    I think you did everything right to come into yourself. If there's one thing anyone should always take away from videos like these is that at the end of the day you have to put yourself first. Living in the closet or hiding yourself might make others happy but it will eat at your soul and consume you. It's a horrible feeling at the end of the day.

    Hey, thank you so much for this video - I just came out to my mom last night actually (a VERY traditional and religious catholic) and it was probably the hardest thing I've ever done or ever will do in my entire life. I'm in my second year at university and am finding it SO HARD to set boundaries when it comes to living out my identity in the way that I want to - It's these types of videos that shine a much-needed light unto the dark and frightening spaces of my life. Thanks again - I know your journey has and always will continue to help so many people like me tap into their deserved freedom!

    Katie, your comment about who would be watching this video was incomplete. I'm a straight white guy raised Catholic, in his 60's, watching this to better understand what my gay friends have gone through. One of my friend's situation is very much like yours with strict religious parents. I have 2 adult children and love them unconditionally, and have difficulty wrapping my head around parents who turn their backs to their own children. I hope your life is filled with joy and happiness. Thanks for making this video!

    Beautiful video Katie. My mom literally told me I needed psychiatric treatment when I came out to her as a (trans) girl. She's had time to adjust to the information but hasn't really become more accepting, she mis-genders me and uses my old name etc. I recently told her what I considered even more inflammatory information, that I'm bisexual. I've had people say some of the strangest things to me: "Can't you just choose one or the other (women or men to date)". "Can't you just be a man, I'll be in a relationship with you if you'll be a man". I try to be authentic me, try to discover what my truth is and to live it for myself. I don't seem to be happy when I don't do that as concretely as I am able to. I'm trying to meet my emotional needs myself and not be dependent on others for meeting those needs. I don't claim to have all the answers, even for myself. I've tried muddling through fulfilling others' needs and expectations, it doesn't make me happy. So happy for you, looking forward to more of your videos. Cheers. :)

    I feel this very deeply. Besides the religious upbringing and traumas I've dealt with, I'm also disabled and rely on my family, even as an adult. So, I don't know how to deal with this situation as an "I'm pretty sure I'm Bi" woman, taking into consideration lack of access and exposure into adulthood in the early aughts, still attempting to fit the mold until a few years ago, all the things, even though I had lgbtq+ friends who I loved and accepted, that same love wasn't necessarily meant for me (from me). Now, I'm better to myself, but terrified of losing my support system. They do... a lot...

    • @howkatiereads
      @howkatiereads  29 днів тому

      i’m sorry to hear about the trauma you’ve experienced but i can definitely relate! relying on family for support and worrying what “repercussions” could come from being 100% yourself is so hard. finding peace within yourself about who you are and being kind to yourself is what is most important. you don’t have to come out at all unless you want to 💞 wishing you the best in your searching

      @@howkatiereads thank you 🙂 one step at a time, right? I just find it funny that a month ago I wrote “I’m pretty sure I’m bi” But the question is actually, on the spectrum of queer, “how bi am I?” Because I’m definitely pretty far on the bi-lesbian sliding scale. But there’s still a little bit of wiggle room. 🤣

    So I got an odd question to ask not necessarily odd but just a question overall. My dad told me that he may have had gay feelings in himself but he never acted on them and me as a Demiwoman lesbian it’s starting to make sense why I feel the way I do thing is my dad is incredibly homophobic and has a lot of misogynist views which affect me. On top of that my dad is also Trumplican hardcore type in some ways and hyper religious zealot. How do I as a lesbian tell my dad I’m this way without upsetting his own problems with the things I mentioned and have dealt with too?

