This was a great video, thanks !
One thing different in my Dell Inspiron 3158 was the connector on the left hand side for the power, that was a white connector on the mother board instead of a wire that I had to transfer (so it was simpler). This could be helpful for anyone wondering about that part of the video.
Another top could be to get a magnifying glass, as some of those parts and connectors are bloody small. I used my phone and zoom function as a stand-in magnifying glass
    Thanks again !

Thanks! I watched your video, before and during the keyboard/palmrest replacement. I have never made any kind of computer repair ever. This was quite self explanatory. The "brackets" were the hardest to remember where they went. It took me about 1.5 hours because I am a rank beginner, but in the end, between you and the Dell users manual online, I got it working immediately! I saved 100$ by doing it myself.

Thanks Clint... for being patient and showing us the way to replace the keyboard. I have got it replaced twice at Dell centre and each time it has gone bad. Hope with this tutorial, this time I can DIY. thanks a lot.

Your video gave me the knowledge and confidence to replace the defective keyboard and palmrest on my laptop with a new one in about an hour. Thank you very much!

This was a very complete video. I followed step by step and had no problems at all. The only difference I found was the power adapter on my machine was plugged in on the opposite side. Much shorter and easier. My MB had sockets for the power adapter on both sides. Great job. Thanks!

Thank you so much for posting this video. I just did this following your instructions step by step and it worked as described. Thanks again it saved me buying my wife a new computer! Got my keyboard from Amazon $40 bucks.

Thanks so much for the lengthy video. Couldn't have done it without you. One constructive comment: perhaps next time you might try positioning the camera on the other side of the laptop, across from you, so that your hands don't block the video shots. I often could not see what you were doing because your hands blocked the shot. Still, very helpful!

I don't know if anybody could use this information, but the easiest way is to buy the keyboard with the palm rest together. However, if you got a sepparate keyboard and/or palm rest spare there is a little hack, although it works best if you are replacing the palm rest, not the keyboard.
I was replacing the palm rest with a new one, because the old one had a big crack. It involves breaking the plastic points that hold the keyboard and its metal backplate to the palm rest. Then to attach the keyboard to the new palm rest I slightly melted the top of the plastic pins that hold the keyboard and backplate using a soldering gun after putting the keyboard and backplate in place.
If you are replacing the keyboard on the same old palmrest however, the top of those pins would already be dead, however if I were that situation I would try using some silicon in place of the melted plastic.

I replaced the keyboard alone for $12 plus a hour or two of labor. Was really easy

It seemed to me a bit too involved. My purposes for repair were resale, and any flaw in the replacement ends up increasing the risk of return substantially.

@@cliddiard30 I would really like to see the actual keyboard being removed.. I got to the part where the black plastic behind it was exposed but it was still all stuck and I didnt have the balls to force anything so I reassembled with the non-funcional keyboard again :(

Thank you for the video. It is clear now that is useless for me to try disassemble the whole computer to fix some keys that are not working any more. On older computer, you could do that. But it seems that nowdays electronics are made so that you can't fix them anymore, so that you rather throw them and get a new one.
At least the computer works. so I will be using it with an USB keyboard or whatever bluetooth one. In case of emergency I can use the touchscreen.
I was wondering if the keyboard still can be somehow repaired, be it with that plastic broken or not

The spare keyboard I bought is standing alone, just the keyboard, not installed on a new top cover as it is on your video. How to remove the failed one and install the new on the original top cover???

one thing can improve is final step. It is better push down to fit the back before screw in all back screws.

I have the type like yours, and same problem with keyboard. I plan to buy and replace just the keyboard, but considering to difficulties and need to iron and plastic soldering, i think i choose to use external keyboard.
Recently, the laptop wont turn on. Switched on, appears the logo then blank. I swear i hate this laptop, i'll replace with the other brand.

I thought I am the only one who encounter such problem. The first trouble was with keyboard, and it was followed by blank screen, noisy fan etc. I have upgraded the ram and unplugged the battery. I previously assumed that start up-down issue had anyting to do with ram or battery. Turns out not.

I am currently contemplating to replace the keyboard of an inspiron 13 5378. But after reading some materials and watching this video, I become more and more discouraged. The problem is not only the keyboard but recently I found that it develops a number of new habits for turning on-off suddenly, creating noisy fan and blank screen. It took multiple trials until the machine could run properly but for only short time before shutting down again. It is my first experience with dell laptop yet it is very dissapointing. I never had such problem with other brands.

This is ridiculous that dell tries to solve this problem by sitting quiet throygh it. Guess what. It's 2020 and malicious hardware problem with your equipment is still an issue. Mine stopped working after warranty expired. "1qaz" if you all know what i mean... never support dell
The sad part is they charged $130 from people for fixing the issue, that is not happening because of the clients. Mine looks like new, never fell down and I, as an IT person, always take care of my equipment. This is a joke! Congrats DELL for being number 1 company at sucking :)

Do you think you could possibly do a similar video to this for the Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series model #3168?

I think I saw you pull out every component but the keyboard soo why name this video keyboard replacement ??????

    • @cliddiard30
      @cliddiard30  4 роки тому +2

The keyboard is built in to the housing. You have to detach everything from the top half of the base and attack it to the replacement. There may be ways to use a soldering iron or plastic welding iron to detach the old one and install a replacement, but that’s far more work than any savings you might find would be worth.

It's just the ENTER key which is broken. As an alternative, why not just use a different key for this? There are methods to substitute. Dell makes such crappy keyboards.
