Yeah, we had some background noise on this one… even using lavalier mics and with Adobe’s noise reduction plugin. If anyone knows how the hell broadcasters deal with this, I’m all ears. Cheers! Mick

Thanks so much for answering my question relating the difference between the vibe-vibrato and chorus-vibrato. That was a great explanation. Thanks for teaching us so much about effects and sound. I work as and study to become a sound engineer, but having you guys explain everything as guitarists would make sense of stuff makes it easier for me to grasp all the concepts and translating it to a live show or a studio recording. My brain has a rule: if in doubt, picture the signalchain like a pedalboard. That makes life so much easier.
    Cheers!

I just realised why I like your show so much: you're not just teaching me facts about guitar kit, you're teaching me how to *think* about my gear. Watching your digressions is watching someone think out loud about the sounds they are making, and seeing that process is proving ever so valuable. Developing that cognitive toolkit will hopefully mean that I can hone in on the sounds that move me much more reliably. And maybe even eventually allow me to find new favourite sounds that I hadn't considered before.
I've got a long way to go obviously, but I feel like at the end of that path is a whole world of sound that at present is hidden in deep shadow, such that all I'm currently doing is fumbling blindly in the dark and occasionally stumbling over the sounds that bring me joy. You folk have a torch and know where to point it, and very much appreciate you letting me watch you do so.
    Cheers lads!

Thank you Dan, for reminding me why I used to repatch my Boss PN-2 Tremolo/Pan in the middle of a gig. It was to put the tremolo after the delay for the one song where I wanted a defined tremolo sound while still using delay. I knew there was a reason, but I just couldn't remember what it was.
And thanks for the lovely birthday wishes and the great advice on phase!

Hey guys - idea for you guys on a segment call “No rules”. So many questions each week around signal chain order. I know you guys typically will pepper this in with various topics. Would it be worth doing a segment every once in awhile showing your experiences and discussion on there are no rules - and showing the flexibility of commonly used pedals in different order. Maybe do a poll like you did on the worse pedal platform to see what people are struggling with the most in the signal chain. Thanks guys! Keep on keeping on! My favorite channel by far!

Hi Mick & Dan, I just wanted to post my thanks to Katherine for being so lovely in helping my wife out with the TPS shirt order that was lost due to a postal strike here in Canada. Katherine was really great about it and sent a replacement that arrived last week, as well as emailing us a hand-written card from Mick & Dan wishing us a Happy Christmas and New Year which I received as a special IOU Christmas Day (thanks fellas!). Now I'm the proud owner of a TPS shirt AND the autographs of my two favourite UA-cam tone hounds. Much appreciated! All the best, Rob in Ottawa.

"house bulbs blowing" fun tangent. Your bulbs have been screwed in too tightly over the years causing the tab in the bottom of the socket to become depressed thereby not making full contact with the bottom of the bulb. This means that rather than a solid "Metal On Metal" (Anvil!! LOL) connection there is actually a tiny arc happening inside the socket causing your bulbs to run hot and blow early. Kill the power at the breaker, take a pair of needle-nose pliers and gently bend the tab outwards so that it makes solid contact when a bulb is in the socket and problem solved. Great show as always guys. Thanks!

Dotted Eighth Explanation: This is best explained with a drawing... which I can't do in the comments....
For me it works like this:
    Think in 16ths, I play every 2nd 16th: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9...
The dotted 8th delay then delays each note by 3 16ths, so end up playing on the even 16ths : 4, 6, 8, 10, 12...
If you like, it fills in the gaps.

If you're after a fast, easy way to get things perfectly in phase in your DAW, try the auto-align plugin. I can spend 10 minutes trying to nudge two channels into perfect phase or 10 seconds auto-aligning them and it ALWAYS sounds fuller. Works great on multi-mic stuff too. There's probably a free demo version but honestly it's some of the best money you'll spend.

Much simpler way to explain dotted eighth in relation to quarter notes is that the dotted eighth counted out loud lands on the "ah" in the count " one ee and ah"
This method is how I and many fellow musicians I know were able to consistently achieve dotted eighth on the DL4, which famously did not have any tap subdivisions.

    20:50 On Gemma's statement.
I've been stuck in that same rut, plenty of times. But when I applied the Uni-Vibe, to some original music in bands, stacking it with the right delay, I've found unique sounds with it.
I use a Caroline Kilobyte, which has a great havoc switch(immediate oscillation), to get some unique tones, and then for really Trippy stuff, I'll put a Boss DD-3 after, to get the more bright delays bouncing.

