Thanks for the how-to. Dealer wanted $1500 for this repair. Did it myself for $150 in parts in 1.5 hours. On my 2016 suburban the lights are connected to the fender over the radiator support. I was able to do the repair by just rotating the support back wards and leaving it on the car.

Great job on the repair. Thanks for making the video. The OEM condensers are very hard to get, about a 2 months wait at my local dealer. Napa has a few in stock and was lucky enough to get one. Just amazed at the poor quality of GM these days. First had a transmission go out on my 2016 Silverado back in the Spring which cost me 7000 to get repaired. Now the air conditioning stopped working. This truck is becoming a big lemon, afraid of what will be next to fail. Only a 5 year old truck with 130,000 miles on it, NEVER going to buy a GM vehicle again.
I get my ac condenser fixed in a few days and I’m super excited. I went a year with no Ac and mechanics gave me the run around and I spent over 3k on things that did not solve my issues. I then heard about this common leak on a weld, got mine checked and turned out It was my condenser

I just replaced mine on my '14 Silverado a few days ago after watching your video and a couple others, so as to be sure that I knew exactly what I was getting into and what I had to do. I must say the 2 middle bolts on the cross brace were a complete pain in the arse, especially the drivers side behind the windshield washer fluid tank. Other than that the replacement wasn't too hateful, just time consuming. I purchased a vacuum pump prior to doing the job, so I did the vacuuming of the system and recharging of the refrigerant myself too. I didn't have to worry about evacuating the old refrigerant because due to the leak there was none in the system to remove. So far (fingers crossed) everything seems to be good and AC is working fine right now, lol. After seeing how much it could cost at a shop or dealership there was absolutely no way I was willing to pay that much when after pricing out everything (condenser, vacuum pump, freon, ect...) it wound up costing me a quarter to a third of the cost by doing myself. Thanks for the video, it really helped me make my decision and saved me a ton of money.
Did you have to add AC Compressor oil separately from the freon?? Getting ready to start this project today and from all of the comments, yours had the most details when it came to issues I may face. Appreciate you sharing

Awesome vid. Thanks for this info!! My Silverado had a leak on the condenser and mechanic wanted to charge me $1500! Luckily I had extended warranty and i was covered fully! I just had to pay $100 for the deductible. 😁 I heard this issue is so common with this truck cause the condenser is made of aluminum, and if you are going to replace it, it should be replaced with a metal condenser.
A metal condenser? Isnt Aluminum metal? Also its is made of aluminum due to its head conductivity properties as it needs to dissipate heat so you cant just make it out of any old metal. It was an iditiotic design of using tack welds to hold mounting brackets that are also at a seam where the drier tank is welded to the fins.
Fixed exact same condenser leak with quick setting epoxy, sandpaper, and carb cleaner. Took 15 minutes and didn't have to remove a thing (all work done reaching through front grill.) 1.Clean area with carb cleaner. 2. Sand metal around leak 3. Clean again. 4. Apply epoxy with something like a toothpick (don't use plastic, epoxy may melt it.) 5. Let cure (see epoxy directions) mine was a 90 second super fast curing. 6. recharge freon. Did mine almost 1 year ago and still working great.
Same here! I just got quoted 1500! And once I asked for the part number they denied it just because I denied there service. I figured I’d do it myself but they didn’t wanna give me the part number so I couldn’t take it somewhere else and get it fixed. So no I’m working on it on and saving myself money!
I'm getting ready to do it on a 17 Suburban, too. Did you have to remove the entire headlight housing? Took a look at the bolts on the underside of the crossmember (driver side, by the washer fluid reservoir) and it looks almost impossible to get to them. Can you describe more how you did it?

The dealer I had diagnose my a/c quoted me $1667. Another dealer quoted me $1300. I ended up paying $146 for diagnostics $154 for a new condenser(I replaced) $148 for a shop to vacuum and recharge(which I should have just bought my own vacuum) Total paid for cold ass a/c=$450 The shop that recharged my system said they replaced 27 condensers on a fleet of Chevy/gmc trucks for one of their customers in 1 year.

I was told a long time ago to put a hardware cloth in front of the condenser on the back side of my grill and I never did it. Now I'm having issues with the rocks that hit the front of it, not so much on the welds like this man is saying but I know the welds are leaking as well. But I think if you put hardware cloth behind your grill. After installing the new condenser it will prevent problems in the future

Question #1, could this be welded as a repair? #2, should I avoid the ACDELCO unit? A TYC brand has a lifetime warranty, instead of 2 years.
there is company's that repair radiators etc .. but you still need to take it off so probably better to just put a new one, as far as witch one as far as I know they haven't updated their old condenser.. so I think the problem will come back
Your video is awesome. Have you thought of using epoxy to reinforce the welds? I'm thinking about JB weld or a 2 part epoxy to add structural integrity to the condenser. What do you think?
Great video. One question: we don’t have the AC equipment that you do. Can we replace it and then drive it to a mechanic and have them draw a vacuum on it and charge it or no?
Got the condenser replaced. But I didn’t have the vacuum pump at the moment. So I really can’t do a leak check. But 1 minor mistake cost me the transmission. One of the connection on the upper right hand side came off while I was driving. All of the transmission fluid got totally drained dried! Be extra careful when connecting the lines. Make sure the thin clips are on securely and the rubber sleeve on without popping back out. Now the truck is vibrating and having hard time changing gears.

