Samsung Odyssey Ark - Insane 55" 4K mini-LED Monitor

- Samsung today announced the launch of the Odyssey Ark, which the company says is the world's first 55-inch 4K curved display with a 165Hz refresh rate for improved gaming performance. Samsung first previewed the monitor at CES, but it is now available to order.
Priced at $3,500, the Samsung Odyssey Ark features mini-LED technology and a 1000R curvature that is rotatable, which Samsung says offers a "new level of immersion." A Cockpit Mode option allows users to rotate the Ark display to a vertical orientation for multitasking or new gaming experiences.

I use 3 for work and having this I could definitely see taking it down to two monitors. Being able to put multiple displays onto a single screen is definitely something I have been waiting for.
it’s single hdmi input only. u can only switch between the inputs. u can’t have multiple showing on one screen.
He doesn't care about that, 1 input that can emulate the screen realestate of 2-3 monitors, is the goal here.
The people that want to play their xbox at the same time as playing their PC and Mac, have too many hands. I can see the use case, but KVMs can go a long way for multiple systems to use a single monitor.
@@ubxtch Then why does the demo video show 3 sections vertical, all appearing to be live. ??
That's a whole NSA setup lmao.
Can't wait for future versions of this monitor. Maybe something with 8K and USB-C
Is it possible to lower the height so that it touches the floor on a vertical pivot?
hi, you say you can put in different gaming monitor set up in one screen but I can not get it done for mine. I used to have 2 monitors, on one i used all browsers and document related work and the other my game. I can only use one screen now and the others I have to put in the tv browser and for example the tv you tube or twitch but now all that is work related, i need to go to my game screen section and leave the game and make notes or documents seperatly. sorry for the language barrier but do I make sense? I can not set up an extension of my pc on a second part of the screen
This monitor is so huge that it is starting to make the idea of virtual reality goggles make sense.
That's exactly why I cannot wait for the VR technology to go mainstream for productivity.
While in cockpit mode having it do 3 windows what is the ratio of each? I know landscape it has 21:9 and the next one up but does it work in cockpit that way to?
Single HDMI input is the deal breaker for me. I planned to buy this thing and this completely killed it. You can get the same result of this monitor just using fancy zones on a standard monitor or even an LG OLED (which is what I am currently using) for a fraction of the price. Only showing a single HDMI I out at a time is an idiotic choice for a device that costs $3,500.
Yoiu can reserve for pre-order, but it doesn't appear that pre-orders are opend yet.
So could I run stream labs and a game on the same display? or no? and does the port hub support display port?
I currently have (2) 49" Samsung CRG9 monitors stacked on top of each other, and (2) 27" Samsung curved on either side (4 total 27" monitors) of it for a total of 6 monitors... running off one PC. 2 on motherboard and 4 on GPU.... would I be able to replace the (2) 49" in the middle of the stack with this one and still have everything run ok or am I missing something as it relates to the single HDMI input? My brain isn't functioning atm so please help a brother out.
Not being able to have my work and personal computer hooked up and on screen at the same time is a complete deal killer for me.
How low can the monitor get to the desk when in landscape mode? It looks like it's 8+" off the desk -- which is going to put hte top half of the monitor neck-achingly high... Can it go lower?
I can't find one review that talks about using this for video editing or multimedia. This one came close. I'm using an LG 49" widescreen but it's within the return window. I saw this and am curious esp. with holiday sales but can't find a review beyond gaming.
This looks crazy, in both orientations
Can you talk about using it for productivity
I'd like to see 3 of these monitors side by side in portrait mode to get nine 27" inch screens.
Would have two huge gaps though due to the curve
@@Luggruff No it would , hes saying side by side
What’s that pc case called
Only one external input at once is a total dealbreaker. Hope Samsung addresses this asap
Absolute buffoonery. Samsung can and should have done better
I think that'll just be an easy software update.
@@reemobrooklyn3557 I don't think so, being that they are reusing the Samsung tv onewire box hardware to drive this
Total agreement on dealbreaker. It’s like 1x monitor for a computer, and 3x monitors for accessory streaming computer included with TV. Seriously? What’s the point of 3-up and 4-up display if you are hamstrung to the TV computer. Bizarro.
