- Outdoors Inspiration, Shamus McCaffery, sets out for a snowy, winter wild camp in windy Dartmoor weather. With his trusty companion Petra the German Shepherd, he pitches a Hilleberg Anjan 2 tent and tests the Cumulus Teneqa 850 sleeping bag. He recounts the recent history of Antarctic sledge dogs and the last huskies of Antarctica. With Nearly four decades of wild camping experience, Shamus shares his skills and knowledge on Dartmoor National Park, where he continues to live and work.
Shamus please tell us you are OK.....Youve been quiet for months! Miss you 😟
Seconded! I was following you closely but haven't heard from you since the pandemic?!
Hi Jonny, all is well now, but I wasn’t for a while. I’m in the middle of moving house with everything in storage at the moment, once we’ve settle I’ll be back up and running 👍😊🐶
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Oh gosh that doesn't sound 100% positive but I'm glad you're on the mend Shamus! Really looking forward to seeing your Dartmoor videos again, but don't rush back if you need more time. I'm just happy you're OK. Take care!
@@outdoorsinspiration9284I have just watched your 6 tips for camping with a dog, hoping to see adventures of Shamus and Petra. Wishing you both well
Shamus! Are there new videos coming we miss you!!!
Hello Shamus...and on behalf of all your viewers I would like to thank you for the wonderful productions and informative content. Sincerely hope you are keeping well. All the best..as you can see from the comments..you are missed.
Great video.enjoyed it a Lot. 😊😊😊
Thank you 😊 I appreciate that 😊👍🐶
Going through all your videos. Love your down to Earth, no nonsense approach. Please come back and do some more hiking/camping videos, we miss you.
That’s very kind, thank you - back soon 🐶 😊🐶
Hi Shamus, I've been enjoying catching up on all your videos since I've discovered your channel. I've noticed that it's been quite a few months since you last posted, so I just wanted to send you good wishes. I hope you're keeping well. Looking forward to your next video, hopefully some time soon! All the best.
Any news :) Are you ready for a big comeback ?
Hopefully you will be doing more videos soon :) Really enjoyed watching them all.
Petra and Shamus - Really enjoyed this film once again. Its fantastic to be taken through your winter camping experience. Tent looked solid and great to see Petra close to you in the tent and later having so much fun in the snow. How dare you give her the prolite, she should have been on the NeoAir Xtherm!
Thanks Tom, we couldn't have both of us sleeping on 'crisp packet' mats - the noise would have been unbearable 😂
we want more! come on Shamus, brilient personality and great content.
Thanks Carl - back soon 👍🐶😊
Hello Shamus, I haven't seen a new video posted on your channel in recent weeks, and so I just wanted to say a belated Happy New Year to you and Petra. I hope you're keeping safe and well. As ever, I look forward to your next video on your fab channel. Until then, enjoy your Chicken Korma's (with rice! :)) and happy hiking and wild camping. Best wishes, Pete!
Hi Pete 😊 Thanks for popping in to comment - normal service will be resumed shortly - onwards and upwards 👍🐶👍
A man a tent and a dog. Got to love it. Great content. 😎
Petra says, especially the dog bit 🐶 Thank you 🐶👍😊
Hey Shamus, I'm really missing seeing you. Are you OK? I'm on nights all thru this lovely weather (on covid ward) and I wish you could show me what I'm missing on dartmoor right now😔
It's great that you can just get out like this. Being where I live I have to plan trips to decent gnarly countryside. I have formerly always looked at camping as something to do at the end of a long day hiking. However, having seen various content, including this excellent channel, I now see the benefit of a quick jaunt out.
Thank you Ian 😊 To be honest, I would rather have a good hike as well, you always sleep better. But the snow was about to drop and an opportunity was there - I'm lucky that I can just respond in that way 😊👍🐶
Excellent video as ever Shamus. Would love to hear more about the work, jobs, experiences you've had... the husky tale and pics were great
Thank you Laurence 😊 👍🐶
Yes, you see I'm not the only one who's fascinated to hear of your exciting trips and work in Antarctica! Do share more.... It helps pass time over dreary evenings!
Shamus is a chap I could sit and listen to for ages, very fascinating. Shamus should do a one man show !

Hi Shamus, hope you, Petra & family are well. Hopefully see you back out with the videos soon, lockdown has hit many in different ways.
Hope everything is well with you and you managed to get moved into your new home.
Good to see you both back, I was getting a little concerned as it's been a while 😀 Nice to the Moor under the first white blanket of the year. Glad you enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as Petra lol 🤣 I like the Cumulus sleep systems also, I rate them highly and agree with the lofting, it's quite amazing!

