2019 Kia Optima - Review & Road Test

- Kia's been making some noteworthy products of late with the sporty Stinger and the compact Forte. The Optima wants some of that good attention, so the folks at Kia made some nice additions to the middle child of their sedan lineup. Check them out with Kelley Blue Book's Lyn Woodward.

It's nice to see Hyundai/Kia still consistently making sedans Nice review
I have the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid Ex W/ Technology package and I love it. Drove 4 hours to Los Angeles California to buy it. Kia is awesome! I would of never said that 10 years ago.
whats your mpg?
I average about 46 miles per gallon, sometimes more, I live about 5 hours away from Las Vegas, about 340 miles away. Ill leave my house on a full tank and still have just over half a tank when I get there.
Tech package does that mean it had bluetooth an stuff. How much did you pay for it and is it worth it?
@@bostonfan2974 Bluetooth is standard
I do respect you guys try to fit as much info as possible in a short time....rather than boring people with unecessary info..and you are really good at it..but there are things you can add which is important for users like me...
- safety comparison within segment
- low beam headlights in trims ..I use Camry SE ..they sucks ..and risky when you drive on freeways on night..
- cabin noise at 70 on freeways
- door closing sound..
You guys are doing good..will appreciate if you include these !!
A unique tidbit. The Optima SX has the power steering motor mounted on the rach for more accurate and less laggy steering. One other point, the intercooler is mounted below the 5 mph slow speed crash point to mitigate damage to expensive critical components. Finally, the passenger compartment swaddles you in high tensile strength light weight steel. I would submit with rebates/customer cash the SX is a bargain.
Panoramic sunroof.... awesome'est option. Loving my Kia!
After enjoying 3 Honda Accords, I finally switched to a Plug-In Hybrid Kia Optima EX Premium 2020. In the first month, I managed 2,8 litres/100 km in fuel economy. In fact, in my day-to-day commuting (20 km), I only use the EV mode. The gas engine comes on idling as a generator only when the heater/AC or the defrosting is demanding, (or after about 40 km of EV driving) and then it's also silky-smooth with its 6-speed automatic transmission (gladly not a CVT!). Otherwise, I REALLY enjoy the complete silence and the torquey accelerations of the electric motor on green lights. I plug it every night and I wake up to a fresh new battery every morning. I always have about 900 km extra autonomy on gas, but I mainly drive it in electric mode. The ride is extremely smooth and quiet. The interior is very roomy and comfortable. The chassis feels very solid and high-quality. Steering is precise. The equipment is complete, from the panoramic moonroof, heated leather steering wheel, heated and cooled leather seats with 10 electric adjustments, to all the programmable driving aids like intelligent Cruise-Control, Lane-Maintaining Assist, 360⁰ cameras, 2-zone AC, 10-speakers Harman-Kardon sound system, Apple CarPlay, automatic rain-detecting wipers, self-dimming road lights, LED lighting all around including new foglights, etc. The addition of a big battery behind the backseat spreads the weight over the long wheelbase, so they beefed-up the rear suspension and the ride feels very well balanced and composed. It's not a sports car but, thanks to the newly-revised dampers and links, it rides like an expensive european sedan on any type of pavement. The only fault is the size of the trunk, which will not allow many big suitcases like regular sedans do. Built in South Korea, the Plug-In Hybrid Kia shows perfect fit and finish. I'm really impressed!
This car also comes with adaptive full LED headlights with led fog lights. And that is a feature that is not typically found on cars in this price segment. Plus Navigation is included and a good harmon kardon audio system. Heated steering, seats and ventilated as wel are all standard on the sx. Also an auto dimming rear view mirror, heated side mirrors with blind spot monitoring.
Just traded out of a 2013 Optima LX.Over 120000 miles and the only stops were for oil changes.Great car.Almost 40 mpg on the highway and high 20s local.
Really? I thought I heard there was an engine recall for 2011-2015 models.
@@ItsLuwee Mine was checked under the recall and did not need an engine. Was nice. They did the oil change for free at that time.
Thanks for posting on a holiday! 😆