MacRumors! What desk is that! That's a long desk! Can you provide a name or link?
I just got mine and think I need to send it back. I'm running a one year old mackbook pro (loaded) for PRODUCTIVITY/ NOT GAMING. I scaled down the resolution so that the fonts aren't massive, and it makes the resolution so poor that its distracting and photos look bad. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong before I return it?
How does text look from 2.5 feet away?
There's no mention on the specs page about color gamut... so is it safe to assume that it's really small?
Good Q.
I don't think I understand. If you can only use one input at a time, how are the multiple sources being demoed at the same time? 3 screens vertical and four horizontal were shown.
im here at samsung now in nyc and this thing is a beast and I can say this is a buy!!!
I work with 3 monitors and I do music not that I need 3 but it's what I prefer....this Ark system is whats up... not gimmicky to me just a good system. 👌 Thanks for the review 🔥 🔥 🔥
Can i run my macbook and ps5 on this?
Hi Dan, is there a VESA mount option or is the stand an integral part of the Ark?
I believe you can vesa mount!
Caveat: weight is around 90 pounds (i.e., not your typical monitor!) so it may be too heavy for virtually all monitor arms (if that’s what you’re planning).
Can you set up or partition as a 2 or 4 monitor screen using a PC?
Yeah. Saw that in another review.
This monitor looks amazing in every way except for one huge flaw. I almost bought it. I saw it had 4 HDMI inputs, so I assumed you could have 4 input sources on the screen and position them how you like. But it sounds like you can only have one active HDMI input at a time, and the others all have to be generated by the monitor or streamed? This means it's can't even replace a 2 monitor PC setup (left/right) with a split screen correct? Since only one input feed can be active at a time?
this is exact reason why I won't buy one, currently have crg9 and it has picture by picture mode (my vid of it here : ua-cam.com/video/xAyVk0ugldc/v-deo.html ) where I can have laptop and pc displayed at same time, this monitor doesn't have it apparently, this is show stopper for me, pity they didn't add it
@@SikOOs Yes, nice setup! That's exactly what I need it to do. I could live with it if I could only use two inputs at a time, but one is a deal breaker since it is less capable than cheaper monitors. For $3500 I should be able to use all 4 with PIP and position how I want. If they add that, would be a perfect monitor.
this is insane🔥
yes and I bought one a I am insane in a membrane
Samsung still coming with the innovation.
How does it achieve 4k 165hz? Looks like it only has hdmi 2.1 inputs, which max out at 4k 120hz. Maybe I'm missing something.
It has display port 1.4 i believe
@@djsororaando No
Display Stream Compression
Awesome monitor, I would buy it if could afford it :( I would like to see though all HDMI ports be displayed on the screen i.e. laptop, Xbox, PC/Mac etc...
I actually like it
will this be wall mountable, and do i need to trade my 3070TI for an AMD graphics card?
The only GPU able to run this a 4k 165hz is a rtx3090ti maybe a rx6950xt but that's about it.
I have ordered one its coming on 10/09/22 and I will play Squad on it
Can this monitor be used as a single screen portrait display as like the Pro Display XDR?
if so it will be AMAZING for programmers!
Now try to use they webcam un vertical mode.
Three words: Personal gaming theater
I hope you get one soon for review
Could you check if it's possible to ditch the base and VESA mount it?
I can definitely see traders using one or more of these in vertical mode! 👀
Dope 🔥
I love this and have been waiting for it. Was expecting around $2,500, though. Add $1,000 and I am not so sure anymore
It's on sale now in the $2K range.
Built in speakers?
Yup apparently they are pretty decent. Check out Linus Tech Tips & MKBHD impression videos that also went up today
I find it odd the monitor doesn’t have other types of inputs such as USB-C or DisplayPort. Typically only TV’s have only HDMI ports, so it sounds like this is designed to hook up to gaming consoles more than PC’s. Not being able to show more than one input at a time in cockpit mode is a no go.
Yeah that is a bummer and hoping something they add in future
@@macrumors there looks like a usb-c port next to the oneconnect port? What is that for?
Except the consoles don't have the power for 4k 165hz.
