The first lyric of this song is so beautiful... While Horrible tries to convince himself that this isn't so bad after all, since he's getting into the Evil League of Evil, he knows that the girl of his dreams him is lying at his feet, forever lost to him.
Loved this ending - even though it was very sad. Very well done. This is on Hulu if you need to watch it a few times to organize thoughts and feelings.
It's quite interesting that this particular song is paced differently than all of the other songs. Which in my opinion makes it the best song as it's perfectly timed with the ending.
just try imagine my surprise. I've never seen any of this authors works before, and here was a musical starting out with jokes and exaggerated characters. I never thought it would end that way... I like it though. its brilliant. Opposing forces could never compromise, and in the end, none of them were happy.
The ending was so sad, but i loved it. i think its these unexpected endings that give Dr. Horrible such a flair. This song is amazing by the way. I love how they start chanting his name. its so cool.
@zombivamp WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN. Okay, so I'm totally going to go buy that now. Thaaank you for spreading this precious, precious knowledge.
I see Penny as being his last hope in humanity, and when he dies, he turns cold inside, and becomes the super villain he couldn't while in love with her.
Great post ZeroSwitch. Thank you. I didn't expect that kind of ending but, it fit. Makes you wonder if they do a sequel, how they will handle it. I can't imagine it would be like Buffy or Charmed where they were killed several times and always figured out a way around it.
What really cracks me up is though the last few lines of text before the song begins: - Oh no oh no.. - It's ok... It's ok Captain hammer saved me... Even in the end, he doesn't get what he wants. Well, technicaly he does, considering half the world thinks he was resoponsible for it, and therefor bad horse lets him in.
My interpretation of this song is always centered around the line "and now the nightmares real." Billy has always stated that his goal was social change, building a new society. So whose nightmare is it that Dr. Horrible is real? I believe it is Billy's nightmare. Dr. Horrible was a way for Billy to feel important in a world that didn't care about him, but now Dr. Horrible is real. Suddenly Dr. Horrible is important and respected, but Billy is still a loser in a basement.
I dont see it that way, he doesn't feel anything because the one chick he actually gave a damn about literally died in his arms and to add insult to injury she brought up the hero, and not him. So while he now has what he wants, the person he actually wanted is now dead. So his victory is hollow. Because now he's got no reason to keep going.
@@Darksky1001able Did he want her or the idea of her? He mentions drying her tears with a shiny new Australia but also recognizes that she would idolize Gandhi over bad horse. He idealized her through the series, put her life in danger and then ended up getting her killed while trying to murder her boyfriend. Dr. Horrible is who he always wanted to be, but deep down he's not a cold villain, just an every day stalker.
@Dstorm20xx No he didn't leave. The end means that under all this Dr. Horrible Stuff there is still only Billy who had archieved all he wanted but is still not happy because Penny is dead. This Evil Villain stuff is only a kind of mascerade. Thats what i understood
The greater you do, the less sequel making you should do. Onl6y thing I have ever loved that made an even more amazing sequel was space channel 5, but they quickly realized that they pushed their luck and got lucky in doing so well and didn't make a third game. Doctor Horrible, Space Channel 5, Rocky Horror Picture Show, all unique concepts that live on in my most fondest of memories, right next to my first cookie, and right before I learned I could make cookies easily at home XD
The way I interpreted the ending, I thought that "And I won't feel a thing" was part of his declaration of how Dr. Horrible would make the world "quake with fear" and all that, intended to mean he would no longer have any emotions or let feelings get in his way; however, the last words sound quite unconvincing with that blank, lonely stare, implying that in fact he does still have feelings.
Similarly, I think that it's more that he finally achieves his life's goal, what he always wanted, but at the cost of his humanity. He always blogged as Dr. Horrible, explaing how he is Dr. Horrible, what Dr. Horrible does, but at the end, he's just Billy. Billy with a sad, destroyed look on his face, explaining how he won't feel a thing.
I almost completely agree with tragic1Kingdom (I think he has not lost all has capacity for emotion--his realization that he has lost his capacity for emotion means that he still has some remnant left, however small). Whoever gave his/her post a thumbs-down doesn't understand DHSAB and shouldn't be rating posts.
i think it's a really great ending. leave it to joss to make something titled "dr. horrible's sing-a-long blog" a meaningful look into greedy obsession and being blinded by a goal. "everything you ever..." so brilliant. he got what he was obsessed with for so long but now he's lost all his capacity for human emotion.
Yeah. That sounds pretty much right. Still, It's quite unclear, and I guess we will never know :) Haha. This was a bloody good series, considering we just had this discussion about it xD
exactly, you could tell with the "kill someone? its not my style" that he said earlier from the second letter from bad horse. but once the girl of his dreams was gone, he had no more emotion and no longer cared for what his actions might cause
Dougie Howser Space Nazi vs Captain Tightpants. We love this entire series. you can't help but feel for Billy and want to slap Hammerhead around. Really makes you wonder who is truly evil - the one who wants change or the one who says "she's mine because you want her bwahahahahah!"
You could look at it that way, or you could look at it like he couldn't change HER naive innocence/compassion. She was a bit thick to the end, proclaiming "It's okay... it's okay... Captain Hammer will save us..." Really, what's sad is that they never made it to a middle ground.
Well at the end of Act 2 you notice the change. Something slips in his mind after Hammerboy has his little speech, resulting in his song "Brand new day"
I absolutely loved the ending, I couldn't help but laugh as Penny's life drained out of her in front of Billy. I guess I'm sort of a villain myself though.
The first time I saw the final scene confused me, but I here is what sense I've made of it: When Capt Hammer points the gun at Horrible, Horrible looks around and does a gesture towards the rest of the room as he says "don't". When the blast hits his chest, it seems that his chest reflects and refracts it around the room. Billy must've had armor under his coat, and knew that Hammer shooting it at him endangers everyone else. When he got up, he looked around to see that no one was hurt.
Then end of this is so heart wrenching. Dr. Horrible just wanted the bast for her. Capitan Hammer just wanted to do her and at the end she still said "Captain Hammer will save us". But there is still the end where he's back to Billy at the end so maybe he's not all evil. Or maybe I'm just over analyzing this. But if you like the series, check out the comic.
That's interesting, jontar, I never thought about it like that, particularly. I interpreted it as: he achieved his dreams, almost all he has ever wanted in life, but the high price of his victory has left it without meaning or importance. He feels none of what he thought he would have, none of the satisfaction or joy he expected. I like your interpretation better, though. It's a little happier, at least to me. But then again, I love villains, so...yeah.
@Dstorm20xx ThePowerfulThree got it spot on I think. Basically there is Dr. Horrible who is apparently pleased at all he has achieved, now the most horrific of all villians and completely feared but inside he's still Billy and he can't actually be happy because the one thing he really wanted was Penny and she's dead. For all outwards appearances though he's still Dr. Horrible of the Evil League.
All that ever held him back from going completly evil disapears though. It sorta hmm... dies. So, when that reason isn't around anymore, he goes beserk because as in the end of the last song you can hear he's gone completly apathetic, unable to feel a thing anymore.
I think the reason the Death Ray blew up is because it got damaged after Dr. Horrible got punched by Captain Hammer and was sent flying. It even looks like Dr. Horrible was trying to warn him about it too.
the death ray exploded cause it got messed up when he hit the ground after being punched by captain hammer. thats why he tried to tell him not to shoot because he saw it was unstable
I wouldn't be too sure if he's gone overhaul into complete evil. Just look at him singing the final two words "...a thing." In his personal video blog.
i hope not. i hope it has him coming to realize the horrors of his actions, and reacting to them in some way. perhaps finally getting his social reform, but having it end in a "The Dark Knight" way, in which he doesnt get to bask in the glow. seriously... if they retcon the ending with some kind of "Time Machine" Thing, i'll be seriously pissed. if it was all in his head, i'll appreciate it, but if we're to take the last frame as him regretting his actions, it'll be lame to bring her back.
yeah, and you have to remember that most plays were tragedies back in the day, like Romeo and Juliet, for example. sad endings are what make good stories.
Probably. But there is still the theory that she actually really wants billy more. "This is perfect for me, so they say I guess he's pretty ok After years of stormy sailing Have I finally found a bay?" She sings this whilst looking kind of sad towards the door, sorta like she's waiting for billy to show up. It is quite clear that she likes billy in some sense at least. I don't know if she really is trying to cling on to the illusion though. She is dieing and therefor dellerious. Hard to know
What i think the message behind this was, He got the world he wanted because he's a bad guy, but at what cost? He lost his "love" and he has no one to share his life with now. Yes he's a good guy in general, when he makes the kids comment, But he's still a super villain. He's what you would call a tragic hero...
i thought it was that he was either imaging it, or eh did it but just gave up because he felt it wasnt worth it, thats why hes wearing civilian clothes rather than his evil outfit

