  • Makur Maker is changing the basketball world! The #16 ranked player in the class of 2020 announced earlier this year that he will be skipping college and going pro but he never actually declared for the draft. So yesterday he announced his top 4 schools he was considering which were Kentucky, Memphis, UCLA, & Howard. I guess he couldn’t wait to announce it but just hours after his top 4 came out he committed to HOWARD! This is huge news in the basketball world as this is one of the first 5 star prospects to commit to an HBCU! What do you think of the move⁉️ 👀

Playing sports is about winning. That's the problem is that most of these athletes just play for the money and not the glory. Very bad decision on his part. Decommit and go to UCLA. All of these lower major schools will always be 14-16 seeds and have no shot that the Sweet Sixteen if they even make the tournament. There will never be an HBCU or a UT-Arlington or NJIT type low-major that lands a recruiting class of McDonald's All Americans, and that's the only way they would ever have a shot to go deep in the tourney.

I think more of these great young black players should go to HBCU , 1st black schools will get money, black coaches will get money, they won’t be called niggas everyday on instagram or Facebook, they won’t be abused by coaches ,I mean I can go on and on . If this becomes a trend it would be one of the greatest things to happen in our community.imagine if Labron had gone to Morehouse the money that would have brought.

I see a lot of people takling about him going to a "black college". As a european it sounds weird. Can somebody explain why "white" or "black" colleges exist? I'm genuinly curious. When people choose in which college they want to go, is the choice conditionned by which color they are??

Basically due to the systemic racism in the US hbcus( historically black colleges , spellman, Howard, morehouse etc..) Have never got the chance to flourish and or the funding to be considered a top college for black athletes to attend . Now with all the racial tension in the world today if all of the top black athletes migrate to historically black schools not only will it force people to watch and generate revenue for hbcus , but also gain exposure and skin in the game for scouts to watch them play . So basically it’s leveling the playing field . Since Duke , Kentucky , Michigan etc... Have profited off black athletes for years , now they want to give back to their own . If that makes sense .

"Black Colleges" in the US were established during reconstruction and Jim Crow so that blacks could go to college since they weren't allowed to go to other universities. The other universities started to allow black students to attend primarily during the late 60s and early 70s. Black student athletes for the most part spearheaded this "integration" which drastically shrank the footprint of "black colleges" which are often referred to as Historically Black Colleges and Universities or HBCUs. Now that there is somewhat of a "racial awakening" taking place in the US, many alumni and supporters of HBCUs see this as an opportunity to attract more students particularly athletes whose talent generate millions of dollars annually for the schools that they attend. HBCUs are often under funded and do not have the expansive booster and alumni bases that the other schools have. All students are allowed to attend HBCUs and they do at about the percentages that black students attend other universities.
