Installing hard drive and memory on Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series (3168). Also fixed keyboard

- I opened this Inspiron 11 3000 series to fix the keyboard that was not working. Only half of the keyboard would work. I also replaced the hard drive and memory on this little guy. The upgrade to 8GB did work on this laptop.
Model 3168
SSD I installed was:
amzn.to/44r3U9Q
Memory:
amzn.to/3JPJRdk
USB Hard Drive SATA Transfer Cable
amzn.to/3JMHh7Q
Thanks Fernando, every procedure is very easy. I thought that it was more hard. You shown us that is more hard to take out the memory stick from a plastic container than to open up the computer and replace the hard drive to a SSD.
Wow. Complete success here! Laptop has been a real pig for a long time. I was advised to put in an SSD and although, as you say, the dealer said the laptop could not accommodate more memory, I saw another video that said the same thing you did. Not only that, and you will laugh, I rolled my car one day, and although I walked away from it, my coffee was a bullseye on the Inspiron, after which the Control key no longer worked. Ugh. So I needed an SSD, more memory, and a keyboard fix. I found an article from I think PC World that explained how to clone a hard drive, which saved me having to build this whole thing over again, I cloned the HD, took the old mechanical spinning one out and put the SSD in, swapped out the factory 4GB for an aftermarket 8GB (cheapest one on Amazon - TIMETEC $30) and while I was in there, based on your comments in this video, I re-seated the keyboard ribbon cable. The procedures all went 100% as planned, and now, probably 20 minutes after first cracking the case, computer boots up with new memory (Windows 10 "ABOUT" shows Installed RAM = 8.00 GB) disk clone works perfectly, and, can you believe it, the Control Key works again! The difference in speed is very noticeable. It is MUCH faster. I bow to you and kiss your feet. Thank you very much for this video.
Link me to everything you bought and how to clone it im on a mission
Small comment. This is a perfect video. When I opened my unit I found a slight variation on the hard drive installation. The drive was covered with a metallized sleeve held to the drive by four screws in the usual each mounting holes. The cover obscured the drive mounting screws. So the inboard one has to be removed and then a smAll tape seal removed from the drive to uncover the outboard screw. Once out, I removed four screws that held what is either a heat or static shields down replaced it on the new drive. I reinstalled it without problems. Clipped in the new memory and all good. Thanks for the help.
It helped me a lot! Thank you Fernando!
Thank you got the laptop upgraded nite and day so far
Thanks for the video, I have a similar laptop, it came with 32gb storage and 2gb ram. There's no ram slot like in the video and there's no hard disk. Any help or suggestions to increase the ram because it is really running slow
It's probably a newer version that has all the memory built in and nvme ssd hard drive. Google "nvme short ssd" and then look for one on the motherboard.
Thanks, you helped me fix my keyboard :)
Thanks for the video Fernando! Do you happen to have the model number for the hard drive adapter you used prior to swapping the drives?
I have this one: a.co/d/iwIYvhR
what size is the screwdriver to take out the hdd? Please reply because i am trying to save the storage stuffs from the hdd to a new computer for my dad. Thanks!
small phillips but something like this would work: amzn.to/47EWHpA
Hello ! Which program did you used for cloning the disk? Thank you for your advise and great video
Some of the ssds include software, for example Samsung and Crucial have software on their website. If yours does not come with software then you can use Easeus from www.easeus.com/backup-utility/free-disk-cloning-software.html
Hi. I would like to know the specs on the 8gb memory that you installed. Or at least give me a link of what memory you used or can be used on this laptop to upgrade it to 8gb
Excellent excellent educational cast. Very representative of a how to video. Thank you 🙏
Hey Fernando, would you please send us the link where you bought the hard drive and the ram upgrades from?
Thanks Fernando, I see your links now I will go ahead and order them
My HDD on my inspiron 3000 was so slow that it took maybe 6 hours to update Windows. It basically wasted my entire break at work.
So I got an SSD and an 8GB ram stick. It wont run as well as the laptop that I originally bought, but it will hold me over until its fixed
Hardest part of the install was getting the memory out of the plastic container...
lol
Lol
Hi! I installed the RAM stick you used on my Inspiron 11 3168. I didn’t update the hard drive because I plan to be using it for mostly web-based applications. However, after the install my laptop made loud beeping noises when I tried to turn it on. Did I install it incorrectly, or do I need to update the hard drive, or is it actually just not going to recognize the higher RAM?
It might be you're using the wrong kind of memory
Great video and clear thank you gonna upgrade my son's 2in1

No, I don't think you can upgrade the CPU on this device.