What game are you playing? the one with the airplane?
Microsoft flight simulator
I love two things about this monitor, but it has a cripplling flaw. 1) I love that it is so early to market with Mini-LED and size and pivot. Wunderbar! 2) I love the 4x HDMI 2.1 inputs and the 3-up cockpit mode and the 4-up landscape mode. Super pragmatic. But… and it’s a gargantuan but… 1x input at a time? Suddenly, it can’t replace 3-4 monitors. 3-4 monitors have 3-4 HDMI inputs. The early to market advantage goes away awaiting a proper 4x input for proper 4-up display. This misfeature hogties this monitor into a single monitor plus 3x accessory computer monitors determined by the onboard (?) monitor computer.
Bizarro.
IMO, the people who would use this $$$$ monitor are the ones who can need and can afford heavy duty ($$$$) computers and multiple devices. Frankly, I love the concept for this display except for the part where it won’t support multiple inputs. Again, bizarro.
Rev the box to handle 4x inputs, and you (Samsung) have a sale. Otherwise, so close (and amazing) and yet so far. Sad.
I hope they can replace the Samsung One box with proper 4x HDMI 2.1 3-up/4-up (et al.) display, and then this thing is gangbusters.
I'd like to see this setup for productivity off an M1 Macbook Pro/Ultra
$3500? You can get a 65 inch LG cx OLED for that price and it has g sync, freesync and vrr support for PC gaming, Xbox series X gaming and ps5 gaming respectively.. and it does all that and can also go up to 120fps @ 4k. Plus it's 10 inches bigger. And you'd still have change to spare. I think this is just not priced right.
... and that would be a flat panel that is much larger -- making the side angles way to severe to be useful on a desk.
So it's not 165hz? Then no one cares. 120hz is old news.
I'm getting one just to play space sims on.
Imagine playing Starfield on this baby!! I won’t be able to purchase until there’s a steep sale, but once the cosmos is in alignment that’s the first thing I’m booting up 💫
Ya listo para probarlo con mi 1050Ti 🤣🤣🤣🤣
im buying 2
Ideally this would be 8k
So is this just a $3500 screen or is it an all in one computer?
screen with Tizen OS
3:28 🤣
Damnnnnn
It’s good for gaming, but too big to work, I’ve a dell 38” and I can tell you that most things need to live at center. Neck pain is a real thing if you don’t use properly. Also 4K while Apple is offering 5k.
That's the problem I'm having with these "gaming" monitor reviews. Some are also great for productivity but finding reviews for that seems nearly impossible - esp. with this model. I bought the LG Ultrawide 49" and find myself dragging everything to the center, as you stated.
The switch screen things is a big let down, you might as well swich between different inputs the old way absolutely point less, this tv is £3500 and has such limitations. Sorry to say they can keep it.
I'm good for $3500
This thing is a nice beta demostrator, but by not being able to display two inputs at one time. To me this means.... wait for the next gen and don't be an early adopter at that price.
Looks kind of ridiculous in vertical mode. But I’m sure there are people out there who would find it useful.
It’s great in person honestly lol
I think I’d prefer “cockpit mode” as it takes less space (width-wise) on desk and head up/down is more natural (ergonomic?) than swinging left/right.
if you really divide this in 3 parts you can get much much better 3 displays with higher resolution and larger ones for 3000 dollars.
Then what is the point of having 3 sections if you can't use them at the same time?? SOMEBODY F'ING EXPLAIN THIS TO ME. I'm glad you disclosed this travesty before I invested. So what in the world is being shown in the demos when the monitor is vertical? Mockups? I'm assuming that to use the full vertical mode in 4K your video card has to obviously support such an orientation/configuration.
No QD-OLED, no 1440p or above 32:9. SKIP!
I don't need to rotate and dont need the gimmicks just a nice 42 curved monitor with 2 inputs.Resolution is too low.
They don't make 42-49" 16:9 monitors or TV's anymore. :(
Shut up and take my money!
Pass. My Spectre monitor is sufficient for everything I do - and also has the lighting on the back - for 10% of the cost.
Not big enough.