Hi Shamus, just touching in to see how are you and Petra are ? Gosh, hasn’t the weather turned, very cold but at least no camping at the moment 😩 have you been getting out walking a lot ? Be nice to hear from you. Best wishes Michael.
Hi Michael. I was asking the same thing. Gone quiet!
@@Fellmandave1 it’s very strange, Shamus was on here twice weekly and then all of a sudden disappeared. It’s a real shame at it was him that inspired me to start wild camping.

Superb again, really interesting info on the huskies. You should do more of it. Thanks
Thank you Paul 👍😊🐶
Great trip, loved it. Off up to Braemar after work on Friday for a cheeky overnight and early morning hike
That sounds fantastic - at least the snow will stick around for you 👍😊🐶

What a wonderful video Shamus. I really hope that all is well with you and Petra. It's been a while since you posted but hope more vids are on the way this summer. Thank you- terrific!
Nice to see the snow brings out the child/puppy in you both!... why do dogs like snow so much?
Thanks John, I did have a snowball fight with Petra as well... But it seemed a little one sided 😂 Dogs see the world trough scent as much as anything else, I thing fresh snow must seem like an amazing sensory experience, where the ground scent has been masked. 🐶👍
Lovely to watch you are Petras adventures. Great story about the huskys. Wow tough dogs.

Great video, my friend! Great winter camp! Enjoyed watching, your and bushcraft skills are terrific! And the surrounding nature is amazing. Cheers from Russia, bruv, and welcome to my channel about special Russian bushcraft tips and hacks! Best Regards, Yuriy! 😊😄
Sharing a tent with dog must be nice if there's room, it probably adds some warmth too. I've never shared a tent with a dog but did share once with a squirrel, I didn't realise until I woke up and saw biscuit crumbs on my sleeping bag - then looked round next to me to see a grey squirrel frozen in mid-bite holding my last jaffa cake.
Haha 😂 😆 🤣 Now that is funny! I don't know about the dog adding warmth, I would like to think so. I do know she adds, mud, hair, damp and condensation 🐶 She started moulting during this trip.
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 That seems like bad timing - moulting during a snowfall but maybe it's normal, I haven't a clue.
The worst thing about the squirrel story (apart from having to sew up the hole it chewed in the inner) was that those jaffa cakes were limited edition ones and I had to wait another 15yrs before they re-released that flavour and I could finally see how they tasted 🤣

Your family must think you're absolutely nuts going out in the dark to camp in a snowstorm!
Perhaps put in your written summary you could put a rough idea of where you were? (I couldn't make it out at all).
Useful info on the equipment needed to stay warm.
Really enjoyed seeing Petra playing excitedly in the snow - and the shot of her sitting next to the snowman (but you should have made a snow dog!).
More of your Antarctic memories and snaps please.... So interesting to us normal people who will never go there. What happened to the repatriated dogs?
You too stay safe and take care.
Hi Peter, the dogs went to work with an Inuit team if I recall correctly, they were flown north at the end of Summer 1994.

Thank you 😊 All is well, but various complexities surrounding lockdown and restrictions have been disruptive - back VERY soon 😊👍🐶
I really enjoyed watching that. The slides from the past were also interesting. Petra cam always makes me smile. Never knew that about windchill. Thumbs up well done 👍
Thank you 😊 Wind chill is often used to 'overstate' the air temperature - but the air temperature is what it is - as wind passes of the skin it make it feel colder, but it actually isn't - but it will cool down quicker 👍🐶😊
Just wondering if you are going to post any more videos? You have the best UK wild camping channel that I have found, so hope you have not decided to stop.
Hi David, thank you that’s very kind 😊 I will be doing stack loads of videos, but I have paused due to lock down. I arrived in Wales and the country locked down, then when I returned to Dartmoor England locked down... the lawn has been like a swimming pool so that has rules out ‘garden stuff’ - So absolutely yes, much more to come but I want to make the best quality that I can. 👍😊🐶
Thank you again for asking, your comment is so encouraging for me.

Hi! I'm in the market for a 4 season hilleberg tent under 3.5 kg with a footprint. It has to be suitable in strong winds (70 mph) and harsh weather. It also has to be roomy enough for me and my kit and the odd occasion when I may take a medium size dog(depending on the weather the dog can sleep in the vestibule). Ventilation is a big thing for me aswell.
If you could help that would be great. All the best dan!

