  • From a humble cutting to seeing fruit primordia in just 4 months! At around the 6-month mark I harvested a small bag of figs and only one was worth eating, but I expected the first figs to be of poor quality. In another 4-6 months I expect to see a bountiful second harvest.

    Last autumn I took a fig cutting and had it in a glass of water on the kitchen windowsill over winter. It rooted so I potted it up and placed it under an LED shop light because the weather was still cold here in NJ. Even though it was only a foot tall with a couple branches, it made 7 figs which I ate about 6 weeks ago. They were pretty good. I decided to try to keep growing this fig tree indoors year round. My other 5 fig trees live outside in pots and go into my garage over winter when they are dormant. You have to let your figs get totally brown with no green at all and very soft. If you are worried about worms, spray the fruit with BT when they are still green. How about taking some cuttings off your fig tree and try to get them rooted.... or do some air layering of branches.

    It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. I have started documenting my plants' growth as well and I am excited for the years to come.
    As for the fig fruit, my experience with eating them has always been that they are ripe when the look over ripe. Theyre very soft and you expect them to be going bad already, but turns out that that is when they are truly ready to eat.
    Also, is your new plant growing series carrots? those kinda look like carrot tops in there.
    Maybe you could retry with a pomegranate series, or maybe do a new guava series from seed.

    Nice video! I used to pick my figs too early too but now I wait until they are very squishy and don't have white sap when I pick them and they taste 100x better! Looking forward to more.

    Great to see your fig survived the winter flawlessly! Ficus plants are so interesting, you can find them in all different forms of species all over the globe. From bushy and deciduous, to vining and evergreen up to gigantic rainforest trees!
    Also, if you want to give another shot at growing pomegrante shrubs, your current conditions seem to be optimal. They only thrive in full sun and will be more upright in it. Pomegranates lose all their leaves when going into winter dormancy, just like your fig. My pomegranate seedling just woke up from dormancy and has really amazing leaf colours now!
    Edit: 30:45 Looks kind of like dill or carrots

    hey melvin I suggest you to make a tomato growing video its very easy to grow but rember to fertilze the plant when it developes 3 set of true leavs and within 70 days you will be eating delicious tomatoes! Dont forget to use a 8 litre pot.

    Have you ever considered putting copper tape around your pots to prevent the snails/slugs from climbing the pot?

    I don't pick figs until they are hanging straight down and pick off easily. By then my variety are dark brown and soft. If they are still sticking out sideways, they have to go longer. Also when they are ripe, there is very little of that white sap if any at all.

    When you're talking about this plant being a cutting, do you mean it's a grafted tree?

    • @TheMelvinWei
      @TheMelvinWei  Рік тому

      It's a cutting I bought from a nursery. There are no indications of it being grafted.

      They usually don't graft figs. Figs are propagated from cuttings.

    New series will always attach new subscribers:) and higher output (because of many series) will „entertain“ ur subscribers aswell. Max they just do not see ur videos in their feet.
    But whatever. I rly love ur Vidoes and have no problem if u would like to promote something in ur Videos tbh.

    You pretty much have to wait till its almost bad to be good. They have to be squishy and not hardness at all. Otherwise its just gross

    • @TheMelvinWei
      @TheMelvinWei  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes, I learned that they have to be seemingly rotten to be ripe on the inside.
