  • This video is in no way meant to bash ‪@Samsung‬ - who makes a great monitor and the Odyssey Ark gaming monitor is a sight to behold! However, I have had specific issues with the device as well as problems with Samsung's design considerations when producing a $3500 display.
Join ‪@EDDocGamer‬ as he unboxes, assembles, reviews and laments this purchase in a very raw video, done at 1:30 in the morning after getting home from work.
It's obvious that I need a gimbal for more sturdy video, so bear with me!

Happy to hear I'm not the only one with the remotes being glitchy. It corrects itself pretty quickly (minute or less) but did get on my nerves whilst setting everything up. I'm sure it'll be addressed in a firmware update so it's no biggie. Plus, I've got everything set up to my liking now and probably won't need to use the remotes often anyways. I could return it and get another LG C2 OLED but then I'd lose out on the immersion that a 55", 1000R curved screen provides. Im gonna keep it at least for another week or so to see if SAMSUNG issues an update. After all, I get a 15 Day return window. Plus, it's a lot of physical work that I could potentially avoid. This thing is HEAVY AF! Lol...

Mine just came in yesterday. I've been enjoying it but just note to self, this monitor is MASSIVE and when you're playing FPS, because of the sheer size FOV will be a little zoomed in.

    • @NeverGiveUpz

The FOV is not zoomed in at all - The FOV is nothing to do with the size of a screen - You can play FPS games on a 65' TV and the FOV will still be the same.

Just wanted to post this follow up -
If you are using a Macbook Pro 16 (intel) you can use the Samsung Ark at 4k with a 120hz or 144hz refresh rate. This can be accomplished using an eGPU that contains an AMD Radeon™ RX 6800 XT Graphics Card. The Mac will recognize that card and allow you to use it in Mac OS. The 6800XT has an HDMI 2.1 output port which supports 4K at 120 or 144hz. While I dont currently have a Samsung Ark (yet) I do have the Samsung Neo Odyssey G9 monitor, which includes HDMI 2.1 ports. I have tested the connection (using it now to type this) and I am running 5120x1440 at 144hz via a HDMI 2.1 cable connection without any problems.
This would indicate that sending the same signal to a Samsung Ark should be successful.
So if you havent returned your ArK yet, you can consider this option!

Thanks for the hands on impressions and critiques. You are smart to realize that your desk setup isn't suitable for this screen. I see a lot of people using room and desk layouts with way too close of viewing distances. Larger screens are not made for sitting at the typical "up against the wall like a bookshelf" or "upright piano + sheet music" type desk setups. They demand an exceptionally large desk or separating the desk from the screen using a rail spine tv stand (the kind with a floor foot or caster wheels), a wall mount or pole mount, or a separate pillar stand hutch or slim desk to sit it on.
Even though a good curve allows somewhat nearer distance than a flat screen would perspective wise, curves actually have an R value that is the radius or focal point of the curve as if it were a lens. For the 55" ark as well as a g9 neo uw, the curve is 1000R = 1000mm = ~ 39.5" focal point. That's where all points on the screen surface are equidistant from you.
     ................................................................................................................
    PPD measurements of various screens
    ...............................................................................................................
    800R Curved 45"uw 3440x1400: 800mm radius of curve's focal point = 31.4" view distance = ~ 51.4 PPD
    900R Curved 45"uw 3440x1400: 900mm radius of curve's focal point = 35.4" view distance = ~ 56.6 PPD
    1000R Curved45"uw3440x1440: 1000mm radius of the curve's focal point = 39.4" view distance = 62PPD