Everyone: Please give us a flat 24"/27", 4K/5K, 120hz+, QD-OLED or mini-LED monitor
Monitor companies: Now introducing a massive 55 inch "monitor" with a ridiculous curve and no displayport!
They should have options for both to please the masses, and for that price display port is a necessity. Maybe/hopefully next generation
Why do you people want 120hz? Why are you so for taking everything backwards? Why do I want a 4k 120hz monitor when I can have. Samsung, LG, ASUS all have 4k monitors that can go up to 240hz.
You have fun with your 120hz monitor. Me if I had the GPU and CPU I would be buying LGs 32inch 4k UHD IPS 144hz.
@@evacody1249 I get where you’re coming from, but I also think 120fps is a great spot for most people.
Personally I would love to see GPUs on the market that can drive 240hz/4K monitors with some overheard. We’re a ways from there though (maybe the RTX6090 will touch it), so 120 is cool for now.
@@evacody1249 I said 120hz (PLUS) meaning starting from 120hz and upward... /facepalm
❤️✨💯❤️
And here is the story of modern Samsung and why they should have stayed making really really great washing machines... "#JustBecauseYouCanDoesn'tMeanYouShould" #Pointless
80ppi. Lol. Welcome to 2003
pixel amount has to be garbage
This will definitely revolutionize the way we watch porn. Porn watching is the key driver to display technology. No one says it, but it's not a real secret.
F.Y. Samsung for the price : 3599 f..king dollars !
That's the whole reason why I would get this is to have my playstation display at the same time as my computer now this monitor is pointless
$3500 for 4 monitors that you can't use as 4 monitors...... the dream of spreadsheets, UA-cam, work and games on the same monitor is ruined...
There's these things called windows...
If this comment gets 100k likes you gotta hook a brother up with this monitor
Seriously, you don't even have the monitor for review! You just feed on others and their videos.....
We don’t have it available for a full review yet, but we were definitely there for the press event and went hands-on with it, as seen in the video.
The best monitor that noone will buy due to high price. Plus no display port.
ew only 165 hertz thumbs down pshh
Samsung where is yours QD-OLED Ultra Wide Monitor, I don't want that Mini LED Trash Monitor.
This is a fake computer monitor, in reality it is just a 55" smart TV with some camouflage to look like a computer monitor. To start with, for PC users there are no display ports, so it will be a mess for VRR when using professional GPUs (as high end NVidia GPUs don't have HDMI, only Display Port). And for Mac users the HDMI is neither a good option as the new Macs only have HDMI 2.0 rather than HDMi 2.1 (this one is for Apple to blame...), and Thunderbolt is not mentioned in the specifications. Apart from that , brace for the typical ad garbage typically flooding all Samsung smart TVs. At 3500$ all this is unacceptable.
Name one high end GPU that don't have at least one HDMI 2.1 port.
My RTX 3080 has it, as does my girlfriends RX 6700 XT, so I really don't know what high end GPUs don't.
If anything, I would rather complain about the low PPI for desktop use.
@@mackan072 I said "professional" GPUs, that is A2000, A3000, A4000, A5000, A6000, A8000.
Good point about the TV genetics. I do think Samsung have nailed the form factor (curved screen, pivot for landscape + portrait) and (potential) 3-up and 4-up features… except for the glaring limitation of only 1 in put at a time. Bizarro.
All the window dressing of a computer monitor but with TV genetics (as you suggest). I hope Samsung replaces the TV “Connect One” box with a proper 3-up and 4-up 4x input support _computer monitor_ box in short order. Otherwise, hugely frustrating to see great tech go to waste, and lost opportunity for Samsung.
Fingers crossed.
@@javiej Those cards all all compatible with HDMI using an adapter. (per the spec sheets)
@@joefederer8863 yeah, adapters work... until you try 4k 120Hz HDR variable frame rate. True that many users will don't need those high end modes, but this is marketed as a high end computer "monitor" when it is just a TV. Also forget about support for different color space standards, they are not even mentioned.
$3,500! Let that sink in. This stupid thing is $3,500.
Display is beautiful but this thing is total crap 💩
Still a junk 16:9. Stop making 16:9's and make 21:9 the new standard since like everything is already 21:9 natively....