i'd agree...he doesnt know the gun is now broken, he just doesnt want cpt hammer to kill him and send him to st peters....or whoever's job that is but in hell.
@lawlzerskates She was holding onto one man, who happened to be a jackass, but nevertheless. In her quest of helping everybody around she needed a strong shoulder, but she never was "into" him. That last line was not said with heart, but with abandon.
@lawlzerskates She was in a guy who was there, Billy just wasn't and, instead of just trying to be near her like any normal human being would do, he turned it all upside down and it all ended bad. If he tried just talking, she might've stayed with him.
The first lyric of this song is so beautiful... While Horrible tries to convince himself that this isn't so bad after all, since he's getting into the Evil League of Evil, he knows that the girl of his dreams him is lying at his feet, forever lost to him.
It breaks me every time I hear those last two words, "...a thing."
its from the letter he was reading "does she even know who you are ? and are you even. ...." then at the end he finishes the letter "a thing"
And it breaks me that we can't watch the damn movie on UA-cam anymore.
i listened to this recording over and over when it was so new, glad to see it's still on youtube
Just jaw droppingly good. I laughed my way through the first 2 acts and cried like a baby when this song stated. My favourite. Can't wait for the DVD.
Josh,as always.. Crushes you in th end of one of his almost flawless stories. Firefly still one of my fav shows. I will buy this on dvd for sure.
OMG, right? Those two and "Man's Gotta Do" are my three favs. I'm gonna force my mom to buy teh dvd~!
Loved this ending - even though it was very sad. Very well done. This is on Hulu if you need to watch it a few times to organize thoughts and feelings.