just bought this car with panoramic sunroof s model in gray. it doesn't have that unreliable cvt transmission like most new cars have and i got the 10 year 100k optional bumper to bumper with it. it's an amazing car with an amazing warranty i'm happy
Congratulations I also bought a gray optima s 2.4 gdi yesterday I did get the additional insurance from all state read threw the contract how to file claims you have to keep scheduled maintenance on vehicle from certified mechanics they approve and only cover if all up keeps have been met to there guidelines and only cover certain dollar amounts plus dealers bumper to bumper is 5 so your paying for 10 when 5 is already covered threw dealer. Tires can't be worn past 2"/"32 tread oil change airfilter replacements vehicle inspections tire rotation trans flush and on all have to have been done to keep warranty you miss anything and don't follow owners maintenance schedule you for fit warranty. We are going to cancel ours cost us 3800 dollars more for bs that only covers 2 inch scratch 60 tire repairs one time. Ect. Just read it you have 60 days from purchase date to cancel with 100% reimbursement. It doesn't cover anything over petty low cost fixes which dealers cover for 5 years 60000 miles. Plus you save interest on that extended warranty if u don't have it as well
yeah i'm gonna keep my extra warranty that i bought through the dealer. I have terrible luck with cars breaking down and i live in a big city where you need to drive your car a little harder to get where you need to go. so I need that peace of mind. How much is your full coverage? i pay 154 through geico and have an accident on my record.
Hi dear, are you still happy customer after two years ?
Amazing how they are able to work pricing on these, this one costs less than my 2014 SXT but mine has the premium and technology packages so maybe thats the difference in price. The next gen Optimas and Sonata's look to be amazing and have impressive technology like parking assist and performance packages. Can't wait to see those!
I have a 2011 Kia optima ...
.best car and car company I have EVER had.....and I'm 67 years old
Really? I thought I heard there was an engine recall for 2011-2015 models.
i love the red and black interior
Kia is the hidden gem of the car industry right now
Still looks good in my opinion
The best looking Kia IMO. And what a great color combo of white with black and red. That’s a lot of car for $30k.
golfbuddy1969 have you owned a Kia?
White Mail Privilege nope. I generally don’t like them.
Jesus is Fake - to me, some (not all) of their designs look like they borrow from other manufacturers...head lights from this company, profile form that company, exhaust pipes from here, and tail lights form there. So it isn’t always cohesive to my eye. Honestly, I don’t care for the new Telluride, or the Stinger.
Bought this car a month ago and I'm loving it feels luxurious inside
You probably should have waited a couple months for 2 reasons. 1, this car will HUGE rebates by the end of summer. And 2, you will be quite disappointed when you see the all new Optima in a couple months.
@@johnnydwyer4261 yeah the new optima(k5) looks nice, but I’m 18 and I don’t have that much money. With the money I’ve saved from working I’ll probably just get this optima or maybe a Honda Civic, not really sure at the moment.
I love her outfit, looks very comfy!!
Howdy, great review! Did you know that Micah’s mom has an Optima?😻😸
This car was the talk of the town in 2011, now it sorta went off the radar
Brian Rosado Same with the Sonata.
Whole segment down in toilet as sheeple have followed everybody into crossovers.
@@ATRichard nah the sonata has stayed talk.of the town especially with the upcoming 2020 Sonata the optima hype died after 2013
Chris Peoples Fair, the 2020 has generated some new buzz. Even when the Sonata streamlined its design for 2015, people still talked about it some. I prefer the Optima personally between the two. But we’ll see what Optima’s redesign looks like and if they offer AWD.
@@ATRichard it'll be hard to top the 2020 sonata inside and out. Hyundai is completely revamping to the point it seems like they're the better option over their sister company Kia which means Kia has to step a whole level above to continue to be the one most will ick over Hyundai
I like that it went back to the 2015 design
I like the way this Kia Optima looks a lot. Great value car that will out last the Nissan Altima and mazda mazda 6.
Great Job Kia but it’s time for a new model esp when we have seen the new Sonata in the works
Pretty sure it the grill will go bigger to the ground like the competition
Happy Memorial Day KBB !!!!
It's scheduled to launch in december, in Korea. With 2.5T GT model and AWDs. Maybe 2020 Q2 in US?
I have a 2018 optima wagon 1.7 crdi I love it
Best car in the segment, as always.
hello, does the head rest on the 2018-2019 Kia Optima tilt forward & backward? (not just up and down like the older models)? thanks for any help
Beautiful!! I like the car too!
Mike Williams #thirsty
YEEESSS, literally just bought it 😎👌
Waiting for KBBs review of the Telluride. I think Micah and his family absconded with it.
😎
Yes, I said “absconded”...
I’ve seen a few Telluride’s around my city and they are so nice!!!!!
Myself and my wife had a 2012 optima Hybrid. We drove over 6000kms across Canada and the car only went through 429 bucks.
Traded the car for more room in a Nissan rogue. After three years she is going back to kia with a new optima. Non hybrid though, we need more truck room.
Nice video, I just wish there wasn't adjustments to the colour grading. It makes lines look more prominent and blacks darker, whites whiter. I want to see the vehicle as it is in person, not how good it can look with editing. I hope this criticism isn't misunderstood. Appreciate the video!
My wife has a 2013 Optima, bought it new. Gets great mileage up to 41 mpg at 80 mph. Only complaint I have is ground clearance and I'm 5'11 and the roof seems a tad low getting in and out for me.
Really? I thought I heard there was an engine recall for 2011-2015 models.
Shopping for this exact car today...can't seem to find any!!!

