  • This in NO WAY changes my opinion of BD Diesel. They are a great company that makes quality parts and I highly recommend them. Sometimes stuff happens and that’s unavoidable. My 90HP injectors are currently back at BD Diesel getting tested and fixed then shipped back out to me hopefully on Monday.

I have a similar build but my truck hasn’t made it out of the shop yet. I have DDP 90 hp injectors with two problems. One won’t line up to the cross over tube and one is continuing to fuel and run the engine with the ignition off. Not happy!

One possible culprit for this sort of over-fueling in a Cummins equipped with Bosch CRIN injectors is a restricted fuel control orifice caused by a small piece of debris. The control valve assembly relies on a very small ( about 0.25mm/0.010" diameter) orifice to throttle fuel entering the valve and control the injector shut-off (EOI). If anything gets wedged into this orifice, the nozzle will stay open long after the valve has closed and the injection event should have ended. Since it's on the end of the injection event, the excess fuel doesn't completely burn in the cylinder, washing down the walls and leading to all kinds of fun.
The worst of it is you can do the job is a spotlessly a clean environment, follow the service manual chapter and verse, and if there is a single burr left over from manufacturing in a high pressure tube it can still happen. Back when I still did on-engine work, I got bit by a 5.9 job once. After I found out what happened, I made sure that every tube - always brand new ones, and always Bosch tubes - got a very thorough soak with brake cleaner and blown out multiple times with high-pressure air from both sides.
If you don't already do it, I recommend that you always flush and blow out any new high pressure tube or fuel injector line over a white paper towel before you install it. It can be enlightening/depressing how much shiny stuff can come out of a new high pressure tube.

Commenting this at 12:05.. the shut off test will not work through with a scanner, with an injector stuck open, it’s mechanically stuck, even shut off fuel will escape into the cylinder. You have to buy the special rail plug and cap the fuel rail one by one. I had this same issue with a set of 120hp injectors from exergy, had to pull the set and send them all back to be fixed, and re-flow balanced (cylinder 4 ended up having foreign debris inside the internals causing it to stick). Unfortunately it’s common. Again great content man, don’t be discouraged, welcome to the performance life lol.

How does this not change your opinion of BD diesel injectors? Sometimes stuff happens, yes, but when that "stuff" happens more to some companies than others and you still defend them, now you're just being brand loyal. It's been said many times, stick to companies that specialize in injectors. S&S, Flux, Exergy are undisputed top tier. BD is a good company, I wouldn't hesitate to buy their exhaust brake but but there's a reason why they're not in that top 3 list. Of course there's a lot to be said for good customer service as well, so maybe that makes your decision to stick with them easier. Love your channel dawg, that wouldn't change even if you bought from injectorsdirect.