I love the "Everything you ever..." that plays throughout the song.
Oh that was ... Brilliant.
Thank you for these, all of these. I cant wait for the DVD release.
I agree completely...
He's just so sad, you can't help but want to hug him.
The ending was so sad, but i loved it.
i think its these unexpected endings that give Dr. Horrible such a flair. This song is amazing by the way. I love how they start chanting his name. its so cool.
@zombivamp
WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN.
Okay, so I'm totally going to go buy that now. Thaaank you for spreading this precious, precious knowledge.
This song is so awesome, it gives me chills
I see Penny as being his last hope in humanity, and when he dies, he turns cold inside, and becomes the super villain he couldn't while in love with her.
the part where it gets all silent at the end and dr.h just says: "a thing" is such a powerful ending, I love it.
I'm almost weeping. This is strangely powerful. I love how 'Brand New Day' kicks in...Too amazing.
Aww. Next time I have iTunes credit, I wanna buy this series. I love it.
this and a brand new day are my favorites, i like brandnew day cuz it really shows some evil in him
Great post ZeroSwitch. Thank you. I didn't expect that kind of ending but, it fit. Makes you wonder if they do a sequel, how they will handle it. I can't imagine it would be like Buffy or Charmed where they were killed several times and always figured out a way around it.
Yea that's one of my favorite parts about this song.
I love this song Its my fave really sad, but I still love it.

ironic that you can hear a part of Brand New Day. I almost cried when Penny died. seriously

Joss says they're working on that. And they plan to have the DVD to be Zone Zero!
i know, right. that part, yet short, was pretty raw

BAD HORSE IS A HORSE!!! OMG that was hilarious!! but, very very sad...

Listen to the song before it, Slipping. The line, "Then I will get everything I ever..." comes up in it.
It's so dramatic how he cuts off after saying "a thing". It makes me want to cry
Same. Beautiful...
I like that in the background the female singers are saying, "Everything you ever..." I think it sounds pretty.

Reminds me of the old Underworld Unleashed story that DC did about a decade ago. The one with Blue Devil.
also, I'd never give money to Apple, so until the dvd comes out this is the only way I'll be able to watch it
I absolutely loved the ending, I couldn't help but laugh as Penny's life drained out of her in front of Billy.
I guess I'm sort of a villain myself though.
I Love NPH. I want the DvD so bad. I hope they come out in Canada.
I Agree With Caesor.Even Though It's Sad,Imagine Penny Living Still Going Out With Capt.Hammer? It's Like This Invasion Had No Effect.
The first time I saw the final scene confused me, but I here is what sense I've made of it:

That's what he said? I never noticed. Wow. That just makes it cooler.
Bad Horse needs his own show. On TV. In movies. His face on lunchboxes. All over the world.
I wish people wouldn't make a sequel. It was so perfectly tragic as it is. T_T
The whole thing is tied to the last 2 secs of the film with the look on Dr. Horrible's face.
Then end of this is so heart wrenching. Dr. Horrible just wanted the bast for her. Capitan Hammer just wanted to do her and at the end she still said "Captain Hammer will save us". When he and the gun are sliding across the floor after he got decked, you can see electrical shorts all over the gun from the damage.