    • @howkatiereads
      @howkatiereads  29 днів тому

      hi dear! first of all thank you for watching and for commenting. 💞 this is a tough situation to be in. my advice to you would be… you are not responsible for your dads experiences with queerness or what may have formed his perspective on it. with that being said, you also do not have to share anything beyond what you are absolutely comfortable with sharing. if you want him to know this part of yourself, you can set terms for the conversation. for example: “i want you to know _____ but i do not want to hear anything you have to say about it unless it is loving and supportive of me” and if he reacts poorly, then you can end the conversation there. but you do not have to explain yourself or make things comfortable for the other person you are coming out to. sometimes people need time to process, but you don’t have to be there and help them process. that is something they can do on their own or with their own support systems. does this make sense?
      wishing you all the best. having family that does not support and are in politically/religiously extreme groups makes it so much more complicated.

    Thank you for sharing your journey of self-discovery. You light up when you talk about Jess. Christians opposed to those who are LGBTQ+ should consider the following. There is an anti-gay bible verse found in Leviticus 20:13, "If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."

    The problem for those supporting the anti-gay verse is that no one follows most verses in Leviticus. People are not being put to death for cursing their mother and father in verse 9, nor for adultery in verse 10. They are not performing animal sacrifices per chapters 1-9, nor are they breaking dishes when someone has a venereal disease per chapter 15.
    When we read the new testament gospels we find that those who upheld Mosaic law were the ones out to harm and kill the one called Jesus. Jesus didn't follow all the Mosaic laws, he healed on the sabbath, his disciples weren’t fasting and he didn’t follow Leviticus 20:10 where those caught in adultery are to be killed. He instead said to the scribes and Pharisees, “He who is without sin, let him throw the first stone.” Jesus introduced new teachings to replace the old. John 13:34 states, “A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”
    Jesus was inclusive, tolerant and accepting of people’s differences and status in life. He spoke with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well when Jews were not supposed to socially interact. He ate with tax collectors and sinners. He healed the insane and the Roman centurion’s servant.
    People should realize that breaking dishes for venereal disease, opposing LGBTQ+ lifestyles and animal/human sacrifice to appease God should be categorized as primitive, outdated beliefs.
    Some so-called religious people claim those who are LGBTQ are going to hell. I have been to hundreds of seances with two of the finest mediums in the US. The spirit guide, Evening Star, talked about heaven and hell. She said they were different for different people. She cited the example of listening to rock n roll music. Some people would feel like they are in heaven while others would think they are in hell. “In my Father’s house are many mansions.” speaks of the variety and diversity in the Spirit World.
    Please consider the following words from Rod McKuen, (not an exact quote, but close).
    "It does not matter who you love or how you love, but that you love. The good in man is God made manifest and loving is the contribution to that good and to that only God. For in the end the act of loving anyone is the act of loving God.”

      So many things is wrongly interpret
      1. I agree he ate with siners but did not justify they sin instead he said you sins are are forgiven go and sin no more - his purpose to save us from our sin
      2. Clearly he said man shall not live with another man as with a woman it is wrong/ clear in the scriptures marrage is always between man and woman / no way in scripture marrage is between same sex/
      3 no way is scripture do it say it is ok for a man to lie with another man.
      4 if you say the luvitus law do not apply then it is ok to steel and kill because the same law conden it
      5 biological - woman was design for men the parts connect to each other / unlike same sex / we are a product of a man and woman coming together / not same sex coming together / that is how we guarantee we will not be extinct/ same sex coming together is a perversion of mature plan for humanity/ and is wrong

