  • Have you ever thought to order 1/4 of a cow? We had no idea how much meat we would be getting. I was surprised by how much meat the butcher brought out to us. Have you ever ordered a 1/4 of a cow or even more?

    I just got my third order today... I have been very pleased.. Depending on the weigh is how of a quater you get all three orders have been different in size.. I personally do not like the butcher paper and went with another butcher that provides more cuts and vacuum seal.. My family and friends taster the difference from buying you own rather then store.. So so good..

    When you buy a quarter you need to get either a front or a back quarter. The front has more roasts, the back more steaks. If you want some of each ask if you can do a half of a half.

    Just purchased 1/2 a grass-fed angus. Over 750# of delightfully double wrapped and cut to my specs! Filled two freezers over 1/2 each!

    Was given two perfectly gd cattle beast recently. Both heifers of just under 3 years old. We had to butcher one immediately. Both live weights were around 600kgs each. So we have sooo much meat. The second cattle beast we won’t be able to kill for a year.
    I think it’s awesome what you did. You learn and next time you can adjust, it’s all a great experience.

    I just split 1/2 a cow with a friend. It's a local family farm that provides Grass Fed beef. The total weight for 1/2 a cow was 267 lbs split in half. We each got 39 lbs of 1 lb ground beef packages and split 9 prime rib steaks and 9 T-bones. Several roasts, along with tallow, ribs, a brisket (split) organs (tongue, heart, liver) and soup bones. It was all already cryo-vac packed and frozen. Ours was $ 5.50/lb, but it was grass fed. I have a 7 cu ft chest freezer and its about 2/3 full. I'll probably get a 1/2 cow by myself next time.

    I always purchase ½ steer of meat from a good friend who has a farm in AL. Just picked up our beef yesterday and it broke down to about $4.51 per pound which includes the butcher fees. I believe her cows are Dexter breed, if that matters. Everything was shrink-wrapped in plastic instead of paper-wrapped, so maybe that's why it cost so much per pound 🤷🏼‍♀️

      Actually $4:50 is the going rate .. which considering how much crappie hambuger at store is $4:00 a lbs..I think you did good.. I got mine at $4:00 a lbs..for a 1/4 which should arrive 3-16 ..the other beef he sold to for $4;50#,, I will also say my hambuger is about 97% lean..

      I was never offered any of these extras. I just figured since I was only getting a 1/4 someone was getting them.

    We do a whole every year. We got 792 lbs of beef last April. When we figured it out we paid $3/lb for prime rib/brisket/hamburger/stew meat/roasts/oxtail/tongue/heart/liver/suet (fat from around kidneys). We never have any tallow because they are lean. Bull meat will be very lean. Steers unless they are fattened with grains will also be lean. Your cows will have the most fat. Heifers will have some fat but will be leaner than a cow. When you figure out what cuts of meat you are getting for $4/lb esp roasts you hit the jackpot. I know near me the grocery store is $18/lb for ribeyes which I think is absolutely insane!

      @@ifeomaobuzor7409 we raise it ourself. We also haul in to our local USDA inspected butcher 5-6 times a year. Our steers are 1600-1800 lb by 18 months old. We raise balancer cattle (angus bred to Gelbvieh/Charolais bull)

      @@jdm6613 no, it costs the same price for those having meat butchered at USDA inspected facilities as just state inspected. The meat from a USDA inspected facility can be sold to public vs state inspected. I have never heard of it being done here, where they come out to a non federal/state site unless it’s to shut an individual down.

    My friend Ben doing this with whole cow and he buys it as baby and a farmer raises it and as long as he is healthy he is how much it coast and taist is amazing

    I'm surprised that you didn't find out anything about the steer. Breed, grain or grass fed, weight... 144 lbs of finished meat means the live weight was close to 1400lbs, which means a LOT of fat. A 1200lb steer (ideal weight) gives you around a 750lb carcass, which gives you under 500lbs of trimmed beef.

      No we didn't. To be honest I didn't even think of it. I always make lard from my pig each year plus my regular butter I have never even tried any beef tallow.

      That's what I thought too...I bought a 1/4 and got 70 damn lbs of burger alone! Ribeyes, Porterhouses, roasts etc.. This looks a little short.

      Two things I will say..most people do there hambuger at 1lb hers are 1.5#,s she also had two steaks per package instead of individual rap.. if you did it the way I am saying it would almost half more of what it showing

    You will find it is usually cheaper per pound to get a half cow or whole cow vs a quarter.

    I just bought my first quarter of beef (front) and when the guy showed up, it didn’t seem right. Weighed everything and it was 80lbs including the ribs. 50 lbs was ground, half dozen rib steaks, ribs, and a few roasts. I almost sent him away with it but decided to keep it but paid $700 ($550 USD). Any thoughts? Only had a couple of the steaks, they are okay but not a lot of marbel.

      could be the genentics of the cow for marble? i know wagyu beef is super high in marble. I work at at slaughterhouse and it seems the cattle is super finely bred for top range meat and lots of it. Maybe if its just a regular cow it hasn't been bred to produce that much meat? idk, wagyu cows get fattened up so much if they fall over they cant get back up, they use cranes to get em back on their feet lol

      Typically a 1/2 cow is +/- 300lbs of packaged take home meat/bones. I looked up in my area and a 1/2 cow is $1700-$2200 for 280lbs-400lbs. Most important is what weight per pound you got (700÷80). My area is $6-$8 per lb. Which at my local Walmart 80/20 ground beef is $4.50/lb. So if you only get a couple steaks out of the deal it may not be worth it depending on the weight per pound.

    The shrink wrapping is not as great as everyone thinks. The plastic gets cold and brittle and breaks easy moving the packages around in the freezer. You have to be careful moving the packages once the are cold.

    What a rip off! Glad I live in Iowa. Cant be a 1/4. I get Black Angus straight from a farmer. Pay butcher man and fill deep freezer.

      Do you get it for 4 bucks a pound like she did? I assume she’s not showing the full quarter, since she said she went in on it with her sister, I think she is showing half of a quarter? I can’t find anything for less than $9 a pound for a quarter.🤷‍♂️

      You usually pay for hanging weight (some processors charge for "live weight"), that means for the entire bled animal, minus head, guts, hide. If they start with a 750 pound carcass, you pay for 750 pounds, even if you only get 475 pounds of processed meat.

    Not happy with the 1/4 beef?? Butcher paper wrapped leaves you to reseal everything.