Yes, the upgrade was a significant increase in speed but this device is a basic laptop, not a gaming laptop or anything.

For me DDR3 worked fine, look at the specs or just try to match what you're taking out of the computer.
Hi there, thanks for your video. Just wondering if you can notice much improvement from 4GB to 8GB ram ? I bought a second one and I’m surprise that despite its age, the battery still last few hours. But the down side is even though it has a SSD in to already, it’s not as snappy as I wish it to be. So, I’m thinking about upgrading the Ram, but u want to know it upgrade it to 8GB would make any differences at all. The one I got has Pentium N3710 4Cores CPU. Thanks!
It should make it quicker but I did upload this video a few years ago. I would buy it from somewhere where it is returnable it does not help.
@@FernandoC thanks for your reply.
Does the hard drive comes with the transfer cable? thanks for video fernando
Nope, you need to buy the cable separately.
@@FernandoC where can you get the transfer cable if you dont mind me asking? Do you need the cable tho? the website for the HDD that you have listed, when you look at the product it says that they have the clone software etc.. but, i'm just wondering how you get it on the new HD without the cable?

I have 3148 and just swap hdd to Crucial BX500, I was like holy s*** I don't know this little guy can be this snappy. 😁 I wanted to upgrade the RAM, but there's a mixed answer over the internet whether this model support 8gb RAM or not. Crucial compatibility check said it support but I'm pretty cautious. Do you think should I upgrade or not.
I would probably buy it from somewhere where you can return it if it does not work. If the chip is not every expensive, I would try it. Good Luck.
I upgraded it to 8 gb of ram... its better
Does this laptop not have a cooling fan? Is there any upgrades that would help with that
This computer and even model 3168 has different models, processors and motherboards - on without any HD or RAM upgrade slots. first thing to do is identify which you have. Is there a way without opening it up first, say based on the stickers on the bottom? ie, made in? china, brazil, etc and the serial numbers? edit: I think all of the models with 32GB eMMC storage are not upgradable at all - neither the storage nor the memory. No slots. So that's the way to verify without opening it up. (I think)
I have this exact laptop, in red too
is it possible to upgrade the Wi-Fi from a 2.4 GHz to a 5 GHz? I'm a college student and the wi-fi at campus is only on 5 GHz so I'd like to save my laptop from its doomed fate with an upgrade to Wi-Fi. I'm watching this video and don't see a spot for a wi-fi card

I actually opened it up and I see the Wi-Fi card. So I have a new question, Do you have any Wi-Fi card Recommendations to upgrade the laptop to 5GHz
Hello, sorry for the delay. I don't have a recommendation but you can review the ones on Amazon and see which gave solid reviews.
Can u do a speed test?
i have this same model, i bought it 3 months ago and its super slow with everything, even with basic programs like word.My computer have a amd 9 9420e processor, hdd 64gb and 4gb ram. did you thing if i upgrade with a ssd 250gb and 8 gb ram i can save my computer?

