Marcus Gilmore is one of the most organically fluid and creative drummers to come also endorse soulful grooves as a part of his vocabulary. Coming out of a hand drumming tradition may be his most significant resource for his ability to hold down a groove and solo in and out of time. Thanks for this important segment. Continue to inspire.
Excellent lesson -- I will start working on some of this material. After about 9 minutes, you got into some stuff which can easily be used or comping behind soloists when swinging in 5/8.
paradidd First of all, flattered! Max all day. Love that username btw. No wonder it was taken. I was gonna have to do Paradidd2, and I wasn't playing that;)
So when you're moving on to triplet based ideas, you're allowing the feet to pull towards triplets too? Is this a conscious choice? I'm still on the preliminary exercises, and I've tried to fight to keep my feet in straight eighths, but I can't help but feel like allowing the ostinato to pull is more musical.
Yea don't fight it! There are instances in which you should maintain that strict subdivision but this isn't one of them. If you watch Marcus' original, there's elasticity between the 8ths and triplets:)
Nathaniel Smith Oh yeah, he even falls out of the 5 cycle for a few seconds. I'll keep letting the shapes shift. I love that video, I had been obsessed with it and then this lesson of yours comes along. I've been looking for a good ostinato study. Great stuff as always!
ctdjazz Yup. I was also thinking about this, and I think one way musicians "fudge" that strict subdivision is with the whole "swing 8th" thing, where we're pretending the distance between every 8th is the same for convenience, but it's not really;) Kind of like Imaginary Numbers.
Steve Pruitt BAM! Cause I'm right-handed, killa, so my Bruce Lee s#$% is to practice everything LH lead. I'll let you know when it pays off. Chick still hasn't called. Maybe today... ;)
Hmmmm, never thought switching rudiments was that awkward... Switching to left handed lead on grooves, that's a whole other thang! Nice concepts though!
Steve Pruitt Aaah. Yea I guess I do play it a bit awkwardly. Work in progress! You'll have to show me some of your reverse-handed LH lead grooves sometime:)
Ah, by no means was that a dis brotha! I love your vids! Just tryin to learn and observe as well. Also, I CAN'T play reversed handed beats hahaha, or maybe I'm too lazy!
I miss this hoodie

Hey Nate, great stuff man. What is that wood accessory on your hi hat?
I think it's a string of shells much like what Marcus uses. Adds a nice color to the hihat

Just curious, why you starting rudiments left handed?
