Nick D'Virgilio has been a musician since the age of five. His father got sick of him hitting the pots and pans and brought home a set of 1965 blue sparkle Ludwig drums and he never looked back. The music bug had taken hold and was not going to let go.
Nick was a self-taught musician until he attended the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, California at the age of 17. From that point forward, Nick's professional career has been in full swing.
In 1994, Nick met the late Kevin Gilbert (Toy Matinee, Giraffe) and from that chance meeting at a ski resort nightclub, his career took off to the next level. Nick joined the UK pop group, Tears For Fears, in 1995 and played with them until 2008. In 1996, Nick replaced Phil Collins in Genesis and recorded on the album Calling All Stations. Nick has also played and recorded for such artists as Peter Gabriel, Sheryl Crow, Mike Keneally, Eric Burden and the Animals, and many others.
Founded in the early 1990s, Nick's original band, Spock's Beard, was simultaneously climbing the ranks in the Prog-Rock world. During his 20 years with Spock's Beard, Nick was part of ten studio releases, live DVDs, and many tours of the United States and Europe. Later in his tenure with Spock's Beard, Nick also took over the role of lead singer as well as holding the drum chair for studio recordings.
Building on the exposure and the opportunities that arose from these recording and touring credits, Nick became a busy teacher and clinician for Paiste Cymbals, Alesis, Sonic Reality, IK Multimedia, Meinl Cymbals and Percussion, Mapex Drums, Vic Firth Drumsticks, and Aquarian Drumheads. He performed and taught master classes at drum festivals, music schools, and music conventions all over the world.
In 2010, Nick joined the company Cirque Du Soleil. He was part of their touring show, TOTEM, for 4-1/2 years as drummer, lead singer, and assistant bandleader.
Nick joined Sweetwater Sound in August 2014, where he creates how-to content, demonstration videos, and product reviews. He also teaches music and pro audio classes and serves as the Sweetwater Studios' first-call session drummer.

The man is a star. I must have watched this a dozen times in the last week.
Same bro, his style, his voice, his talent, just addictive.❤️🤘🏼
Nick is Amazing fusion drummer. His skill level is Elite.
GENIUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
I'm ashamed that I didn't know about him well. I even thought he was just a guy from Sweetwater music shop who happened to be too good at drumming... He is awesome and truly talented musician. Respect.
He is a beast multi-instrumentalist and a great singer, with a long musical history.
I believe he played with Phil Collins
I had the exact same thought!
No seriously though, me too haha
Oh no 🤦♂️... Shame on you 😁. Just kidding. He is a real musician... Just listen for example, spock's beard, Genesis, d'virgilio Morse jennings, etc...etc... etc...
Jesus. What an absolute monster! Well done nick!!!
This is nothing. You should see him do this live with his old band Spock's Beard... it is amazing
@@TedSchoenling this is old, song comes from 4th studio album
It would be so nice if one of these days, Spock's Beard would do a reunion tour with the classic line-up playing songs like Gibberish, The Light, At The End Of The Day, In The Mouth Of Madness, Solitary Soul, etc...
Try this in the meantime ua-cam.com/video/KezElj_X57k/v-deo.html
Not sure if you've seen it but at Morsefest 2016 they did the entire Snow album live! ua-cam.com/video/KezElj_X57k/v-deo.html
very gentle giant!
And he sings, too... Fantastic performance Nick
this vocal & drum performance is next level. Those vocal lines are HARD and the drums are incredible. Doing them at the same time? INSANITY. Nick is so good. Lawdy.
Smokin!
Got a bit of a Gentle Giant feeling ...great performance :)
Yeah
Damn! So Nick does't only drum, but also sings and he's pretty freaking great at it!
Mind blown! 🤯
This man is still somehow underrated. Hope this one sheds some light. And such a PROFESSIONAL drummer. Read about him in Modern Drummer mags for years and so grateful for Nick. 🤘
You can visit Nick at sweet water.in fort Wayne Indiana.great guy and down to earth 🌎.oh and take a selfie with Nick .
and now he's playing for Mr Big 😮
Bravo Nick, cheers from France.
Gibberish is one of my favorite tunes from Spock’s Beard’s older catalogue. I’ve been looking for a good version of Nick playing it for a while, this is fantastic!! Especially hearing the “all that is shall be” harmonies, and the lead vocals which I wasn’t expecting!!
Nick D'Vir-F***inggillio! My lord, what a phenomenal musician!
Been listening to Spock beard for two decades now.glad you found him to.old Nick is a monster drummer.
It's always a pleasure to see Nick performing. He makes it seem so simple to chop and sing like that. Amazing!!
This is very gentle giantesque ;-)
Such a beautiful, flowing style of playing. Instantly recognizable, and one of my favorite underrated drummers.
Honestly, one of my favorite drummers. Unbelievably precise, technically brilliant and owns the pocket like no other.
Fantastic performance! 👏👏👏
Neal Morse the genius songwriter surrounded by incredible performers produced an amazing catalog of music. Thanks to all of them!
Seen him in the band Spocks Beard opening for Dream Theater. That was my first time seeing him play. Very excellent drummer that's for sure.
Fucking love this guy. Love his playing, singing, guitar and keys work. The guy is just a giant of a musician.
Looking forward to seeing him in Mr. Big!
If you haven't heard his early work with Spock's Beard, GET TO IT!! Must Listen albums: " The Light" and my favorite, "Day for Night". He's also played with Kevin Gilbert (RIP) and the short-lived rock band, Toy Matinee. Nick is an amazing drummer and all-around incredibly talented musician. I hear he happens to be a top-notch human being, as well, kinda in the same spirit as Gregg Bisonette.
I love the cymbal salad, shows that he's going after sounds not labels
Nick is NEXT LEVEL!!
Well I just became a Spock’s Beard fan for life.
Holy SHIT - what just happened?!
I loved The way He plays The drums, Mr Big did a great choice
Holy shit I'm just learning that Nick's got pipes!

