- Testing the 2018 KTM 250XC-W TPI to see if the EFI bikes start any slower than the carbureted versions. I also ride with Brain Bentley and get his impressions on the fuel injected two stroke.

Great vids on this new machine, appreciate the honest feedback!
Good stuff, good to see comparisons. I did a ride this weekend with mine and I rode with a few guys that seemed to despise two strokes, and they were suprised when they tried out the TPI!
Yeah I was thinking this would be a good bike for people transitioning from 4 strokes.
The moral of the story is keep the battery charged and warm the bike before heading over to the line. Also, man you guys have some nice looking single track! Still rocking the "old style" frame and carb with the fluid suspension. Will be waiting for the TPis be hit the used market in a few years when its my turn to upgrade.
Nice!!! I really appreciate the testing you did. I think I might add a tpi on the buy list in the next year or two. I'm still really jealous of the terrain you get to ride. lol
My 300 XC-W TPI starts RIGHT up. Instantaneous. Just as fast as my carb'd TX300.
Enjoy your videos and real honest feed back. Will you be doing a cylinder check video at 80+ hrs? That would be fantastic!
Myles J, Thanks! This bike was a loaner from KTM so unfortunately it's now gone back to them. I know a guy with 50+ hours on his Husky TE250i with no issues.
PNW Enduro very good to know. To my knowledge the tpi system is identical?
Yep, same system and it's only going to get better as they update the mapping. Last year at Erzberg the top KTM/Husky guys had a mix of carbs and TPI bikes, this year it looks like they were all on TPI's.
PNW Enduro and as for updates on mapping we will have access to those through local dealers I’m sure? I think for 2019 the system is also the same maybe with some new map updates? Which is a good feeling for us people who have just got the first round of the tpi bikes. I was watching replays today and noticed that too. ALOT of talk about tpi bikes.
Yeah, just a simple update at the dealer. I'm sure there will be aftermarket maps available as well.
Great video. On the fence between a TPI and an Alta. Most likely a TPI 300 with a large tank and make it street legal - would make a perfect mountain exploration skoot.
Nice video great riding skills
But what about the concerns with the oil injector not supplying oil until the engine is running and the electrical systems realizes the engine is running and kicks on the oil injector. Saw that some people are giving a half kick on the kick starter to manually get the oil injector working then firing her up. People are concerned with the extreme wear on the cylinder without the oil mixed in the gas. I thought your channel mentioned to put an ounce of oil in the gas to prevent the extra wear.
DO NOT PUT OIL IN THE GAS TANK! This will gum up the injectors, thus the reason for the TPI technology. I think the oil injector would instantly be providing oil for lubrication, as with any part it's possible it could fail at some point. As for premature wear, we will have to see once people start getting 100+ hours on these bikes.
To follow up, I spoke to the Tec rep at KTM and he says there is always a little oil/gas left in the bottom of the crankcases so when the bike is fired up it is moved up to the cylinder upon first combustion providing lubrication.
With regards to a dead battery and the bike not being able to run, I bet you can disconnect the battery and bolt in a capacitor and kick start the bike like the 4-stroke KTMs (that have a kickstarter).
My husky has an SAE battery connector plug on it for using battery tenders, plugging in aux stuff to battery, etc. You could buy a small nicad battery off ebay and wire in the other end and just plug it into the bike instead of having to disconnect and reconnect stuff.
I own a tpi and love it. just started racing hare scrambles with it. what gear did you find was best for dead engine style race starts? N,1,2?
Good question I should have mentioned that. I always start in gear as the time it takes to shift after starting it can cost you a good start. We were starting in 1st with both bikes for this shootout but most of the time starting in 2nd works good for me.
What have you been doing for your starts?
I used neutral and fumbled a bit. it didn't seem to start as good in gear because the clutch drags a little. like it kind of wants to pull away when you. have the clutch in. did either of you notice that also. I still got third in my event though it makes a great endurance race bike!
We did not have any clutch drag with the bikes warmed up but I get it a bit at the start of the day when it's not warmed up. Good job on the podium finish!
Good Info!
