He was not a super hero. We just like to idealise people tragically dead. Bruce was drinking and addicted to meds and only made it after he died or made it because his death brought more people to see the movie? Brandon Lee was not good. Dacascos and countless others were better and more talented. He was not considered that good till Crow's promo started coming out with similarity to his dad's death. Musician Kurt Cobain would have overdosed by now etc etc We always think of tragically died people as ideal super hero. If Jackie Chan did more serious movies and died during one of his famous stunts noone would be talking about Bruce now.

Amazing that you were able to get Tommy Carruthers, he is the real deal and is the modern embodiment of the JKD philosophy. Bruce Lee was way ahead of his time, there is no one else that was doing what he did in 60's-70's. On top of being a pioneer in martial arts, he was a cha cha champion, philosopher, nutritionist, and incorporated training/bodybuilding components into his art form. He even invented equipment to train specific parts of the body that were crucial to combat.

He himself said you shouldn’t stand still but keep learning ,use what works for you.

I've heard martial artists critique Enter the Dragon for some of its fight scenes as compared to Bruce's earlier films. But I'll always consider it to be the most seminal martial arts film ever made due to Bruce's intense onscreen persona in that film. He doesn't talk a lot, but his gaze is deadly. You can't fake that. Bruce's embodiment of that character carries the entire film.

"Enter the Dragon" may be the most seminal martial arts film, but it isn't Bruce Lee's best. "The Way of the Dragon" and "Fist of Fury" are much better films. In those two films, Lee doesn't have to share screen time with John Saxon and Jim Kelly (I think the studio was hedging their bets). So true, people have the audacity to comment on Bruce Lees personal life yet the majority haven't accomplished anything........they really piss me off. What inspires me about Bruce Lee, is what he overcame. This was an Asian man who knew nobody in America, a very racist America at the time and was able to rise to the very top of success, through massive hard work, diligence and self belief. People can learn so much from his story, but they dwell on really superficial and unimportant things like "can Bruce beat up this person"or he slept with this person and or was arrogant. Bruce Lee had the blueprint that all super successful people have, which is to set really high level goals almost impossible goals, like Elon, bezoz etc and put plans in place to achieve them. The fact that if I asked a kid today who is Steve mcqueen they'd probably have no clue but they'd know who Bruce Lee is, yet in the 60s Steve Mcqueen was the biggest star on the planet shows the lofty heights that Bruce's mindset was on. This is what people need to focus on with Bruce Lee, to inspire the next generation instead of commenting on UA-cam about how Bruce isn't a real fighter. Almost like complaining about a cobweb on the ceilings of the sistine chapel.

Bruce was a martial arts prodigy... a lot of doubters simply do not understand that Bruce was able to do things most people couldn't, and on top of that, he would study and absorb so many different arts extremely quickly. Grandmaster Ed Parker talked about this, as did other world class fighters that were very close to him.
Bruce had flaws as a person, absolutely no doubt about that. He was extremely intense and passionate about everything, including his short temper, and arrogant (but confident) demeanor. He rubbed people the wrong way sometimes because of this, but he was also fanatical about martial arts study, and reached a skill level few people do. He broke barriers for Asian Americans, and he inspired people of all colors for generations (and still does). Respect to the great Lee Jun Fan (Bruce Lee).

That's not historically accurate, Bruce Lee was not a martial arts prodigy, Bruce was sick as a child, he had chrypordchidsm and slow physical development he didn't even start learning wing chun until he was 16 this was verified by wong shung leung. Bruce Lee's kicking was beginner level, he wasn't an advanced kicker it's not true. According to Hawkins cheung Bruce Lee had 2 months of Northern shaolin kicking lessons before he left Hong Kong, in 64 jhoon rhee stated that Bruce Lee's kicking was no match for taekwondo and that he couldn't kick so he taught him the side kick in detail. Bruce Lee's kicking philosophy in the 60s was to kick below the waist never above, in his TV show he did higher kicks for show but he wasn't a kicking expert he was simply doing what little he had learnt in Hong Kong. I would say its true that Chuck Norris did teach Lee high kicks because Hwang ing sik stated in an interview that Bruce Lee's kicking had Korean traits, now that could be from jhoon rhee but we don't know how long rhee trained Lee but we do know that Chuck norris and Bruce Lee worked out together for a number of years and that norris was a tang soo do artist which of course is a Korean kicking art. Hwang jung Lee the best kicker to ever be in movies said on camera that Bruce Lee's kicking was not bad, he wasn't bad he didn't even say he was any good, now this is someone who was not just an actor but a real life master that trained army soldiers in self defence and someone who used his martial arts to kill during the Vietnam War so serious combat knowledge. I asked Hwang jung Lee myself the same question and he stated the exact same answer Bruce Lee's kicking was not bad.