The fart noise made me laugh so much
This car is a bargain!
Tully3674 Agreed!

Such nice road surfaces, which, in SoCal could only mean one thing, this was filmed in Irvine~
They're focused in Orange county
Hyundai/Kia/Genesis are about to go to the next level. Their reliability is right on par (or dare I say it even better than Toyota). The Kia Telluride, Genesis GV80 (coming soon) and the Hyundai Palisade (coming soon) are gonna be the real hot sellers. Genesis the brand that everyone is sleeping on. They are gonna get more dealerships. All three brands do not have a weak link at all. All of their products are strong sellers. All three brands are still missing two big segments. Trucks (midsize and full size) and a two door sports coupe (think the old Hyundai Tiburon) I would like to see the Hyundai Entourage minivan come back with a new version. Kia still has the Sedona. Hopefully, Kia Stonic (the twin of the Hyundai Kona) will finally come to the U.S. Hyundai is also getting its own version of the Kia Soul called the Venue. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis are no longer a laughing stock. They pushing envelope. I would say this even if I didn't own two Hyundais.
Charles allen jr no, their reliability isn’t that great. Toyota and Lexus will be number 1 no matter what.
Wow awesome review
2020 kia optima launch !!

Seems like you guys do an Optima review once per month.
Apologies for the silly question, but does anyone notice a slight "wiggly/loose" feel to the touch on the 2019 Sx Paddle Shifters right before fully pressing the Paddle down? Is this normal or is it something that needs to be fixed/addressed? (granted they are obviously not of bmw quality etc) Any help is greatly appreciated!
Mid cycle refresh=change the head lights and tail lights.
Does it have auto start?
This Hyundai Sonata looks good... cute like a KIA Forte.
Lmao her response about the turbo lag lol
ambient lighting
Just to let everyone know there is a Limited package that is added on the SX trim I don’t know why don’t just have a SXL trim by itself like what they did on the 2011-2018 versions
I test drove a 2016 SXL and my mind was blown at how nice it was. Drove great, plenty of power, and the interior was just gorgeous.
Good Review 👍
I really dig that sweater.
Oh that sweater tho.
Decent value.
Can this bumper fit optima Fe
The design still looks good for those claiming it needs a total redesign. This car offers more for the money than the Camry or Accord. Honda should go back to the design room for the Accord. You WON’T get leather seats on the Camry. I own the Stinger GT2 and love it, though this Optima SX is a great car.
You do get leather seats on the Camry
Iboy Dafreshest I owned one for a day and took it back...it has synthetic leather. They’re not bad, just not leather.
Def like the Optima over the Sonata, but there hasn't been a huge change to the body style since the updated 2011 model, especially when the Sonata gets a new body style like every 2 minutes.
The new gen Kia Optima should be ready for the 2021 Model year.
I have the 18 SX. There are maybe 7 differences between 18 & 19 SX. Same car otherwise. Can’t wait for the 20 because I will be trading in
Go for the 2021 redesigned Optima. It looks good.
Charles allen jr Correct. Crashed my 18. Got the 20. Might trade up
Okay I rented 2 Kia Optimas and the white one got really bad hail damage to where the car is totaled but none of the windshields broke out not a scratch .🤗 but the body of the car got alot of hail damaged from the storm. 😏🤨
Cute, and the car too.
Here in Europe we get this with 7 Speed DCT (dualclutch)There is no 6 speed auto available🤔
Lol that's good.
MPG?
problem is that it eat to much fuel & low rpm in 6 gear it stop at 4k rpm ...
Yet another auto review that fails to recognize the Mazda 6 as midsize competition. The highly competent Mazda doesn't deserve that, and this is one large reason that they don't sell better. Of course, Mazda marketing or lack there of doesn't do it justice either though. Imho, the Mazda 6 Signature is the most aesthetically pleasing both in exterior and interior design and the overall best in this highly competitive class by far. Otherwise, outstanding review of the Kia Optima, which is a fantastic car in it's own right.