People with this screen would probably be better off getting a strong metal rail spine floor VESA stand, the kind with a foot or caster wheels that can hold up to 100 Lb. That or a pole mount, or a wall mount. I don't prefer wall mounts personally because I like having modularity. That or get a pillar-like hutch or microwave stand or narrow bench desk to put the included ark stand on so you can separate the screen location from the desk location.
Samsung does include a 200x200 vesa mount with the Ark screen which still allows it to spin into portrait mode. However most of the floor TV stands use a push-pin height adjustment like a patio umbrella pole stand, or worse - use allen screws - so it wouldn't be as easy as floating the screen up and spinning it like you can do with a small screen on an ergo monitor arm. The push-pin method is still doable though with a little effort (esp with a ~ 50 Lb screen lift).
I'd definitely recommend the floor stand thing so you can get to the 1000R, 1000mm, ~39.4" radius of the curve as your view distance, where all points on the screen are equidistant from you like the focal point of a lens. Otherwise you'd probably need a big Interion 48" corner desk or something, and even with one of those you couldn't jam the desk up against the walls in the corner due to the width of this screen hitting the walls. You'd have to gap the desk away from the wall a bit. These kinds of large 42" - 48" - 55" screens are made for larger media/gaming command centers so they require a decent amount of space. They aren't made for upright piano + sheet music type setups.
Interion 48" (sides, the diagonal is longer) Each colored bar is around ~17" long. i.imgur.com/zzdJmak.jpg

Owning this I have 20/20 vision and I found I needed 90cm distance to eliminate the screen door effect, I can still detect the pixels but it’s acceptable. In another 10 years I may look at a replacement that’s 8k, but no computer can really drive 8k games at 165hz, and in 10 years I expect there will be a comparable monitor with 8k 320hz available. Anyway gaming on this is super fun and watching movies is amazing! I haven’t had the issues with the lag in the OS that the op has had, but I did get a software update as soon as I got it online. Fortunately for me I am using a fairly deep 8ft table but I too had to pop the back of the stand off into the air a tad to hit 90cm.

    • @elvnmagi9048
      @elvnmagi9048 Рік тому

      @@jessedaly7847
90cm is 35.4" which is a little better than 80cm. The focal point of the curve is where you get to 61 PPD though. Most people can see up to like 20/15 vision but like you said, more granular pixel structure being visible can be acceptable to some people, it's just not quite as good. Until we get ~ 150PPD we won't be able to drop text subsampling and AA to similar effect as 60PPD+ with text sub-sampling and aggressive AA. Samsung seems to have balanced the massive immersion factor of this screen at 55" inch size with a 1000mm radius which can still get you to an adequate (once text sub-sampling and aggressive AA are applied) 60 PPD+. Any smaller of a screen size vs the curve it would not be as immersive, and larger vs the curve at this rez and the PPD would be too poor.
People might choose to do 4k games scaled to 8k once we get 8k screens, so they'd be at least 120hz (to 240hz, if not higher perhaps using DSC) since they would be essentially running the game at 4k, and with higher frame rates than 8k would give to the Hz.
If I were you I'd spring for a rail spine tv vesa stand (the kind with a floor foot or caster wheels, some at ~ $150 usd) so that the screen distance can be independent of the desk measurements. Many of those floor stands can hold up to 100 Lb. That or get a pillar or small island style hutch or wooden microwave stand to put that Ark's stand/base on behind the desk to get more distance. I think you'd find the PPD better at 61 PPD and besides that, you would then be at the focal point of the 1000mm radius curve where all of the points on the screen would be equidistant from you. I can understand that people have room and desk layout constraints though and you are way closer to optimal than I think most people who buy large sized screens are from what I've seen of pictures of desk setups online 😝.

The software being lagging should get better with updates. Maybe plug the monitor to a smart switch so you can turn if off easily without physically unplugging it.
Input limitations is a pointless major con for me. I don’t understand why they went that route. I own the odyssey g9 and that has multiple input options. Hope they fix this with an update or with the next version.
Needing a deep desk for a 55 inch monitor is a must. I placed my odyssey g9 at the corner of my L desk for more distance. I also installed a corner sleeve for my keyboard and mouse. Maybe that can fix that one CON of yours.