    • @edwardcummings4358
      @edwardcummings4358 11 місяців тому

      @@alanaban1840 1. We disagree on two points. Firstly Jesus never talked about homosexuality. Homosexuality is natural and normal as scientists have discovered 1500 species that engage in some form of same sex behavior.
      Secondly, some people think that Jesus allowed himself to be killed as a human sacrifice. The idea that animals or people need to be killed to appease God is a primitive, outdated belief. Jesus was teaching psychology in the book of Matthew when he said, Let it be to you according to your faith.” and “Who is among you who by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?” He taught that people should follow the golden rule, treat others the way that they want to be treated. We have to save ourselves from wrong thought and wrong action.
      2 & 3. You wrote, “Clearly he said man shall not live with another man as with a woman it is wrong/ clear in the scriptures.” This is a quote from the book of Leviticus, not Jesus. Remember that Jesus and his followers were selective as to which Mosaic laws they followed and which they didn’t.
      In St. Matthew chap 12 the Pharisees asked Jesus, “Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?” He said, “It is lawful to do good on the sabbath.” then healed the man’s hand. When the Pharisees saw the hungry disciples pluck grain they said to Jesus “Behold your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath.” Jesus approved of doing what was unlawful.
      You wrote, “marriage is always between man and woman.” That is not what the bible records. The old testament had a number of men with more than one wife while others had wives and concubines. The bible also says there were eunuchs.
      4. You wrote, “If you say the Leviticus law do not apply then it is okay to steal and kill because the same law condemns it. We should do what Jesus did, analyze the teachings. Jesus was a mystic who taught and demonstrated what was possible when a person let the God in them work through them.
      5. You wrote that humanity will go extinct if we accept same sex relationships. There are over 8.1 billion people in the world which is far too many. Many people breathe dirty air and drink unsafe water. As people aren’t willing to control the human population nature will do it, because nature shows it seeks a balance of predator and prey.
      You wrote that same sex is wrong and a perversion. The LGBTQ+ lifestyles are right and best for some people. A person’s physical body is chemically wired to be a certain way. Parents report that they knew their child was gay at three or four years of age. They were born that way, it is not a conscious choice. The everywhere present creative power we call God wants diversity. No two people are exactly alike. The fingerprints and DNA are different. The world need societies that show mutual respect to each other and to nature.

      @@edwardcummings4358 dear sir u are all wrong / the word homosexual is not in the bible that is true - what is the scriptures reference to in in Leviticus 18-22/ remember Jesus quote and confirm the tora. / How did we get the scriptures 2peter1-20 / 2timothy 3_ 16-17
      The writers did not do this on they own will they were inspired by god so it is the word of god not man.
      They were men with several wife in scripture but it was conden/ no way in scripture do u see a same sex relationship is praised as something to do but conden
      The penis was made to be inserted into the vergina not into the anus / when is done it is a misfit square peg in around hole and cannot fulfill it true purpose
      The anus is an exit not and entrance / that is y the risk of STD is higher in homosexual men than the hetrosextal men
      In the beginning god said woman is made for man not man for man / the scriptures clearly teaches man and wife not husband and husband/ our generation what to change what is clearly thought in scripture / they change the truth for a lie / from creation / we do not Change the scripture to suite our perverted lifestyle but let the word change us / yes god tell us we must love one another as our selves but it says al love do not rejoice in sin but in the truth/ we all know the truth woman was made for man / you are trying to twist things to suite u Life style

      Yeah. Being brainwashed into christianity from a young age even to the extent of being homeschooled to shelter them from reality is sad and happens to way too many children.

    I think you should offer your parents Grace during this time. Remember they are spiritually convicted about homosexuality, so they have an opposing view, I think that you should consider their position and their feelings also. Continue to be their daughter and when they are ready to accept your partner, they will or maybe they won't but that shouldn't affect you as their daughter having a relationship with them, unless they are gay bashing you when y'all speak.. if that's not happening then you should continue to be in their lives. Girlfriends and boyfriends.. husbands and wives come and go but your parents are forever🙏

      Parents are not always forever either. If they can't accept her for who she is she doesn't need to continue to put herself in a position of rejection. That is toxic when you are trying to heal. I don't think she needs people telling her what she SHOULD do. That is not why she is here.

      @@finallyfree2BMe no you're being selfish ,self conceited and dismissive. Your feelings is not the only one that matters. As long as her parents isn't disrespecting her, calling her homosexual slurs and etc then she should continue to be in their lives! They have a right to reject her being a lesbian if they are spiritually convicted. Respect their position, she don't have to share that aspect of her life with them. She doesn't need their approval, only their respect. Also many parents do change and accept it after a while that's why grace is needed.