Turbo lag no thanks I go. With the stinger
Ok so, i got this as my rental car back when i was driving a round trip (Tucson --> Phoenix --> Tucson) in Arizona. It was a hot day between 105F to 107F. Everything was fine going to Phoenix, but on my drive on Hwy 10 heading back to Tucson via the fastest lane on very left lane at cruise speed of 77mph. Suddenly, the "check engine" light came on, the car's engine had a weird noise, my cruise speed program automatically got cancelled, speed just start to drop fast (on the FAST LANE!). So decided to maneuver over to the slow lane at the very right, I pressed the accelerator but all the way in to the floor, but the engine stayed at a certain rev-sound, and could only max at 60mph. I couldn't figure out what was going on, but i pressed on at 60mph all the way back to Tucson with 30 miles to go. Now, i travel a lot in and around the US, I've used all kinds of rental car brands (Toyota being the best), and I have never experienced this sort of problem driving on highways. Yet a 2019 optima....i just never had any sort of engine problems with brand new cars, except with this car. I knew then, that if i'm going to get a new car, KIA is OUT of my list of brands. Can anybody explain to me what was going on?
Nice kia and hyundai.
Take it to a highway with a little rough surface like most roads in USA It has a lot of road noise. Kia and Hyundai will teach you a good lesson not to select cars based on looks.
Last model to receive the new Kia magic touch.
What's going on with the contrast in this vid?
Ugh should have waited for this one I have the “18 LX
Same. I really like it, quiet ride, good mpg, roomy, surprisingly stable in snow and nice safety features. That said, I did put the larger alloy wheels on it and a new speaker system
@@itsmini6175 I agree! However , I’m kinda looking forward to upgrading already . I’m so indecisive with cars
A redesign is way over due
Nah, but one is coming soon
@@jaredshelton4718 I'm guessing it'll be here next year, as a 2021 model.
@@th83 2020 model is coming
@@jaredshelton4718 The Optima is currently a year behind the Sonata's schedule, so I'm guessing we won't see it until 2020 for the 2021 MY.
@@th83 I wouldn't say it's a year behind. It's sort of like the Telluride Palisade situation. We have a Telluride but no Palisade right now, even though they're the same chassis. But you might actually be right considering they haven't even released the design for the new Optima yet x_x
I use to work at a Kia dealer. Optimas are stupid nice for the price and I can't say I saw them in for warranty work all that often.
Really? Were there many engine recalls for all of the KIA models?
Great video. But not a fan of the colors in the video.
Passenger seats back here are “Bbbbgood”
I rented a 2019 Optima LX when I was in Florida a couple of months ago. The most basic Optima is a surprisingly good midsized sedan. I'd consider getting one, but not as long as other Kias continue to have failing Theta II engines, and other Kias such as the Soul burst into flames.
Really? Did it have a lot of power?
Sticking with the fake fender vent is see. Nice Kia!
I have 2 Optima's, a 2014 SX that I bought new and a 2017 LX that I bought new. My 2014 SX has 23k miles on it, my 2017 LX has 42k miles. I love them both but my SX has more of that SPORTY feel to it when I drive it. It is not a turbo so it has the 2.4 and is very quick. Also i think i like the grill more on the 2014 as it has more aggressive look to it. SX is black LX is dark grey. My son has a 2018 S. KIA has come a long way. I will eventually trade in my 2017 LX but the 2014 SX is a keeper.
Really? I thought I heard there was an engine recall for 2011-2015 models.
why did this review come out so late? i bought my 2019 back in december. 😂
Do u love it? Might get one today
Great car
Definitely needs a outside refresh
Ws Duce That is the outside refresh. Next will be an all new model like the Sonata.
Yep. It's pretty full just like Malibu
Honestly, I really like this model tbh, something about just rubs me the right way, not to mention the price point compared with its rivals 👍👌.
Bought the 2011 LX...fine... Next our 2012EX... better! Now a 2017 SXL loaded...OK maybe we're done for a bit! If I can give up the Aubergine Nappa leather!!