The 1000R curve of this screen means that is has a 1000mm radius, which equates to ~ 39.5" view distance to be at the focal point of the curve where all points on the screen surface are equidistant from you. At that distance the screen delivers about ~ 61 PPD. Imo, the minimum for text subsampling and aggressive AA to be effective enough is no lower than ~ 60 PPD.

I get your point. I own a 48" OLED myself. The Ark is very good though since it's VA with a fairly high density FALD backlight array. However it's not the "infinite" black depth of being able to turn individual oled pixels down through black detail levels in darks all the way through to "off". The black depth of the FALD ark is around ~ 0.02 to ~ 0.03 nit black depth.
The tradeoff with OLED is that it's around 725 to 795 peak HDR color volume/HDR brightness (depending on the model) - so OLED rolls off it's accuracy at 400 or 500nit and compresses the rest of a HDR curve into the last 325 - 400nit. OLED also can't do sustained brightness levels very long, especially of large %'s of the screen in HDR scenes that have large % of the screen at high brightness/HDR color volume. So OLED's ABL kicks in pretty quickly dropping the screen luminance. Modern high end FALD screens can do 1200 to 2000nit and usually with much longer sustained brightness levels vs %'s of the screen than oled and it's ABL reflex kicking in. This ark screen can do 1000nit (HDR10) fully, and can even get up to ~ 1225nit in some content. OLED is great though and per pixel emmissive ultra blacks down to the pixel next to reasonably bright, colorful HDR highlights is very impactful. There are tradeoffs with either tech though, some of which I outlined above.

Gotta knock down this review rating due the fact that a majority of the video is so far zoomed into the screen you don't actually see the size/scale of it. The main draw and uniqueness of this monitor is it's presence and space on a desk and I can't even perceive that in this long video. Showing what the screen is displaying through a cell phone(?) lens is worthless unless it's to specifically contast something else in the frame at the same time.
I say this not to be mean, but maybe because you're not too familiar with the platform: the video itself is too choppy and it's shaky at the same time making for a terrible viewing experience. Tripods are cheap so please get two (standing one, and desk sitting one perhaps); and reduce your recording resolution to 1080p and increase your frame rate for UA-cam to 60fps. Lowering to 1080p might even improve your image quality depending on what camera you're using. I've had a 4K IPS calibrated monitor for several years now, and follow photography/videography UA-cam channels that typically have 4k video; but some don't. There are plenty of 1080p videos with far better image quality that I'm seeing in this 4K video. Part of why the image quality is so low is due to compression (and it's not UA-cam's fault), but not all of it. Also, a general product review video should be at most 10-12 mintues long. A detailed review maybe 20 minutes. An in-depth 30 minutes. No one is entertaining enough for UA-cam viewers to watch a video two or three times the length it should be. Your house isn't nice enough, your cat isn't cute enough, your humor and voice aren't soothing enough. Top UA-cam channels don't get that much attention, so you shouldn't expect it either.

To be completely honest, I mainly agree with what you’re saying. My situation was one where I got home from work very late at night, and had no one else to help me film. I’m actually using an $800 Sony camera and not an iPhone to record these videos. I do render the videos at 4K at 24 FPS to have a more cinematic frame rate and not a “home movie smoothness.” Unboxing is exceedingly difficult while holding a camcorder or camera in one hand, and then having only one hand to do the work. I’ve already invested in a tripod, and it will be here shortly, as well as a gimbal for more smooth. You learn more from criticisms than you do your accomplishments. Thanks

You forget another big downside beside this thing with having 2 HDMI inputs at the sametime. For example I want a PC in one part and xbox game pass streaming in another, the monitor wont let me do that. Its only youtube, internet, samsung tw and 2-3 random widgets. At least samsung should let ut use every application within the screen?????

Issue #1 Thats an Apple product, its normal to suffer. Switch to a real platform. Issue #2 honestly all TV SW is horrible even my LG TV is horrible. The real problem is the missing DP, which seems to be a cut down of development cost to just use the already existing TV solution with the one connect. also, the inability to have multiple monitor inputs simultaneously is really bad.
