    I play this song every New Year’s Day, it reminds me that whatever I did last year, good or bad is already in the past. That was then and there is only the now.
    Love Leonard, I’m so glad that I got to see him live in concert, his voice/understanding of the human condition will live on.

    I love the reference to Joan of Arc. I don’t know why but I find Leonard Cohen’s tenderness and intimacy are deeply moving. He sings like he was there in the army of Joan of Arc. A true poet transcends time. Sometimes the longing reaches across centuries.

    Imagine the mind that could write poetry like this. I try but I will never get close to anything like this. A very special person he was with unimaginable thought processes. I have been a fan since the first word he ever penned. RIP sir you are one with the universe that created you now.

    The rain falls down on last year's man,
    That's a Jew's harp on the table,
    That's a crayon in his hand.
    And the corners of the blueprint are ruined since they rolled
    Far past the stems of thumbtacks
    That still throw shadows on the wood.
    And the skylight is like skin for a drum I'll never mend
    And all the rain falls down amen
    On the works of last year's man.
    I met a lady, she was playing with her soldiers in the dark
    Oh one by one she had to tell them
    That her name was Joan of Arc.
    I was in that army, yes I stayed a little while;
    I want to thank you, Joan of Arc,
    For treating me so well.
    And though I wear a uniform I was not born to fight;
    All these wounded boys you lie beside,
    Goodnight, my friends, goodnight.
    I came upon a wedding that old families had contrived;
    Bethlehem the bridegroom,
    Babylon the bride.
    Great Babylon was naked, oh she stood there trembling for me,
    And Bethlehem inflamed us both
    Like the shy one at some orgy.
    And when we fell together all our flesh was like a veil
    That I had to draw aside to see
    The serpent eat its tail.
    Some women wait for Jesus, and some women wait for Cain
    So I hang upon my altar
    And I hoist my axe again.
    And I take the one who finds me back to where it all began
    When Jesus was the honeymoon
    And Cain was just the man.
    And we read from pleasant Bibles that are bound in blood and skin
    That the wilderness is gathering
    All its children back again.
    The rain falls down on last year's man,
    An hour has gone by
    And he has not moved his hand.
    But everything will happen if he only gives the word;
    The lovers will rise up
    And the mountains touch the ground.
    But the skylight is like skin for a drum I'll never mend
    And all the rain falls down amen
    On the works of last year's man.

      I think it's about choosing to destroy nature or go with nature. Progress isn't always positive, there's always a tension and battle between making ourselves - as a species - more comfortable and losing something naturally spiritual about ourselves. It's about the individual as an individual and about the individual in a society or in an army, where a well-meaning single soul can somehow become part of a deadly machine.

    Too dark. Disrespectful of women. A muse is something to be used not loved. Too dark. Some great songs though. rest in peace.

      This was written a long time ago,
      I'd like to see critics write a song & try to guess what society will be thinking
      & how it will be dissected by moral sensibilities with the unknown perceptions of future generations.

      @@amp279 Poetry will always stand the test of time. It reflects the writers perception of society not necessarily his own feelings or perceptions. His life did not reflect any disrespect of women despite the fact that his entire life savings was stolen by one. He was the last of his kind. There is no one that can take his place. When Bob Dylan goes an entire musical chapter will be closed never to return.