Great video, I enjoyed the section and images of working with Huskys. The lighting in the morning looked superb for filming. More please Shamus more!
Thanks Gordon, you're right, the following day's light looked just right while I was heading home 😊🐶👍
Can I ask what thermal jacket Petra is wearing?
It's a cheap thing from Pets at Home - it is very light and compacts down very small - It's fleece with a nylon shell. The only time she wears it is in the tent, it isn't robust enough fo anything else. She has another Ruffwear jacket which is far most sturdy for keeping the weather off, but we don't take that wild camping because the is generally wearing the palisades pack 🐶👍🐶
Sorry Petra! Too spicey for pooches🤣
I don't understand why she prefers it to dog kibble 😂

Hi, really enjoying your videos so far. I came accross your channel because I have been looking into the Anjan 2 for pretty much the same things as you’re using it for, one man and his dog! I had reservations about it being a 3 season tent and it obviously wasn’t a problem in the snow for this trip, but how much further would you trust in more windy or heavier snow/cold conditions? Thanks and keep doing what you’re doing!
Thank you Stuart 😊 have you seen my video with Anjan in the wind? I’ve used it in wind rain and now snow. At the end of the day, it is a 3 season tent, but the space and weight is great because it just seems to cope with whatever is thrown at it. I can’t really say more than that, I wouldn’t want to mislead you, however, I’ll continue to use it throughout winter and believe that it’s absolutely up for the task. If the wind is too punishing I would probably take a 4 season tent, I have a Soulo and and Akto. 😊
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 I have seen your other video yes thank you. Just never had a tunnel tent before and feel a bit skeptical. Also Hilleberg tents are no where to be found right now so other options such as the Akto just aren’t viable. Need to move away from the ‘one tent does all’ mindset really. Thanks for taking the time to reply
Happy New Year to you Shamus. How are you ? Well back into another lockdown 😟 I did manage to get a camp in last week, my first winter one at minus 2 !! It was ok but it told me I needed a 4 season mat and a better sleeping bag. Will watch your kit video for ideas. I have just ordered some Scarpa Terra boots today, so looking forward to receiving. Expect it is a bit chilly down in Devon at the moment ? Best wishes Michael.
Thanks Michael - how are the boots behaving?
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Hey Shamus, lovely to hear from you. Boots arrived on Sat and not had chance to wear them as yet, long walk planned for later this week. I had to go up a size in the boot ! How are you ?
Someone else was recommending Cumulus kit as being very light - not as light as PHDesign stuff but a fraction of the cost. Not had any direct experience of it myself but it looks good and competitively priced for down gear.
I have a cumulus down quilt and underquilt, doesn't come treated with hydrophobic down unless you pay extra but I really rate the quality
I would say so 👍
I would say the quality knocks Rab into a cocked hat, but I have never owned PHD or Western Mountaineering kit.

Hi live live not far from you and wild camp pew tor and sheep's tur. What budget one man's and his two dog tent could you guid me towards. I'm on a budget and want to do more winter wild camping. Thanks in advance.
Hi Andy 😊 I don’t really do ‘recommendations’, I just waffle on about the kit that I use, that way I don’t pretend to have knowledge of gear I haven’t used. However, the answer really would depend on a number of factors you might want to ask yourself for instance a) what weather you might expect? b) what is your actual budget?
The Berghaus Brecon 2 looks good to me for a sizeable tent for two dogs - they had two ex display one in Go Outdoors for £60 / £70 but normally can be had for £120 - the tent looks pretty solid, but relatively heavy. A really good investment for size would be a Hex style tent Bob at backpackinglight sells them but you’re into £200 by then. OEX tents are cheaper by far, but the quality isn’t great, if you look on my videos you will see my views on an OEX Rakoon 2.1 around £80 but not going to take a winter blow to be fair. And then there is always dependable Vango - a two person tunnel tent would be cheap and light enough with space for 2 dogs.
Anyway, those aren’t recommendations, just my thoughts. I hope it helps 😊👍
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 than that's give me ideas. I understand your view on recommendations. I'll watch moor 😂 of your adventures. Great vids BTW. Never know you mite see us about. Take care

Wow you have had a very interesting life. Thanks for the story about the dogs it was very interesting. Does Petra not puncture the air mat. I have been thinking about that but worried the dog bursts it. Really enjoyed watching. Great information. 👍
Hi Steve, yes I've .. ahem, been about a bit 😂 None of my dogs have damaged any of my camping equipment, I use quality gear that is made from sometimes 'fine' materials but I work on the basis that if an accident happens, it happens 😊 But... fingers crossed 🤞 It never has happened, I don't go out of my way to protect anything, as you can see 👍
Hello Shamus. Glad to hear nothing punctured. Sometimes when I'm in the Soulo and I'm with the dog I take a Bivi to put my sleeping mat in. To protect it from the dogs claws. So when I saw Petra on the mat, I said why do I bother lol.
I used to cover my sleeping bag with a lightweight bivvi to stop ‘doggyness’ - I just accept that if she does puncture it, I’ll have to repair it... but she doesn’t 😊

Thank you for the video! Was this on Saturday? I was meant to go but cancelled because of the weather. With snow and cold conditions how big an impact does the tent play in keeping you warm?
It was Thursday Night / Friday, the snow had gone by Saturday. The inner of the tent can raise the temperature, that's because you are radiating heat within it. The biggest impact the tent has is keeping you sheltered.
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 thanks for the info. I think the mesh inner for my DD pyramid tent should do the trick. 🤞 thanks again!
