R.I.P. Leonard Cohen, you truly understood the human condition, and I don’t believe the world will see another talent like you again. Thank you for everything 💔
From one that’s been there at one point of my life, it sums up completely what it feels like to contemplate suicide. Just devastating; I know he battled depression most of his life yet somehow he was able to survive into his 80’s. One day he said the depression just went away; which is exactly what happened with me in my early 50’s.

My grandfather introduced me to Leonard's music. He used to play them songs when I was a kid. When Leonard died grandpa said he wants to go to Montreal and sit on the porch of Leonard's house, he couldn't. He passed away a year ago. I'm.sure he met good old lenny in that tower of song!!! And yeah I'll always find peace in his music, perhaps even when y hair is grey... and I ache in the places I used to play. Love from India.
Life has two faces, a joyous one and a tragic one. Cohen presented both with equal intensity. If you have not done it yet, then I recommend that you read his novel, “Beautiful Losers.” It’s old now but has lost none of its poignancy or punch.
@@haythamabdel-qader6934 You are welcome! Cohen’s first novel is entitled “The Favourite Game.” He only wrote the two novels, to my knowledge, and “Beautiful Losers” is the better of the two (in my opinion). And then you have the books of poetry he published during his lifetime. After all, Leonard was primarily a poet who branched out now and then. Google can probably give you a list of his total output. I only need Google to help locate the few pieces that I’m still missing. Collecting is an obsession but you can’t always call it fun.
Leonard Cohen at Lissadell House was the musical experience of a lifetime. The term 'Legend' doesn't convey what he means to me. Ireland loved the man! Seán..🇮🇪☘😊

Judy Collins did a compelling version of this song on her mid-1960's album, "In My Life." The inclusion of that song, as well as a gorgeous version of Cohen's sunny, mystical "Suzanne," brought his work into the light in the U.S. and beyond. On her subsequent album, "Wildflowers," three of the ten tracks were Cohen originals. "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye," and "Sisters of Mercy" stood out strongly. Another Canadian poet/songwriter, Joni Mitchell, got a big boost from Collins on that same record with the inclusion of "Both Sides, Now" and "Michael From Mountains." I know, in my own case, these songs presented by Ms. Collins lit a bonfire of curiosity about those two artists, and by the time I entered college in 1967, Leonard's and Joni's debut albums were playing almost constantly on my cheap little turntable. Ironically, my Canadian roommate in the dorm for a brief period, was not much appreciative of his fellow countryman's talent in the case of Leonard Cohen. "Oh, no --- not Leonard the groaner!!" was sometimes his response to hearing the record start. LOL
Funny, I have listened to this many times over the years and only today did I listen close enough to realize this was a song about contemplating suicide. Yet it was only a "dress rehearsal".

This in my humble opinion is Leonard’s best album. I also love the one no one talks about - Recent Songs - which I won in 1980 at the local disco for coming second in a fucking mini skirt competition! I was just dressed as I always was when on a night out. I’d no idea a competition was going on. But I did accept the offer of a free album. The DJ offered me ABBA etc., but I said no, I want Leonard Cohen. I had to educate him a bit. But tbh he came the next week with Recent Songs for me. It was maybe then I only realised they fuckin spoke French in Montreal! Anywhere they speak French is ok with me. Un Canadien Etranger. Remember it all too well. Some local fucker called Owen Walsh came over to me the night I came second. Said I want to shake your hand. I said why? He said, for being the woman to reintroduce mini skirts to Magherafelt. Now that I’m thinking about it, the long legged winner; no one knew who she was. The DJ must’ve brought her in from Belfast. Probably his fuckin gf at the time. Anyways, I got a Cohen album for going out that night. Would’ve cost five times the entrance fee.
First heard this by Judy Collins, always wanted to sing this one, dificult chords. Here Cohen seems to be channeling a little of Dylan's delivery. His debut album I have listened to hundreds of times. I'm new to this one.

Four o'clock in the afternoon and I didn't feel like very much. I said to myself, "Where are you golden boy, where is your famous golden touch?" I thought you knew where all of the elephants lie down, I thought you were the crown prince of all the wheels in Ivory Town. Just take a look at your body now, there's nothing much to save and a bitter voice in the mirror cries, "Hey, Prince, you need a shave." Once there was a path and a girl with chestnut hair, and you passed the summers picking all of the berries that grew there; there were times she was a woman, oh, there were times she was just a child, and you held her in the shadows where the raspberries grow wild. And you climbed the twilight mountains and you sang about the view, and everywhere that you wandered love seemed to go along with you. That's a hard one to remember, yes it makes you clench your fist. And then the veins stand out like highways, all along your wrist. And yes it's come to this, it's come to this, and wasn't it a long way down, wasn't it a strange way down? You can still find a job, go out and talk to a friend. “Israel, and you who call yourself Israel, the Church that calls itself Israel, and the revolt that calls itself Israel, and every nation chosen to be a nation - none of these lands is yours, all of you are thieves of holiness, all of you at war with Mercy. The poem continues: The Covenant is broken, the condition is dishonored, have you not noticed that the world has been taken away? You have no place, you will wander through yourselves from generation to generation without a thread. Therefore you rule over chaos, you hoist your flags with no authority, and the heart that is still alive hates you, and the remnant of Mercy is ashamed to look at you. You decompose behind your flimsy army, your stench alarms you, your panic strikes at love. The land is not yours, the land has been taken back, your shrines fall through open air, your tablets are quickly revised, you bow down in hell beside your hired torturers, and still count your battalions and crank out your marching songs. Your righteous enemy is listening. He hears your anthems full of blood and vanity, and your children singing to themselves. He has overturned the vehicle of nationhood, he has spilled the precious cargo, and every nation he has taken back.” really? Leonard a zionist? Laughable.
this one for me is a bit too much of Cohen going into Dylan's Blonde on Blonde type of strung out whining and complaining, not my favorite look for either artist, but if others find it of use, so be it

His swan's song
One of the funniest songs ever written...
Zionist with incredible lyrics and great compositions. I wish he had better political world view.
“Israel, and you who call yourself Israel, the Church that calls itself Israel, and the revolt that calls itself Israel, and every nation chosen to be a nation - none of these lands is yours, all of you are thieves of holiness, all of you at war with Mercy.
The poem continues:
The Covenant is broken, the condition is dishonored, have you not noticed that the world has been taken away? He has overturned the vehicle of nationhood, he has spilled the precious cargo, and every nation he has taken back.”
really? Leonard a zionist? Laughable.
Leonard was jewish, but he wasn't a zionist.
Stop it! keep your politics and bigotry out of here please
this one for me is a bit too much of Cohen going into Dylan's Blonde on Blonde type of strung out whining and complaining, not my favorite look for either artist, but if others find it of use, so be it