To be completely honest this trucks came with so many different options, you would have to follow the transmission lines and see it they also go to the radiator. Because some did and some didn’t. Mostly the 2500 and 4x4 did go to the radiator also .. but not all of them.
GM has went to shit. My wife's 40k Tahoe leaks here. About the 20th issue since buying new. My 2013 Tacoma with 140k, zero issues. Tried to tell her. Learned my lesson and reaffirms my Toyota choice.
From what I read on this GM issue, they are willing to replace the Condenser on the Tahoe and the Suburban, but us Silverado and Sierra owners are shit outa luck.

Is It ok to spray paint the Condenser with High heat pain? My Truck is Black and the old Condenser is Black but when I ordered what I saw online which was Black, I ended up getting the standard aluminum color the company. I was told to just use High heat paint spray. Just want to know if its ok from another Mechanic.

hector meza 65k miles and mine started leaking out this spot. But at 45k miles the compressor seized up on me 🤦🏻♂️
Legit got the truck a week ago. Checked my ac my condensor is leaking my compressor locked up and my copper is leaking.
I’m in the same boat buddy. Just got in my truck today and it’s 90° outside and my AC is blowing hot.
Took me a bit longer than everyone else in the comments but still saved me $900. Some of the bolts were in really awkward spots. Great video.

Wow. I'm right over 120,000 miles and my transmission went out and then shortly after I was told there is a leak on my condenser.

I wondered if it could be repaired. A buddy has a TIG welder, hmmmm could it be welded? Or, is it a can of worms? If it fails in 1 place, why not 2?

Taking that metal brace off over the condenser was hell on Earth. Make sure you have a flex socket handy.

there is company's that repair radiators etc .. but you still need to take it off so probably better to just put a new one, as far as witch one as far as I know they haven't updated their old condenser.. so I think the problem will come back
Your video is awesome. Have you thought of using epoxy to reinforce the welds? I'm thinking about JB weld or a 2 part epoxy to add structural integrity to the condenser.

Got the condenser replaced. But I didn’t have the vacuum pump at the moment. So I really can’t do a leak check. But 1 minor mistake cost me the transmission. One of the connection on the upper right hand side came off while I was driving. All of the transmission fluid got totally drained dried! Be extra careful when connecting the lines. Make sure the thin clips are on securely and the rubber sleeve on without popping back out. Now the truck is vibrating and having hard time changing gears.

I’m doing this this week I haven’t vacuumed out the system but I’m sure most the freeon is gone lol if I don’t vacuum and install it do I need to disconnect the battery first for so I just add the free on right after installing it? Thanks
vacuum .. always vacuum .. it removes moisture also

Could the transmission line leak after the condenser is replaced? I had mine replaced 3 days ago and on day 2 of driving had a huge transmission fluid leak in the front drivers side engine compartment.

To be completely honest this trucks came with so many different options, you would have to follow the transmission lines and see it they also go to the radiator. Because some did and some didn’t. Mostly the 2500 and 4x4 did go to the radiator also .. but not all of them.

GM has went to shit. My wife's 40k Tahoe leaks here. About the 20th issue since buying new. My 2013 Tacoma with 140k, zero issues. Tried to tell her. Learned my lesson and reaffirms my Toyota choice.

From what I read on this GM issue, they are willing to replace the Condenser on the Tahoe and the Suburban, but us Silverado and Sierra owners are shit outa luck.
Did mine today. For some reason the cooling fans were on full blast when I started it back up. Shut it off again and restarted, back to normal 🤔
Great video👍🏼before removing the ac lines from the condenser do I need to discharge the refrigerant and is there anything I should know of or do or I just go on and just remove all lines without doing anything
if there is freon still on the lines.. then yes they will need to be discharged.

Yes you do, depending on how much you lost .. but its usually around 6oz
I've got a '16 gmc sierra that I've just changed the condenser following your video. My only question is do I need to add oil to the a/c? If so, how much?
yes depending on how much it was lost ... I think the entire system takes about 8oz ... so MAYBE 3 or 4oz?
This will be the second replacement for my 2015 Sierra. Got ripped off at the dealer the first time to replace (back when the part was on backorder). First at 40k, now at 100k miles. F you GM!

Did you guys hear a hissing from under the passenger side dash. Before your a/c went out? I have a 2017 kept hearing a hissing noise and my a/c stopped working
thats normal to an extent .. you have the expansion valve on the fire wall there .. so you will hear it sometimes

Is It ok to spray paint the Condenser with High heat pain? My Truck is Black and the old Condenser is Black but when I ordered what I saw online which was Black, I ended up getting the standard aluminum color the company. I was told to just use High heat paint spray. Just want to know if its ok from another Mechanic.