That’s for sure , the ssd it’s more fast than the factory one . Let me know in advance .
It’s the model 3195?
What software did you use for the copy? AOMEI Backupper?
Crucial has their own for their drives so I went here: www.crucial.com/support/ssd/ssd-install/ssd-install-steps/part-2-copy
I saw u replaced ram with a ddr3 but it came with a ddr4. Does it matter? Mine has a ddr4 4gb.
Will upgrading memory help with the computer freezing up causing you to have to reset the computer because of the freeze up? I have this same computer
I believe it should, I had two blue versions of this that had bad ram amount and only 30 gbs of hard drive space. By replacing the these properly should fix your problem. If not then you may have other applications running that will slow it down.
@@Xethenion What is the largest size Hard Drive can you put in? Links please. Thanks!
Nice teaching sir 👍
I know nothing about working on computers etc. can I just install the memory without an upgraded hard drive?
If so, do I still have to transfer everything over to an external hard drive first if only doing memory?
No, you can just swap the memory chip without doing anything else.
Awesome thank you for responding. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I didn’t have your video because my son told me there was nothing I could do to make this laptop better and I was seriously upset about it but because of your video you saved it. super grateful!
Hi #Fernando. I'm so glad to see this very helpful and informative video of yours. It makes me think of doing the same thing with my Dell inspiron 11 3000 series which has 500GB HDD and 4GB RAM, however I wish to install a 512GB SSD and 8GB RAM. Do you think it will work?
Good Day, have you tried to do it? If yes does it works good?
is this the same procedure for the dell Inspiron 11 3180 model?
Hello, I hope you’ll see this. I have a few questions?
I really want to upgrade the HDD to SSD for faster processing and bigger storage space as well as the memory RAM to 8GB. But i would like to know if 240GB SSD and 8GB RAM is the maximum upgrade i can do for this laptop? Would it be possible to upgrade till 1TB SSD?
8GB RAM seems to be like the ‘good enough’ upgrade when i search for recommendations for laptop specs but I use storage like crazy. I’m not sure if 240GB SSD would be adequate.
I have the exact laptop with only the plastic case colour difference. (Mine’s the blue-ish purple case.) i got this as part of my ‘free’ stuff from college. I never had a problem and stills works perfectly as it is since I never used this laptop outside office work and casual web browsing. I found typing on this laptop comfortable for me to change and the size to be just right. I just want to upgrade this so it can handle more work when I’m on the go than bringing my main, heavier and bulkier laptop...
Hello moinstar, the memory caps out at 8 gigabytes so you cannot go higher. The hard drive can go as high as you can afford. You should be able to go up to 1 terabyte with no problems.
Fernando C I see! I’ll plan ahead onto when I’ll upgrade it! Helps so much!! Thank you so much!
So, did it all work.? Meaning of the memory upgrade and ssd did it all take an operate flawlessly.? Thanks
Yes, significant speed improvement with the SSD drive and the memory did get recognized as 8GB. Just make sure you have the latest firmware update for the BIOS to make sure.

Hello, if you buy an SSD that comes with software, it makes it easier to move the data to the new hard drive. Yes if you clone , you can use the same version of Windows. Crucial and Samsung have free software to copy/clone the data.
Nice video .. i gonna try update to ssd 😃
How to did you clone your data to your new ssd? Thanks in advance.
There should be videos that show you how to do this but maybe I should create one too!
Ok, I have a question. Practically got the same laptop. Only mine is 32GB. I opened mine up and that entire silver area where the SSD would be isn’t there. Would I be able to buy what I need to add it there? Am I missing something?
Did you figure it out? Maybe you have a smaller m.3 drive instead of an SSD?
@Earth 616 Survivor: your laptop most likely had this type of hard drive: www.amazon.com/dp/B07J2WBKXF/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_zr3NEbZFWA664

The computer only has one slot so you can take it out of one in the other but there's only one slot for memory.
Do you have to disconnect the battery before replacing hd ?
It should not matter if the laptop is off. If you feel more comfortable, you can unplug it before you do it.

Any 2.5 inch hard drive would work. Either a spinning SATA or an SSD that is 2.5 inch.
Do you think the newer version with Emmc drive can also be upgraded to SSD?
Usually the space in the laptop is not big enough to put an SSD. I have an HP Elite laptop that came with an Emmc and had to upgrade it with another Emmc drive. Also, some laptops have the Emmc soldered on so it depends on the laptop.
What proccesor is? Celeron, pentium?
Not mine. Took it apart and it has NO upgradable slots. Wish I could attach a photo. I guess it will never get updated now. I got the dreaded no available space for the installation. What are they thinking!? Why does it require more space than what you have on an operating system. So now I will use the snail until it craps out completely... thanks Dell, I’m NEVER buying another product from you.
why my friend's dell laptop don't have interface for hdd? i supposed to upgrade it, since it only 32 GB ssd space on its drive? can i upgrade it?pls help me, tnx alot
It depends if the 32gb ssd is removable or built into the motherboard. You have to open it up and see what it looks like inside. If you can remove it, you can probably replace it with a nvme drive.
Can i do this to a brand new one that I haven't started up yet? I wouldn't need to copy or clone any data would i?
Correct that you don't need to clone the data as long as you have a copy of Windows to install on the new hard drive.
@@FernandoC can I copy the windows from the old hard drive or I can find it online somewhere?
@@lifeonmars03 If you google "windows 10 download", the link to microsoft.com lets you download windows 10 to a flash drive. You should then be able to install windows from the flash/USB drive. You might also want to open your computer before buying the drive to make sure you get the right one. My video is over a year old so it could look different inside.
Is Kingston compatible with this computer?
The company does not matter, you just have to pick the right one for your computer.
I opened it up and there's no hard drive and no RAM socket, just an empty space?
It's a newer laptop they probably has a nvme chip for a hard drive and built-in memory.
