This wasn't just a brilliant move, it was the greatest move ever. Hogan's heel turn, IMO, is the biggest and greatest single moment in the history of the business. It had it all. The shock value, the timing, the reactions, and the right people in the right spots at the right time. It not only reignited Hogan's career, but it completely revolutionized the business. Without Hogan's heel turn and the formation of the NWO, there would not have been an Attitude Era which means no DX, no Rock, no Stone Cold Steve Austin, no Hell in a Cell (and Mankind being thrown off it), any of it.

@@sportsfan5548exactly, alot of younger fans wanna downplay or discredit what hulk brought to the nWo when In reality the storyline would have probably died a sad death if nash and hall (in kayfabe) didn't deliver with a megastar as their third man.

It was a shock and it wasn’t. Obviously Hogan was the ultimate baby face. But on the flip side because of that , it’s not exactly rocket science to know that if he turned heel it would be a momentous occasion. His career was slow then. He really didn’t have much to lose by trying it Plus a lot of hulkamanuacd were now in their late teens and 20s and had moved on from wrestling to other interests. What a great time to pull them back in as a heel

Agreed and it wasn't until the 11th hour that he decided to do it. He was stale in WCW and wasn't getting the reaction he usually got. He knew he needed to change and, to his credit, he did.

A lot of people may have forgotten, though, that Hulk Hogan had actually started his career in Wrestling as a Heel, and, at one point, back in the late 1970s, or early 1980s, had been managed by "The Hollywood Fashion Plate", Classy Freddie Blassie! This guy was one of the most notorious, and most vicious, Men, that has ever been involved with Wrestling! Even as a Heel, he's still revered as one of the All-Time Greats!

One of the greatest and most effective shock moments in pro wrestling, it really elicited a pure emotional response. All the fans fell for it hook, line, and sinker- myself included. Those fans that were throwing the garbage into the ring were the biggest marks of all !! They were living the moment of Hogan's betrayal of the fans and were angry!!! Another similar moment for me was when Hogan spray painted the Big Gold Belt. I saw that on tv and it made my stomach churn.

I remember watching Nitro on May 27th the day Scott Hull invaded WCW the first time. I remember thinking OMG!! Razor Ramon is joining WCW I had no idea his name was Scott Hull. I was so happy but had no idea how this would change the wrestling world forever. The NWO, Hogan’s heel turn and the birth of Crow Sting would bring on wrestling utopia in the attitude era.

Hulk Hogan was the biggest babyface of all time in the WWF and the biggest heel of all time in WCW. Both times he did that, both companies each generated millions of dollars and saw success it had never even dreamed of before. Then he came back to the WWF and was STILL more over than anyone in the company.
Say what you want about Hulk. The man is the biggest-name in the history of this industry. The Rock is the most "successful," but we saw at Wrestlemania X-8 who was the "bigger" star in that 20 x 20.

  • @alexello1189

Eric wanting sting to turn heel is a laughably bad call. Sting was a wcw pureblood. He was the people’s champion. Having him turn and insult the fans would have pushed the dive in ratings even earlier. Hogan was former wwf. It made sense he would also align with two other top wwf guys.

If Bischoff thought this was a bad idea because of the reaction he didn't know wrestling, this was the last time someone had legitimate heat. It would not have worked as well with Sting, because the Outsiders were invaders from the WWF, the Leader of the Outsiders had to be the biggest star in the WWF's history, that's what made sense. And you had two options to eventually end the NWO, one was Sting would do it as a paragon of WCW or Bret Hart would do it given his recent history and hatred of the WWF.
    Tragically they took neither.

The same thing w Ric Flair & Eddie Guerrero. Dominick Mysterio has a UA-cam channel 2005 a few years back where he uploaded a scene where Eddie is standing in the sun doing a promo in a park as Dominick is swinging. Between the 1:00 - 1;15 mark watch Eddie's left eye. Im obviously living w Regrets as well. I use to be a wrestling fan & wanted to be a wrestler. Literally, everything that could go wrong in life ? Prevented me to do so. Just like in karate, power lifting... Army... Moving up in my current career ...
