    The smell of rain on dry earth or stone is called petrichor, which I think translates to something like stone blood.

    You know you are a serious fish breeder when your family's food gets shoved to the side so your fish's food can have a nice play to stay. "Don't tell my family" cracked me up! Well done.

    I was having trouble with my grindals, I was feeding cat kibble and switched to cereal based on your vids and for a short while they went berserk! But then they seemed to decline again; just by coincidence I thought about feeding them some blended up veg scraps like you would for earthworms (no citrus, no onion) and they went berserk again. So I've found if I vary between protein food, grain food and vegetable food grindals seem to do a lot better, they seem to love the variety.

      I have a worm farm (red wigglers) that I feed my goldfish, oscar, severums, angelfish and a variety of other tropical fish from. The most nutritious, easiest and cheapest fish food.

    Your family must be shook watching this back, you used the refrigerator, the microwave, a casserole dish, and a fork, all from your kitchen where their food comes from. Don't get me wrong, my kitchen has been repurposed for my fish too, but I live alone.

      I do this too. XD My family gets mad and grossed out. What she said is real though. If you raise betta fish you have to raise their food too. I really didn't want to but realized its really useful because you have so many options of food to feed your fry.

    You can buy a wine cooler fridge if you need a separate cooling place. You can dial it to what the worms like too 57F - 70F and not worry about spoiled food.
    As for the daphnia, they can be easy and hard. I raise snails with the daphnia. The snails help clean up any excess food. I don't bother doing any water changes. I put in a handful of crushed coral for Calcium. If and when the daphnia crash, just leave it alone and they'll come back in a month.

    You forgot too add food for the worms. Dog food is ok but I find that useing wheat bread spread with 100 percent yogurt and yeast on top of it sliced in small pieces work a lot better the worms go after the yogurt and the yeast helps with the bacteria needed for the worms try it works faster than dog or cat food

    Never had much success with daphnia either. Black worms I found to be very easy to get and keep, but to be fair, I live right in California, the source of all black worms. I also don’t have a lot of fish, and small black worm cultures are easy to maintain.
    The easiest inadvertent cultures I’ve had though were detritus worms and seed shrimp.... happened by accident, but the fish love them all the same.

    Hi Simply betta
    My best advice for culturing whiteworms is to invest in a wine cooler. You could check Craigslist for cheap and affordable one. Additionally in your video you didn't mention foods you feed them. If you can use whole grain bread and kefur or plain yogurt with some nutritional yeast flakes seems to work best. As for sterilization of the soil imo its best to do it dry with no added water. After microwave or oven dry i then would but in fridge or wine cooler to allow it to get the temp as cultures. When I'm starting cultures i add spring or tank water with spray bottle. Best to have multiple cultures as you can harvest from 1 and let the others mature and have constant supply.
    Hope this helps .Goodluck

    • @silverapple3986
      @silverapple3986 5 років тому

      He is a tail biter. His fins must be heavy so he gave himself a fin cut (hair cut). XD Mine has the same problem. He was very beautiful when I bought him but now he hardly has any fin left. I recommend using Indian almond leaves. You can find them in a local fish store or online. They sell cheap if you buy a pack. Just add it to his water and his fins will heal over time. He will never look the same like he did before but he will be healthy again. Plus the leaves will prevent infection. Hope this helps. P.S. This weather is pretty bad too (COLD). I recommend if you haven't already. Add a heater to his tank.

    Ah the lovely scent of big piles of steaming dirt. Did that once in the oven for growing seeds...just...once. Because of that jewel of a memory I went with Coconut coir substrate when I did worms. Two questions; I bought a culture that was called "Room temperature white worms", what do you think that would be, regular white worms or Grindle worms? They do keep well at normal room temps. 2. How bad are the mites for your worm culture. One tub has some mites, but the fish eat them also.

      Once I get a healthy thriving culture going I'll show some different ways! You can swipe worms off the side of the bin with your fingers, or pick up clumps by hand because they'll all gather by the food. Some people put plastic mesh over the food - which the worms will crawl on it and people pick that up and dip in into a fish tank

    Put a small piece of food (I use cat food) with a piece of glass over the soil to collect the worms. I also put the culture on paper towels. What about brine shrimp??

    • @SimplyBetta
      @SimplyBetta  5 років тому +1

      Brine shrimp are great, but they're pretty small to be feeding adults

      Can you feed them to the fry?

    • @SimplyBetta
      @SimplyBetta  5 років тому +1

      @@usamachaudhri7993 Depends on the age of the fry. I could feed some smaller white worms to fry that were not tiny anymore, but grindal worms would be better because they're smaller

    Soil my dear, you are sterilizing soil. Dirt is what you sweep up in the garage and soil is is what plants and white worms live in,

      Actually this is soilless media. Soil is what is outside, soilless media is what you buy to put in pots to plant in. There's no soil in it at all.

    I never did get my grindal worm culture mite free. 😩😩 I ended up chucking them.

    • @SimplyBetta
      @SimplyBetta  5 років тому +1

      Dang! I would just make a new culture. Take some grindals out, rinse them to make sure they're mite-free, and make a new container of sterilized dirt and pop them in. I guess its too late for that though

      I just had a bad stretch like you did too really. I don't have any babies right now anyway. I enjoyed keeping them, and the mircoworms as well. I only have vinegar eels left now.
