I have been failing at overheads for a long time now - looks like due to a combination of hitting with flat racquet and unwinding too much. Thanks for the great advice! Seeing you hit many of the same shot using the mechanics also helps :)
I hope this video help you Cliff!! Really focus on sidespin and stay facing the right net post (if right handed). Will make a huge difference. You got this, Cliff!
Great lessen again. A good overhead is very satisfying. 😂 One thing I have been wanting to change is the target. I have the tendency to hit close to the baseline, instead of the service line or closer. I'd love to get some tips on how to accomplish that. Thank you.
Hey Ryan, I would like you to post a video in the future with your game play! You have never posted a video with such content so far! I’m sure there will be a lot joy and fun for you fans to see you play with an opponent on your level! Thank you in advance and have a nice day!
I love this! I’d love to master this shot and trying during my lessons. I notice the tendency is to try to smash it hard and then it falls apart. I’ll try to take some pace maybe I’ll be successful. Thank you!
I will do these tips and should help me. Thanks. My biggest problem has been timing - swinging too early or too late. Maybe this has to with my position under ball. Pointing helps. But is there another tip you can give to make the timing better? Thanks for video.
In spite of the side spin Ryan advocates for (which would presumably result in a right to left curve like a righty slice serve) my perception is that a significant proportion of the overheads he hits actually result in left to right movement like a kick serve. Probably a result of staying sideways, as Salzenstein and others recommend for kick serve technique. Very useful video. Game recognize game.
Agree that the motion demonstrated here is more akin to the kick serve than what I would call “side spin”. You can even see the massive amount of topspin on the ball on some of the shots demonstrated.
I think his main point is not to hit it flat, but with spin instead. Doesn't really matter if it is topspin or side spin. In reality it make often be a combination of both, but it should not be something you focus on as much as the spin itself, regardless of what kind of spin it is.
Hi! Thank you for your tips. Do you watch the ball over your left arm? Some people suggests to point the ball with your left hand, but I think that facilitates too much body turn.
Sounds great! Personally, after months of playing after a hiatus of 17yrs 🤯 and missing my overheads, where I felt as if the ball suddenly arrived and was "heavy" as if a medicine ball 😂, I realized I was not seeing it well, I guess my right eye is too dominant. So I stopped turning side ways that much, for sure I still do but I'm intentional on having my upper torso lets say angled and that helped big time. Not 100% reliable and the quarterback position I think will help. Thanks for the tips!
@@2MinuteTennis Will do. For overheads, best way to train was with a wall, endless feeding, and you have to hit good overheads to have good constant feeding. Man I miss my wall, she never lost 😜
What is the ideal distance from the net for an overhead shot. Especially for women, who don't have that height advantage. I can't seem to generate that power when away from the net (closer to the service line) using the method you just showed. Should I instead let it bounce if it is not close to the net.
Just want to confirm: serve form is different that over head form? It looks like in the serve, you get your elbow pointed up and you pronate as you hit the shot vs the technique you showed here where you aim, and shoot the racket up, Roddick style
Perhaps another problem people have is that they feel that they have to knock every overhead for a winner - like bounce it so hard into the court that the ball goes over the back fence. If possible just hit the ball hard to the open court or hit a sharp angle.
Hey I have watched tons of your videos and other coaches and I just searched everywhere possible and can not find anyone do a "TOPSPIN one handed backhand overhead" instead of the slice or reaching flat backhand overhead that you primarily see by pros... Doing this came super natural to me and I can do it with just short of the same power, control and consistency as the forehand overhead (i got perfect overhead form and am really athletic genetically "gifted" mid-high lvl 4.0 at only 3 months of first playing tennis and will surely make it to 5.0 within a few years). So I don't see any reason why this isn't the optimal way to perform a one handed backhand overhead and I definitely don't see any reason to switch to the slice... Would love to hear your thoughts as I said there is 0 content I can find about the "TOPSPIN backhand overhead". (if you want I could send you a video of me doing it so you can see exactly what I am talking about/how I do it if you have never seen it). Anyways much love coach, praying on a response
Yes! Thats me!
Haha thanks Tyler. So fun. Def get on court again soon!

Thanks good tips yes i got it.
Wow, I never even noticed how the pros use Tip #2 all the time until now! Thank you very much 👍(Overhead is also one of my favorite shots to hit)
Yes!! Many players are surprised when they learn it but then watch footage of pros and then it’s obvious to them. Thanks!!
Super erklärt
Vielen Dank Coach 👍🏻
Wow 👌👌

Yes ball is watched over your left arm.
Don’t point.

Thx so much I won my match for this video
If jumping up slightly into the ball a problem?

Yes!!! No need to over hit the over head. Simply place it and that’ll be enough. Thanks!!!

Novak needs to watch this video haha
2 things l don't like to do in tennis are overhead & volley..😇😓
They aren’t easy. But don’t give up. Once you get confidence in those two shots it’ll be a game changer for you. Well worth it.
Hey, you've also got European viewers like myself...we don't care about Basketball.
:)
Not sure what you’re referencing.
Just being silly about the football quarterback reference.
Your technique of overheads is better than Novak.hah
