The modern American school system does not encompass or define learning, it is a dominant subset of it. Do you want to know why I dislike school? Homework, sure, but more important than that are these four ways that school trains us to fail in “the real world.”
Instead of learning critical life skills on how to manage money, how to negotiate, or how to communicate, kids are mostly taught to memorize information. This is helpful to learn, but not at the cost of not learning critical life skills. Many people put these “life” skills on the onus of the parents to teach their kids, but not all parents are qualified to teach these lessons, and many assume that school is “enough learning.” The school system would be a perfect place to learn these indispensable skills.
I can’t give school a hall pass on this one, because it is set up as a core way that kids are prepared to live in the world. Why is it positioned as such when it lacks personal growth training, financial management training, communication training, emotional intelligence training, and healthy living training? Psychology is the closest course to any of these, but it’s mostly in college and typically optional.
You could come up with a few examples of where these skills are taught in school, or where some wisdom is imparted by a particularly great teacher. But this is a general problem of focus that schools have. Schools are not set up to teach us what matters most.

School needs to realize that students have an outside life out of school and they can’t control us and make us do stuff.When my teacher tells me why I’m always tired I wanna say “because you gave me a lot of work to do and books to study” but they EXPECT me to say “because I played a lot of video games last night and I didn’t have time to rest”.They don’t teach us how to pay taxes or how to find a job or what to say during a job interview, they only teach us some math problems that is useless in the future.Many people get depression from stuff like bullying, yeah they may put up anti-bullying posters but they don’t actually try to help or save people from bullying.And bullying and depression leads to school shootings and teachers say school shootings are caused by violent video games but they actually don’t, it’s caused by bullying, and depression.They need to change up the school system in the future.

Youll only need the basics of math the - +÷ yes and other math stuff that can help you process more easily and calculate or solve math problems, but then theres this geometry and b squared crap you wont need that only mathematicians need that, they give you tons of crap home work and projects that you dont need, they dont teach you to buy a house or make your own bussiness all they do is give you a new lesson after the other and give you a very hard quiz or test that has nothing to do on life

I’ve learned the hard way. Going to interview and the hiring manager didn’t even ask me for College Degree, or High School Diploma. He only asked about my experience in my jobs and what can I bring to the new position. And what I would do. Nothing about degrees ! School doesn’t teach us to succeed in life. The whole system is horrible. Math?? I’ve never used it in my lifeeeeee or any job I’ve had.

Parents should be teaching their own children this stuff, not expecting the schools to do it for them. Having said that though, if they do teach things like budgeting etc in school, I think they also need to discourage the use of credit cards, because that creates even more debt to pay off, so they should teach the children the importance of saving for the thing they want and buy it outright, whether that be new or second-hand.

All school did was prepare me for more school (i.e post secondary education) but left me willfully unprepared for the real world.
I was a straight A student in high school but honestly most of it was a bloody waste of time and with the benefit of hindsight many years later, it makes me stark raving mad. School teaches you very little that is actually useful for conducting oneself in the real world. How to communicate, negotiate, social skills, coping mechanisms for rejection and failure, how to manage finances-all of which are useful to just about everybody yet not a single one taught.

You know the school system is a failure when most kids have to use a calculator for 8•8, instead of teaching calculus and trigonometry which will be forgotten in a year engrave basic math and geometry in kids brains. Yo same situation, I'm also 17 and I just said to my family that school is useless and they all turn against me. Literally, I told them that school doesn't teach me anything and one of my sisters said " It doesn't matter, the grades are what matter". I was left shocked, I literally said to them that I'm learning more outside of school than in school and I want to quit school and they said they'll kick me out of the house and bring me to my dad's house. I can't wait to be 18 cause they are stressing me out. I have fought every day because of school. And the thing is I love to learn but school limits me. When I get kids I'm moving to Finland because there schools have shorter days and they focus on collaboration instead of forcing them to learn. Yet the children that go there are some of the best in the world
It’s like most of them don’t even realize we have other classes and other shit to do at home and in our life when they hand us a big assignment or essay to write in two days. This is why most students get so stressed out. Like someone said in the comments, a number and letter from school could literally impact our entire life. I wrote an entire research paper and did a lot of other work just to have the teacher say “good work” and then assign the next shit load of work to do.

These are exactly the dark truths our parents blind themeselves not to see, and want us to think that are not true. And then, in the end of vid you closed with such a beautiful and hopeful conclusion, I loved it!
I am lucky. My school had many courses such as money management and psychology as early as Yr9 (13-14). We also had pastoral curriculum from Yr 7 all the way to college (the school has about 14 years in it); which included many life skills not taught in school. But, it's still generally stuck in the mindset of ' school education is the best and only education you need.' In my opinion, that's what needs to change first.

