Loved this video. We’re coming to this part of the country in a couple of weeks. Can’t wait. Your enthusiasm and knowledge is infectious. I especially like the bit where you’re climbing the tower and looking at all the windows in detail. I love old buildings but I’m not sure I’d be able to climb them like that! Thanks!

Breath taking. I'm in Wales, and we have a lot of stunning countryside and heritage to explore here, but I forget that the rest of Britain is also full of similar, sometimes more beautiful places to visit. Great vid.

The waterfall is tricky to find but if you walk down the path from the car and look for any of the small streams on the left then follow down to the main river then walk upstream its not far. Loads of history in that area its lovely, ATB, 🤘🤘🤘

Wonderful video of our home county Damian. So many places of interest to visit and see. I was slightly disappointed with Roughting Linn though when I first went, I thought it didn't live up to it's reputation though the cup and ring area more than made up for it. Thanks for the kind words Mick, I do lots of takes and editing till I get things right. I make notes of things I want to say and use my own words. I've tried talking from a script and doesn't sound right. Watching channels like yours inspired me to add a bit of history as wild camping on its own gets a bit repetative after a while. There is so much history in that area its amazing. ATB, Damian.

Camping in the countryside is something people should try at least once in their lives. Modern living detaches us from our ancient past. I have a Phontom 3 Professional, wish I had something more compact like a Mavic Pro but got the drone cheap when they brought out the Phantom 4. I find flying stressful as I'm never sure if it will come back in one piece or if it will just fly away. For me its a tool for making videos and get more of a buzz from seeing it safely land and looking at the footage on me PC. There are some great places to visit in that area and will be making more videos from there soon. Thanks for your comment Mick, ATB

Really interesting stuff. I'm off to Cumbria next week. The site were staying at has a couple of stone circles nearby I will be doing a video. On the subject of iron age hill forts I have a very impressive one on my doorstep. Penshaw Hill is actually one of the largest triple rampart forts in northern England. Bet not many people realise that fact.

Steves Outdoors NE did you know Cumbria and Cumberland are so-called because the people there were The Cymru......native Britons the same as the Welsh. All Native Britons were referred to as Welsh including the Cumbrians and Cornish right up until after the middle ages.
Penshaw Hill bears the mark of the original British tongue. Pen means mountain top in Welsh, it's the same word as the Scottish Ben...as in Ben Nevis.

I read somewhere years ago regarding the horse statue & rider. A raised leg signifies the rider died in battle. I'm not sure to be honest. Worth researching I suppose.

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  6 років тому

The statue had a lot of controvacy surrounding it, here is some info regarding that, "
      Hugh GOUGH
The statue has had a troubled history. At the time of his
death in 1869, Gough's friends felt that since he was born in Co.
Limmerick and, when not on military service, had always lived in his
native land, a statue on a prominent site in Dublin was appropriate, at
either Carlisle Bridge, Foster Place or Westmoreland Road. However, the
Dublin Corporation was reluctant to commemorate a servant of the empire
who had gained the nickname the 'Hammer of the Sikhs', and vetoed each
      of these suggestions.
      Year of creation:1880 Rider(s):Hugh Gough (1779
-1869), 1st Viscount Gough was a British Army officer. He is said to
have commanded in more general actions than any other British officer of
the 19th century except the Duke of Wellington. He was made Field Marshal in 1862.Sculptor(s):John Henry/Brock Foley
This statue received much abuse before its
demise, losing its head and sword in 1944 (found back in the River
Liffey) and a rear leg in 1956. It was finally blown off its pedestal in
1957. The unveiling of this doomed statue in 1878 by his grandfather
turned out to be the earliest memory of Winston Churchill as he recalls
in his autobiographical work ‘My early life 1874-1904’. In 1988 the
remains of the statue came into the possession of a distant relative of
Gough, who had this fine piece of art restored and re-erected in 1990
near Chillingham castle in the UK.

You are right, if the history doesn't fit their narrative or career's built on false information then they ignore the evidence. There are rectangular megalithic stone blocks in Australia weighing hundreds of tons they try to say is natural. The ancients were much more advanced than we give them credit for. Just look at Gobekli Tepe, 12,000 years old monuments when the people were supposed to be hunter gatherer's pre occupied with trying to find food and survive rather than posessing advanced building skills.

And apparently you can book accommodations there. That castle would be a great next video. :) Here's a link to their site: chillingham-castle.com I hate to see greenery growing all over the ruins like at Hepburn Bastle because it eventually destroys it. I wish whoever takes care of these areas would clear out the brush so they'll last longer and you can see more details. You really fine awesome places to camp.

Sadly I do know bud, i'm a professional historian and its places like this that give me a headache when I have to explain the actual history of the place to people who have been there and think what the owners have told them is gospel... Chillingham's not on its own, by far, in that regard.

Tower houses are a type of defensible house characteristic of the borderlands of England and Scotland, permanently occupied by the wealthier or aristocratic members of society. In times of war or unrest, it could have been used as a gail, if it can keep people out, it can keep people in. The lord would have used it as a power center to control the peasants.

When it comes to Chillingham Castle you need to take its history with a pinch of salt as the current owners have put out so much bullshit about the place to get gullible folk in it is unbelievable... haunted yes, magnificent yes, owners making up the history, sadly yes.

I've heard its haunted but never really researched the place. I can understand the owners hyping up the place to get people in but there is so much history and interest in old castles they don't really need to. ATB