For me, all the “bad stuff” that’s recently surfaced, or has been floating around for decades but is receiving more scrutiny now, simply helps to humanize the man. I remember listening to a guy talk about a service he’d built to help ex-convicts find jobs and mainstream back into society, and he was asked if they ask people what they’d been incarcerated for. He said they neither ask nor care; the clients have served their time and, as fellow human beings, are more than the worst thing they’ve done in their lives. A noble sentiment. And extending that sentiment to Bruce, he was more than all the bad things-if that’s how you feel about it-he did; conversely, he was also more than all the good and great things he did. He was, as he was so fond of saying, a human being.

Is this character assassination? As Tommy said, we're learning that Bruce was a real person with flaws, like everyone else. Personally, I say we have to be realistic. Yes, Bruce was a pioneer in martial arts and his philosophies have inspired millions. And he was also a coke addict. All of this is true. My question is which do you emphasize? Is coke addiction a deal breaker for you? It isn't for me. And it doesn't change Bruce's accomplishments or his positive impact, especially in my life. I wasn't sure if he had used any, but the Baker letters recently confirmed that. He was in LA in the 60's after all. I''ve used psychedelics myself, & have always had a positive experience. For those that are intelligent & of sound mind, it definitely inspires creativity. I think Taoism had a significant influence on JKD too. Be formless & shapeless like water. That's Taoism. JKD was also the original MMA. People say MMA is a sport & JKD is for the street, but MMA didn't start out as a sport. The holder of 7 world records. He practically started the martial arts genre. You see Bruce Lee's influence undeniable and is in practically all martial art movies. Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Jean Claude Van Damm, Steven Segal, Westley Snipes and the list goes on forever.. they all own Bruce Lee a debt of gratitude. Like Muhammad Ali.. Bruce was off the charts fast, he had more of a variety of techniques he used and his strikes & kicks were timed better he didn't have to do the splits in every movie and let's face it Van Damme did some ridiculous strikes and overly telegraphed kicks etc, anyway Bruce's philosophy, techniques, speed, strategies were all superior to Van Damme. Bruce was an exceptional martial artist with an IQ off the chart when it came to studying the arts. Personally I don’t believe the other contemporaries or modern day artists could actually take him. Not because of the arts involved, but because of his exceptional fight brain and capacity to work around his opponents working out what to while actually shaping what to do. Martial skill is more than whether you can do a fancy kick, equally as important is to do what is necessary. I think Bruce had a capacity to go beyond and really finish the job, where as modern day artists would probably stop far earlier in a fight. I would really love to do one of Dan Inosanto’s seminars as he is probably the only Guru alive to tell how it was with Bruce. Just my take on it.

Is Bruce better than the others? I think yes, but with an exception. Bruce is the definitive HK style screen fighter. Jet, Jackie, Donnie, Sammo, and all the rest in that style just can't measure up to Lee's technical precision, speed, power, charisma, and passion when he's onscreen. Van Damme is the exception in my mind, because JCVD and Bruce are so very different in their styles. It's like comparing apples and oranges, both are perfect in their own way. I think many people feel like Bruce and JCVD are the most charismatic and beautiful performers for a reason. Film fighting is an art, some people have it others don't. Being a good fighter in the ring does not mean you will be a great screen fighter, much the opposite often times. Don "The Dragon" Wilson would beat most any martial arts actor in a kickboxing match but you won't find many people that would argue that his movie fight scenes are on par with Bruce Lee, Van Damme, Jet Li, or Jackie Chan. As for your claim that there is no proof that Bruce had skill in speed and power off-camera, there are plenty of videos of him demonstrating considerable power. The man trained on a 700 pound bag, what more do you want? You claiming he had no speed off-camera is just ludicrous. Numerous eyewitnesses have commented on it and once again, plentiful video footage exists that supports that Bruce was exceptionally fast.

Tommy Carruthers! Haven't seen this guy in a while!
To answer the title, as much as I also like the other stars, Bruce can't really be topped, even after his passing. He paved the way for not just martial arts actors, but Asian actors in general from all over the world. He was one of the first to introduce Kung Fu, if not THE first, to a bigger audience.
Regarding his physicality, Bruce was a complete package. He's got among the best physiques besides Arnold, Sly, Donnie, and Van Damme, but what sets Bruce apart from them, is that he worked out all for the sake of his martial arts training, and to improve his speed and power. And he was among the first martial artists, again, if not the first, to incorporate different martial techniques and training methods to his own strengths. He was basically Achilles, or Heracles in a human body.
Regarding authenticity, and being yourself. It's understandable why Brandon Lee refused to play his dad in Dragon: The Bruce Lee story. Imitation is pale, as Brandon said.
The actor, Mike Moh, who played Bruce Lee, performed really well in OUATIH. Sad thing though, is after having read the script, he doubts whether he should play the part or not, for the way Bruce was written. You can check out Lucky Boys Podcast for their interview with an actor, Perry Yung, who also knows Mike personally.
Also, a big bonus. Eddie Griffin shared a story once on that documentary "How Bruce Lee Changed The World". He watched Fist of Fury at a drive-in theatre with two screens, porno being on the other screen. Eddie said that Bruce was so good, nobody was watching the porno screen.

