive! You omitted a couple of my favorite De La Soul one-offs: Get Away Feat. The Spirit of Wu-Tang and also Turning Me Off Feat. De La Soul off of the Slum Village B Sides compilation. Check them both out, you won’t be disappointed! 😎
Noticeably missing from this are the 2002 song Show Me by Mint Royale Feat. Pos, and 2013s Get Away single, Feat. The Spirit of the Wu. Two of best "modern era" De La tracks.
hey micheal! ive been watching your videos for a couple days straight and i have to say youre one of my favourite creator on this platform! it would be a miracle for me if you could make an episode of ddd about tally hall [+ their solo projects] cuz they have such a rich history despite having its limited discography! :)
I freaking love these Deep Discog Dives. I'm spending way more time than I actually have watching each and every one of them. I would love to see one on Incubus, Childish Gambino, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and/or Led Zeppelin. Cheers!
Funny enough, I was listening to feel good Inc. when this video dropped. Can’t wait to start getting into the discography. Also hoping to get a DDD of Childish Gambino
Damn, this was our one chance to hear Mic The Snare mention Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip. I do think the De La Edit of Thou Shalt Always Kill isn't as good as the original but it's still a cool thing
Fantastic video as always! I was wondering if you could cover the discography of Everything But The Girl at some point? They’re a fascinating band which really varied their sound with each release!

Please can you do Arca? She’s done a lot of collaborations with Bjork on her Vulnicura and Utopia album
Link doesn't work 😔
So happy to see Neil Cicierega on there!
I noticed he wasn't on the list, but Aesop rock could make for a cool DDD!

Holy shit, just googled and saw he has 62 albums.

For me, it was the track "Stakes Is High"!

I do think the De La Edit of Thou Shalt Always Kill isn't as good as the original but it's still a cool thing
I love this man!
Fantastic video as always! I was wondering if you could cover the discography of Everything But The Girl at some point? They’re a fascinating band which really varied their sound with each release!