1/3 feel college didn’t prepare them for the workplace.
We go to school to be taught. We learn throughout life. Unfortunately we're told we must tlearn when we go to school, not that we're going there to be taught . This confusion can cause people to hate learning.
I can't go along with this. Those life skills you learn living, and they don't require much time to learn. They do require being alert, and they do require being in the working world. I got straight As, but I always had a part time job since I was 15. But, yeah, apprenticeship is excellent for anyone who wants practical skills and make money fast. That said, all the stuff I Iearned in college might not put money in my pocket, but I look at the sky and know how the stars work, I swim in the ocean and understand the tides, the trees and understand their growth, and many other things that make my life richer. However, he's right: life in the working world is much more uncertain and unforgiving than school. No one gets all As. You fail a lot; you get screwed. There isn't a syllabus, and the tests arent often graded fairly. But good grades and good study habits do carry over.: you learn how to think, be organized, meet a deadline, and generally get things done. Most financially successful people I've met who skipped college--often out of necessity--feel the absence keenly. It might be an indulgence, but it's a wonderful one if you're there to satisfy your curiosity and not just check off boxes and get grades because it promises more money down the pike. It probably will if you're in a STEM, but if not, then you'd better be enjoying the ride because your liberal arts degree has a high opportunity cost.
We really need to do something about this
i truly agree to this. Im 13 and I really want to learn this stuff at a young age. My parents are too lazy to teach me anything and I dont know how to do any of these things. Im getting fearful of the future because of this
you should be very proud of yourself for wanting to learn the real stuff at only 13. you have so much time on your side. I'm only 19 and I wish i learnd this stuff earlier

There’s teachers that will assign tons and tons of homework that needs to be completed in one day and they will expect everyone to be able to complete it with no problems without even thinking about anything that students have to deal with. We can’t hope for the best, as schools never take anything into consideration.
The Fact that im watching this during online classes shows that there is something wrong with school
In school, it is only the smart people will be able to get a good job and a good future. I always wondered why everything in your future depended on one letter grade in school. It just seems stupid if you think about it for a while. What’s even worse is that students that want to speak out on these problems for the better can’t do anything about these dumb systems. Teachers and schools just always want to give more and more homework because they think it’s always “better.” They fail to consider the cons to this stuff. Then there’s the teachers and schools that give work during summer break. Kids literally have 10 months of school and 2 months of break. Some students already do boatloads of work every day for 10 months in school and then when summer break comes, they realize they have to do more. I remember when my teacher listed a ton of things that summer was good for like relaxing, calming down, taking a break and all that stuff, and then she proceeded to give tons of work over the summer. I just wish schools would actually listen to what some people have to say and take action to fix their problems. But of course, they don’t. You can literally go to an adult who got straight A's in school a question tested. More than half of them won't know how to do it.
The current education does not realise how easy it is to prepare a student for the future,they only see preparation thru paper and writing while they dont know that we have virtual realities,educational games and other means of actually trying the job in practice,schools should think about the future of every student but not all jobs,only the ones which are close to what the student likes like carpenting should be mandatory because you aren't suppose to be a lazy butt on the chair ,doing nothing but writing and writing , reading and reading.Theres a saying-"practice makes perfect" but why arent teachers actually preparing us for the future?They fear that the jobs which actually need attendace will be under enployed and the economic crisis will become world wide,we understand that but not everyone is suppose to work as a cashier,retail or other boring jobs which will just kill the person metally and physically instead we should try and make students feel the job with their muscles not just their brains,the brain is important at all but muscle memory is always on the same line as normal memory.I live in a poor country(Latvia) where education is becomming literally impossible to keep up and i dont mean it updates and upgrades and it never does and never will only a few things from the technical standpoint have been added to the school overhall and thats projectors and laptops but only the teachers get to use them to ruin our lives with grades,oh and about grades,they should be removed and instead focused on the students learning and not showing him/her how he/she is doing in his grades because it makes every single student in this world worried,people get beaten by their paretnts,abused,treated poorly and the students themselves can get depressed,crazy,psychopatic simply because the student got an f- on a test or exam.Plus school overall is a prison,there is no outside contacts,we are kept in rooms 7 hours a day 5 times a week and thats not healthy for the persons metal and physical health.Students should go out on more trips to factories or the jobs of their dreams maybe try the job about 10 times to get the student to understand can he do this for the next 45 yars or so?But i personally think schools dont use tech is because they fear they will loose control and the technicaly world will take them away,but on the its the opposite,students will learn how to use their modern tools to make a future,how to pay taxes or how to find a job on the internet atleast a small one but it is pointless to fight,hope is destroyed by capitalist people who are guarded by a massive wall of politics and business men which make up facts to make u think u cant go thru the wall simply because u dont have a paper stating u sat behind a desk for your whole childhood and teen years.
It is funny how teenagers understand that school is bad more than adults and adults are more intelligent and their brain is fully developed more then teenagers