There is some guy on here who has found some very interesting pictures. One was of Bruce Lee in his yard, breaking a rock in half, using just 2 fingers, which apparently he did on a daily basis.
He also had 6 sparring matches against Bolo, on the set of Enter and won 5 out of 6 of them. He beat a highly trained Shotokan black belt, the size of a fxxking bear 5 out of 6 times, which throws the whole size argument clean out of the window. And that ONE loss was probably simply due to the restrictions of it being a sparring match, rather than a real fight.
Then there is the footage, that I'm sure you've seen, of Bruce Lee striking a 10th Dan black belt, starting from 6ft away and the black belt failing to block him in time.
Anyone who thinks they would have had even the remotest chance against someone like that is living in fxxking La La Land.

Chuck Norris has gone on record saying that Bruce Lee was a very tough trainer and that Bruce Lee would continue to train when Chuck Norris would rest. That says the level of advancement that Bruce Lee was at that he was training harder than the world champion. Any of them saying they were "world champions'" would be like an American soccer team claiming to be "world champions" without ever having played in the World Cup games! Or even against a team from any where outside the USA! Yes, those guys did something Bruce Lee never did, they competed, successfully, in martial arts tournaments, but they were never "world" champions.

As for Dan Inosanto saying Benny would beat Bruce "in a real fight", though it's a matter of conjecture in any case, you're misquoting Dan. Knowing all that Lee had speed, strenght, technique, experience fighting in the street and passion. None of the martial artist since Lee had what he had in his eyes: you knew he could kill you. Lee intimidated the guy that played Robin in Batman to the degree that this man soiled himself- how do you think Lee looked at him? Robin knew Lee could literally kill him and there was nothing he could do to stop him. You had to have a little bit more in any category of the qualities that Bruce had: speed, technique, strenght flexibility, passion...etc., nobody has that. Some may be a little stronger but fall far short in so many areas! Lee was more than strong enough to break bones, so how do you stop that...most have no where near Lee's speed! One hit is all he needs. Eyes, throat, kidneys, liver, groin...etc, too many vulnerable areas to defend them against a sharp shooter. Lee did pushups on 2 fingers or thumbs at extreme angles, high, low, sides...so his strenght didn't deminish at those angles. Who can say that?

Almost all of Bruce Lee's students were boxers, Judoka, Kenpo guys....Danny Inosanto was a brown belt in Judo and a Kenpo blackbelt and said he could do nothing with Bruce when he met him. The others have said pretty much the same. Joe Lewis and Chuck Norris, both already karate point champions went and trained with Bruce. (Lewis later did some "full contact" fights). A black belt, high level martial artist doesn't go and train with someone unless they have respect for their skills and technique. Unless you think they are your equal or better why waste time training with them? After Bruce died some people, out of ego or self promotion have said things that I don't think they would have said if Bruce was standing in front of them.

In my opinion I don’t think it would be much of a fight with any of the fighters you mentioned because these are basically stars who fight as well but Bruce was a fighter and trained himself in a away that if anyone posed any threat then he would up the gears and it wouldn’t last long at all.

If Bruce was alive today there would be no doubt that he was and is one of the greatest martial artist the world has ever known. Before every belt promotion I would watch scenes from his movies fighting. I study his form and technique and ace my promotions. My story isn’t unique as I’m sure many martial artists did the same.

It’s unfair to compare Bruce Lee to modern MMA fighters because the combat sport has evolved so much. And Bruce was way ahead of his time. But if he were to cross train today, we can only imagine how terrifying he would be.

I've been a fan of Tommy Carruthers' work since 2003, when the late Jesse Glover narrated over his training footage and gave him praise for his techniques and training. When Bruce's first student praises a martial artist, y'all definitely need to show him love.
And he's right about Bruce Lee as a martial artist. The thing is, Tommy Carruthers is self-taught, and he built up his initial skill by following the workouts presented in the book, Bruce Lee: The Art of Expressing The Human Body, even recreating some of the custom workout tools that Bruce used. Watch any of Tommy's vids, and you'll see the proof in the pudding that Bruce's research and workout notes were legit.

JKD or krav maga is still great for self-defense though because most people cannot afford to train more complex techniques for years and years. There are honest wing chun guys and the like who have been to MMA though and they have been beaten up in seconds but at least they did not make excuses; if you cannot kick a guy in the leg before being knocked out or taken down you cannot kick him in the balls either.

I love Jackie, too, at least his classic movies (from, say, 1978 to 1994), wouldn't want to bring up his political affiliations or family life, but Jackie's easily one of the all-time great action movie stars, he's earned his place in the film history books, but Bruce paved the way for Jackie as the 1st international Asian martial arts movie star (and Jackie knows that). Also, Jackie was smart enough to realize he needed to be very different from Bruce Lee (more comedic, more physical comedy, playing more of an every man, underdog type) to escape always being compared to a "legend", Jackie insisted on being his own persona, to his credit.