How always, Nick is great.
Nicely done. I like the gentle giant influence…
I knew Nick was a great drummer, but knew nothing beyond that. WOW!!
Beast.
New to modern prog rock and I only knew Nick from his singing on Neal Morse's JCTE. What a fine musician he is!
I've been a fan for years. Great great drumming, always sounding and phrasing so clearly, and on top of that phenomenal singer!
Dude what the heck. I can’t even play a song like this and he’s literally nailing it all while singing. Bro has my respect.
Nick is next level bad ass. Always has been. Please check out Spock's Beards album "Snow". You will be happy you did.
Snow is an incredible album. I also love the precision of Nick's technique, chops and pocket in spades.
Incredibly talented individual. Top guy!!
Gotta love this guy.
Singing is crucial for all musicians!
One of the world's best. Just brilliant.

I don't know how but he seems to always get better and better. I'm shocked every time I hear him play.
Nick i love this. Awesome drummer and singer
Nick is a true professional musician, by all definitions. A great role model for any drummer, for sure. Thank you Drum Channel for this!
This sweetwater sales engineer needs to be in a band !
He's in several bands. One of them is Spock's Beard, which is who this song is by. They have been around for ages and are widely regarded as one of the best modern Progressive Rock bands out there.

This is why Mr.Big choose this man, because he can play drum and have a good voice 🤘
I always thought it was crazy that SB didn't become bigger. BTW: Nick's album "Karma" is pretty great stuff, as is most of the SB CDs.
What a beast!
Yeah Nick!!
Good as it gets!
True pro; and certainly know's what he's doing.
Amazing drummer!!!
Stellar performance.
I was lucky enough to discover Nick and Spock's Beard in the late 90s, and I'm a big fan since then!! He's amazing. Look for Spocks Beard "Don't Try This at home" Live .
Incredibly good sounding kit, and very well played!
Holy fuck…. I’ve seen this guy all over the place in the UA-cam drum sphere, and I’ve never seen him play. And he’s playing some tasteful stuff *WHILE SINGING!*
Respect!
Damn dude you have a killer voice
Woah. I also drum and sing backup harmonies....but this is next level. Love Spocks Beard. Love from Ottawa 🇨🇦
Nicks the man. With all the amazing drummers on UA-cam, it was this fun and talented man who inspired me to play drums by watching him on Sweetwater drum videos. I just really liked his style. Still got it !!!
Simply amazing!! THANKS THANKS THANKS👏👏👏👏
What a beast! We want more of Nick on Drum Channel and less on Sweetwater... Extremely underrated, imo.
Mind blown. No words. That is all.