I thought all trims had emergency braking assist she saying only ex and above?
@@SevEndV Really? Which model do you own?
So pretty ❤
The 2011 six turbo had 270 hp,why the decrease in hp.
It's a decrease in power, but not on performance.
I wanna see a 2.0l turbo fwd opting drag race a 2.0l turbo rwd stinger lol
You forgot the Mazda 6 as usual
maybe because mazda's count is not significant in USA, compared to other Japanese and now Korean sedans.
waltervila33 because the Mazda 6 is basically a more expensive Mazda 3. There’s no point in getting a 6 when the 3 is the god of Mazda sedans.
I just traded my 13 Optima for a new Mazda 6.Great car but slightly smaller than the Optima. If it holds up as well as the Optima I will be very pleased

I love how people are still asleep on Kia. Nothing like making toast on the regular at the stoplight with my ‘16 SXL-T Sorento AWD.
Absolutely love Kia’s but for the price I may as well get a Tesla
The color interior is off, the should have made it all red. I have driven the base Kia Optima though, and I actually rather it than the base accord. The accord exterior looks better, but the Camry looks the best.
Kia and sonata came a long way. I use say dam they ugly. Now I'm very impressive that both company did not gave up. Both car look more sporty and better. Its a neck breaker for sure.

2013 best year! And why are we seeing more of her than actually the car? Tf
how the fuck are LED taillights not standard yet?
Wow cool it still looks like the 2011 lol. 8 years and they just changed the headlights and taillights. Wonder why it’s garbage. Look at Toyota Honda and Nissan. They been killing it. Even the sonata got changed.
Uh, the car is completely different both inside and outside, so good job at being obtuse. That is the very reason that toyota and honda do well unfortunately. Too many of their buyers don't know a damn thing about anything.
