Yeah, I had a 1975 Rx2 made in NZ. They changed the tail lights and a few other small things like the dash. I can't really tell of the power cause I bought it and immediately changed the engine for a 13b monster bridge port. One of the coolest cars I've ever owned, should never have sold her. I remember going into Taupo NZ on a long slightly down hill straight and seeing the rev counter sitting @ 7800 rpm, well into the buzzer. She could leave the v8s of the day standing, much to the disgust of my old man, who owned a 351 Ford. I actually had the power and handling to play with him, so much fun. I'm old now, but I would take her back in a heartbeat.

One of the RX2s I had was a yellow/mustard 4 door '75 (and I actually lived in Taupo at the time!). Not only was the styling a little different but the suspension had improved geomtry.

The Red car at 3:02. We also got these 4-door cars as 2nd gen. Rx2.
They were the ones with one distributor. Same 12A engine.
Both 4-speed manual and 3-speed auto.
The only way you could identify them from the 616 from outside.........The centre of the dash was raised, and they came with bucket seats.
616 guys used to fit the rear Rx2 rear side-emblems and the rear garnish emblem that said "Rotary Engine".
Whenever you overtook them, then they always tried to show you that they could run with the Rx2 !!
    Trinidad & Tobago,
    West Indies.

My first car was a used '72 RX-2 sedan 4sp manual I bought around 76-77. Lots of fun to drive and sneaky fast. My best friend loved it so much he went out and bought a used RX-3. Those were some fun times back then. Also owned a 2000 Protege 1.8L 5sp manual that I bought new. Also a fun car to drive minus the brap brap.

Had a 1972 automatic in that same color back in the mid 80s. Miss it dearly.

I actually owned one of these in 1980 or ‘81, a blue 1972 2-door rotary. It was quick and fun to drive. I got is used - very used - for really cheap, just a few hundred bucks. But being a gas-guzzler, in a recession and out of work and starting a family, I couldn’t afford to realize my dream of fixing it up, so sold it for something more practical - so boring I don’t even remember what.

My dad purchased a brand new 1972 2-door RX2. It would rev unbelievably high. Every weekend on Skyline blvd in the Santa Cruz mountains, it was fun to drive and had trouble passing gas stations. Mom went head on with a kid on a moped otherwise I would still have it.

I love the, Mazda RX2. I had one in South Africa, later on I had the Mazda RX2 Capella. It was a bit heavy on fuel. But the performance was awesome 😎👍

Had a 1973 Capella, gears and suspension altered for rally racing. Later dropped the engine into a 250cc Suzuki bike frame, was a monster.

I had a blue ‘72, like this. It was amazing, as in 4th gear it had torque at 10Mph, or I could do 50Mph in 1st. What I loved the most, was response like a slingshot!

My first car here in Australia was a 1972 RX2 Capella. Awesome little car. Didnt have the original rotary in it though. It had a 1.2Lt when I purchased it, which I switched out for a 2Lt.

In Malaysia it was known as the Capella RE or simply Mazda RE with 4door only. Engine was initially 10A & later 12A. -This awesome car did very well in Saloons races👍👍

I remember back in 96 my brother bought one for 3,000 clean all original of some guy and sold it cause he got low on money and said I'll get another one. Never did they got rare and most pricey as the years past. He had told me in early 90s they were still in junkyards and they would go get parts for them this was in Los Angeles.

Came across this channel love the old scool rotary cars quick break down off my head so the mazda rx2 1970-74 was to become the mazda 626 here in the states before this there are Mazda cosmo sport didnt make it to be imported here a few made it very very rare there was a Mazda r100 1969-71 came equipped with a 10a rotary engine very rare here known as the familia in Japan this will be made into the Mazda 323 in later years and of course the rx3 1973-78 which we see in the video yellow car in the garage all had piston counter parts there was a rotary pick up1974-76 rx4 1974-76 known to become the 929 and rx5 known as cosmo very heavy made for luxury all had 13b engines the rx2 and rx3 had 12a twin distributor top mounted starter which chaned in 1973 to a lower mounted starter as well as a single distributor these light models were the hot rods of there day especially the rx3 which leads up to the rx7 chassis ...would really love to see the rotary engine make a return

This was my dad's first car back in the 80s. Used to belong to a mechanic and he got it to drive around. The car then broke beyond repair and it ended up in a junk yard not long after. Wish I could have at least seen it!

That exhaust note is probably not very original as you have a 13B with a pronounced “brap” sound. Thanks for the vid.

Pretty sure Mazda didn't think of the 616 as just a variation of the RX2. Like all the sedans back then, they came up with a body/suspension concept that would share as many parts as possible between rotary/piston...I don't know the build figures but I would guess at 60-40 in the pistons favour.
