I was getting my daily wearing tigers on Amazon for the longest time. If I had known this in 2023 my last pair would not have been work shoes that I am now trying to replace. So super bummed & really hoping their bougie campaign doesn't work bc these shoes were my bougie. Hoping they find a new distributor in the US sooner than later. 😔
Yeah I bought two pair before they quit shipping last year. And I bought a pair this week....but damn. This is a one time deal tbh. 'cause I love Japan. I think it'd be cheaper if I just buy the next pair when I'm over there this summer. lol
Hello friend, I'm from Brazil, and Onitsuka Tiger's operations here have been suspended for a long time. I agree with some of the points you made in the video, but I have a few more to add. The strategy of focusing on high fashion makes sense. They are purposefully promoting a shortage of Mexico 66s, knowing that demand for them is very high, due to the Tik Tok audience, for example. Just like this audience has made Adidas Sambas more expensive. But I would like to add something: I have never held an Onitsuka Tiger Made in Japan in my hands, but from watching videos, it seems to be of premium quality. Perhaps, to cater to this high fashion audience, they need to centralize their products to Made in Japan, since it seems to me to be almost artisanal production, with leather and premium materials. One thing is certain, as I said in the video, it has always been expensive, but the expectation is that it will become even more so.
The writing was on the wall last year and earlier. One time I sorted from $$$ to $. BRUH. There were some shoes on top that were absurd in pributon top of design. Rich ppl have no taste.
Retail price isn't going up and its always been a somewhat higher brand vs asics regular line. That being said, there is plenty of hype for onitsukal they are availiable for retail everywhere except the usa for some reason.
😂 thats funny. Thinking US is the buggest market in the world. Onitsuka is popular. And leaving US market has nothing to do with them not being popular anymore. They just move to countries that has people with buying power. 🙂

Its crazy how expensive they are. I read somewhere that the brand is trying to reposition itself as a high fashion and luxury aesthetic shoe line. Can anyone confirm that they were cheaper in the past or more accessible?
Can confirm. I used to buy their serrano and mexico66 line a decade ago, it was around $90-100 back then, nowadays they jacked up and doubled the price. Aint buying a sneaker at that price range, $200-300 is already full grain leather boots territory.
In fact they were MUCH cheaper a couple years ago. They arrived in Brazil and stayed for a bit before leaving permanently. Prices range between 30-100 USD, converting from Brazilian Reais.
They repositioned their strategy to focus on countries that can spend their money. Thats why they are open all over Asia. So just face it.. US is not the biggest market in the world.

It seems as though Onitsuka Tiger pulled out of South Africa too. The prices are crazy online.

Very good point. I agree that if they would want to become a more lux brand it would make sense to have the shoes be made in Japan for sure.

Probably sales, if the brand was popular it wouldn't have left one of the biggest market in the world...

plenty of Tigers in Thailand, and Asia
Worn these shoes for the past 15 years. Don't care about price. But they don't even make them past size US 11.5 anymore. Outrageous.
I recently purchased two pairs (gore tex and 66 SD models), sized 11.5, last month.

15 years ago I used to get them for 65 bucks. They were my favorite summer kicks. Ultimate 81s