It was a really effective ending for something that was supposed to be a light-hearted comedy.
superb. thx for posting. could you put the whole scene here plz ?
yeah, and you have to remember that most plays were tragedies back in the day, like Romeo and Juliet, for example. sad endings are what make good stories.
Now DR horrible is HERE!
Probably. But there is still the theory that she actually really wants billy more. "This is perfect for me, so they say
I guess he's pretty ok
After years of stormy sailing
Have I finally found a bay?"
She sings this whilst looking kind of sad towards the door, sorta like she's waiting for billy to show up. It is quite clear that she likes billy in some sense at least. I don't know if she really is trying to cling on to the illusion though. She is dieing and therefor dellerious. Hard to know
If in sequel will not be Felicia i will never watch it! This song... and ending... great...
or maybe, he imagined all of that and it flashed to reality at the last second as he plans it all out!
What i think the message behind this was, He got the world he wanted because he's a bad guy, but at what cost? He lost his "love" and he has no one to share his life with now. damn, lovin this
I think so too, but that ending just bugged me and I'd love to see a follow up. The whole part where it goes to him in a hoodie saying "a thing" just sets me off I don't know why.
Here lies everything / The world I wanted at my feet / My victory's complete / So hail to the king
(everything you ever)
Arise and see
So your world's benign / So you think justice has a voice / And we all have a choice / Well, now your world is mine
(everything you ever)
And I am fine
Now the nightmare's real / Now Dr. Horrible is here / To make you quake with fear/ To make the whole world kneel
(everything you ever)
And I won't feel...
...a thing
You can purchase songs without the lyrics. We did it all the time when we did plays/musicals. There is a process or specific place you can go to.
I just wish I could remember how to get it done. Good luck.
I think that when he realized that the girl of his dreams died so did his humanity and became apathetic, Dr Horrible basically has become the villian he always wanted and he doesnt feel "a thing' for people anymore
"...And, I won't feel A Thing." To show that as Dr. Horrible - he gets what he wants but, as a person - he lost the only thing he ever wanted.
he got what he was striving to get but now he "does not feel a thing" because he got at at a price, penny's death
Why did they take down the original?
Actually, from 1:31 to 1:48 it is the Brand New Day chorus tune, but just with a sadder tone, while in Brand New Day it was more angry.
thats why the metaphor is in there.
I think all the journalists snapping pictures and saying "Dr. Horrible! Dr. Horrible!" really made his personality snap. He wasn't Billy anymore, to the world, he was Dr. Horrible. Now and forever. He locked up Billy and his emotions where Dr. Horrible used to be, in the blog. That's why Billy seemed so forelorn and heart-wrenched at the end, and Dr. Horrible was so apathetic to Penny's death, perhaps even happy.
In my mind, that is the best part of the song
He would probably given up everything for Penny. He did not get everything he wanted.
SerenityRox99: He is not an empty shell feeling no emotions. He says that, but if you see the last bit of the third act, you can see that he does feel something.
i'd agree...he doesnt know the gun is now broken, he just doesnt want cpt hammer to kill him and send him to st peters....or whoever's job that is but in hell.
Actually, it reminded me of Tara's end from BtVS so it wasn't really a surprise for me. More like a "Well, daaaamn" moment.
@lawlzerskates She was holding onto one man, who happened to be a jackass, but nevertheless. In her quest of helping everybody around she needed a strong shoulder, but she never was "into" him. That last line was not said with heart, but with abandon.
poor Penny, her dying at the end was soo unexpected.
He Is Actually Trying To Forget Penny Now That He's At A New Stage Of Evil Because He Finally Lived A Dream.
WHAT A CRAZY RANDOMHAPPENSTANCE!!!
It wouldnt be doctor horrible without Neil.
I would appreciate if the Evil league of evil application/interview winners made appearances as well.
Me and my girlfriend were brokenhearted at it. Poor Penny. We should have seen it coming, but it caught us both off guard.
This is such a sad song. =( tear.
i wonder if they purposely made thirteen songs for this series beacause it looks good to end with this "jugdement day" song last.
@lawlzerskates She was in a guy who was there, Billy just wasn't and, instead of just trying to be near her like any normal human being would do, he turned it all upside down and it all ended bad. If he tried just talking, she might've stayed with him.
