  • Sailing season is almost here in Alaska, and it’s time to start figuring out what I’m going to do about the sailboat in Mexico. There is a lot of planning ahead, and a lot of logistics to cover. It is a long sail from where it is at to Alaska, plus there are repairs to do before I can go. Oh, that and I haven’t even asked for leave yet. The biggest issue is, will I get the three to four months of leave I need to sail a boat from Mexico to Alaska. That has yet to be seen.

You haven't mentioned it...but...I assume you know the trip north along the coast is called "the bash". It CAN be done...barely...but it's absolutely miserable. The route from Mexico to Alaska is via Hawaii for a good reason.

Yes, unfortunately I am aware of this. My ideal plan would be to to head out toward Hawaii and tack North when able; well that or just start my trip around now. My issues currently with planning is the boat has no electronics (which will be fixed), and I am currently solo. I would prefer to do some shorter multi-day trips with a friend or two, before I do a long passage like that solo. I have sailed a lot, but have had the luxury of being able to stop and anchor every night. But that all said, I did sail solo from Washington to Alaska with no experience, so you never know LOL.... Thanks for the reminder, and keeping it on my options list!!

As you of course know we left Puerto Vallarta May 2nd and hopped our way up in 2020. The "bash" wasn't the horror show it is claimed to be if you can pick your windows and are willing to motor when necessary. If you want to know about good anchorages and tips on places to stay I'm always on here.

I am definitely interested, especially in any spots I can anchor for free (or at least relatively cheaply)... the west coast looks like an expensive trip.

@@northstarsouth we anchored almost all the way. I'll try and put together a map marking our free anchorages.
