  • How did The Beatles go from being The Quarrymen, started by John Lennon in 1956, to becoming The Beatles by August 1960?
In this new series, we look at John Lennon's first lineup of The Quarrymen in 1956, with Pete Shotton, Bill Smith, Eric Griffiths, Rod Davis, Colin Hanton, and Len Garry to them heading to Hamburg as The Beatles.
We will look at Paul McCartney joining The Quarrymen in July 1957, and then Paul introducing George Harrison to John when The Quarrymen had the three future Beatles in the group.
There were many personnel changes, group names, failed auditions, break-ups and so much more, to George re-forming the Quarrymen with John, Paul, and Ken Brown to open the Casbah in August 1959.
After Stuart Sutcliffe joined, The Quarrymen name was then dropped in favour of Beatals, Silver Beatles, Silver Beetles, The Beetles, and eventually The Beatles before they headed to Hamburg in August 1960, having had several drummers, like Tommy Moore and Norman Chapman, before Pete Best joins The Beatles.

Fascinating. It does seem that Paul was always a motivating force to advance the band, and that George and Paul were the better musicians from the beginning, with John being more of a vocal front man and personality.

John was not even a guitar player when he and Paul met, so he was always behind Paul and George.
However, I think that John became a fantastic rhythm guitarist and is often overlooked. But early on, he was definitely playing catch-up!

There's also the late Chas Newby, who filled in for Stuart Sutcliffe for four gigs in December 1960 when the band returned to Liverpool while Sutcliffe remained in Hamburg. When the band then came back to Hamburg in January 1961, Newby decided to quit to resume university studies, and Sutcliffe briefly rejoined the band from then until announcing his second and final departure that July, after which Paul McCartney took on bass duties himself.

It's so amazing that the Beatles even happened. So many things had to fall into place and did. It would have been understandable if John, Paul or George had quit the music business up until 1960 and started at a regular job. There was pressure on them to put the music behind them and get serious about life, but of course they never did. Luckily. The Beatles were the first generation of Englishman to not have to serve in the military too, can you imagine if that had happened?

I saw an interview with John's half sister.. Where she mentioned at the time of johnny and the moondogs that there was fir a short while johnny and the rainbows.. And yet no beatles historians ever mention the rainbows.. The moondogs gets occasional mention but never the rainbows.. Why is that?

Hello thanks for the interest shown, all the Histories of the Beatles sort of satrt with the Beatles and other well nknown groups suddenly appear playing at a place called the Cavern at the time lots of groups of lads got togetether to play Guitars and all or most Catholic Churches ran youth Clubs for the local Teenagers so a lot of these lads started trying to get bookings at these Clubs Basically thinking they were imitating Elvis Presley, all the Pubs booked somne of these groups for Saturday Night so all these lads were you might say serving an apprenticeship some became better known and hadmore bookings so some started to think of becoming professiuonal.some groups at the time were far more well known than the Beatles Shane Fenton and the Fentones were i think the most well known he became Alvin Stardust Later the Beatles also played at the Hamblton hhall in Page Moss about a mile from St Dominicks Church so i would think the Beatles played at a lot of these Church Clubs around Liverpool i`m sure out of all the interest in these Church Clubs somebody thought of the idea of opening Clubs in the Citry Centre and that started it all off.
