The ending is the message. The concept of the song is the tired old joke - why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side. We all know it, it’s lame, it’s not funny. But Bo took that and turned it on it’s head. He gave it an entirely different perspective. You can go one way, or the other way. Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side. That could be… a more fulfilling life. But “the other side” could be one of two things. A more fulfilling life, or Heaven. He didn’t give a definitive ending. It’s up to your own interpretation if you want to believe she got to the other side; of the road, or the other side; Heaven because she died getting hit by a car.

@@ThatSingerReactions Also sprinkled into this is commentary on the generational shift where people are coming to value personal freedom over personal responsibility. The chicken is a wife and mother, but we (society) don't seem to bat an eye at the thought of her abandoning her own family in the pursuit of personal goals. More and more, people want to live their lives without being tied to the repercussions of past decisions. It's a tough existential question - where does one's right to happiness fall with respect to the right's of others and your own integrity? Surely, one shouldn't be punished for the rest of their life for a bad decision, but the cost of your freedom is often damage to others (that they, in turn, don't deserve).

@@philliplocey1097 as a new father and husband of a stay at home wife this song really hit home. I want to encourage my wife to find something outside motherhood both for her but also for me and my son because I this she is already suffering in silence because she feels bad wanting something outside family life. I have something outside family life and I know it keeps me sane and grounded. I hope I can convince her that 1 she doesn't need to feel bad leaving our child with his grandparents or at a cresh if anything it would be good and 2 that it maybe scary getting back out there after a couple of years inside and another couple somewhat forced baby solitude but it's something she want and needs to do for herself, and she deserves it.

This is such a beautiful song, even without the lyrics. Add in the lyrics and it is just spectacular. I would like to look at the hopeful ending as what happened rather than the chicken getting squashed along with her dreams. 5:16 makes me get really emotional with what he does with the melody. Thank you for your reaction to this one!
he was saying most people think the chicken died attempting to cross the road to get to a better life but he is saying its better to think the chicken got to the other side. and then said "thats why she did it" referring to the classic why did the chicken cross the road joke, in this case saying the chicken crossed the road for freedom and a better life. so its better to believe she got to the other side.

We don't find out what happened. That's not what the song was about. It's about "Why". Why did the chicken cross the road?

But bo prefers to look at it as she made the decision to pursue a real life and that in and of itself is the other side. Regardless the chicken ceased to be medically alive if that was the confusion 🤣