I think the person asking about the 20w and 60w situation was implying an external attenuator, that way both amps would be cooking, operating in their sweet spots. The question could be reworded as: do transformers for larger amps have different inherent frequencies, and perhaps does using an attenuator change the tone (see Johan Segeborns attenuator videos)

Hi guys, I want to mirror what everyone else has said here KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR DOING. You are providing real world advice on real world gear in a unique way. No one else does it in a way you do. You compare usually to gear we own so we can relate and evaluate what you demo. What I’m trying to say is when you do demo gear you tend to pitch it against alternatives that we may own so it gives us a gauge to compare. Then also you provide banter with real educational informative help. So don’t doubt what your doing or worry to much about target audience. I speak for many, no one else does what you do or even comes close so chin up dudes, you’re doing it right. To my questions, do you know of wireless transmitters that work with germanium pedals? Are the £1000 wireless systems any better at driving germanium pedals? Curious to PNP and NPN transistors, In a circuit do they flip phase? So, you have 2 fuzz faces 1 PNP loaded and the other NPN would the output phase be the same? Cheers guys

I think it would be really inspirational to follow you on those learning curves. There's an infinity of uses of guitar pedals for a guitar but a) you should follow these rabbit holes on camera so we can learn how you learn which will help us ask better questions b) use pedals for other things IE synths drums mixes etc c) reasons to mod pedals/history of pedal mods d) amps that you hate would be fun to watch you use so that we can see what you can do with them. Dudes! I had the new year blues too, thanks for helping me figure out what it was! Great VCQ. I have a question about the gig you did: Given what you prepped for mentally, pedal board/amp wise, did all go according to plan? What came up or what did you learn for next time.

Could you guys please do an overdrive and distortion pedal shoot out? The best of the best and current popular overdrive and distortion pedals for 2019. That would be fantastic.

Good explanation of the dotted 8th. I like the 'bouncy' feeling it gives to playing 8th note arpeggios or rhythmic parts. Check out early U2 or 'Run Like Hell' from Pink Floyd.

Ryan at Bootstrap Pickups in Ohio custom winds excellent pick ups including p-90's in humbucker size. You just need to order a custom p-90 in the regular soapbar size and add a note at checkout that you want it to be in the "Skookum-90" format. He'll wind to your exact specs for a crazy low price for the quality. Going for more of a vintage output, I had him make an Alnico 3, 43AWG 7800 wind with about 7.8k output for an Epi LP Jr. (for a whopping $24.99) and it really sings!

Dan - for humbucker size P90, check out Railhammer Nuevo 90s or Huevo 90s. They do just what you’re describing, tight lows, full highs (and hum cancelling!)

Any chance of doing a Fulltone Fulldrive only episode. It really was one of the very first boutique overdrives. I’ve owned all of them at some point except the original silver ones and the new FD-1 and FD-2 v2. There’s enough models of the thing to warrant a show I would think. The Fulldrive 3 has 3 versions itself with the original orange Custom Shop, a true bypass and now a buffered version.

The Mesa F-30 and F-50 are identical save for the EL84 v. 6L6 power sections. And my answer to that question would be, a 50 W amp attenuated to 15 W doesn't sound like a 15 W amp unattenuated. You may or may not like what you get.
In my personal experience, attenuation sounds good down to about -12 dB (depending on the attenuator. I've used the THD Hot Plate and the Groove Tubes Speaker Emulator II), and anything less sounds terrible. So, if you attenuate a 50 W amp by -6 dB (down to 12.5 W), it will sound really good. Or, if you take my F-50 and pop in a pair of THD Yellowjackets with EL84s (as I sometimes do), it will also sound good, but it will still sound *different* to an F-30.

Would you please consider working through a pedal like the TC Elec Dream Scape. It has a Vibe, Flang & Chorus settings (actually 2 of each setting) to determine "how true" each of the effects are compared to a dedicated pedal for each effect? This is in response to the 1st question from Frank, Tim & Tom. Many Thanks, Rob

    Humbucker to complement a P-90
Dan, it could be worth checking this out in your search for that pickup to go in the bridge of your Huber guitar.
The Yamaha Pacifica VFM-611 has Seymour Duncan pickups, and I find that the humbucker (Seymour Duncan Custom 5 TB-14) they put in there goes really well with the neck P-90 (Seymour Duncan SP90-1n).
It's not too hot but neither is it too weak on the low end.
Flipping the selector gives a tonal variation rather than any massive volume change
It's also it is splittable, and a fairly strong split in single mode to boot, giving you another useful pickup combination in the same guitar.

Dan/Mick (Hello), Love your show! But as a drummer, you killing me with your explanation of the dotted 8th. Explain it using the 16th note counting 1-e-&-a method. It's much more transparent. A dotted 8th would be counted 1 . . a . . & . . e . . 4 . . a etc. As my pops used to say, if you can sing it, you can play it. P.S. if you ever need a drummer sub for TPS tangent band or ever come to Philadelphia, hit me up!

The dotted eighth thing is *very* easy to confuse with a quarter note triplet. At 120 bpm, a dotted eighth is 375 ms, while a quarter triplet is 333 ms, and the faster the tempo, the less the difference. Depending on the time signature and feel, one will work better or worse than the other.

IRs is an interesting and useful topic. It doesn't have to be all that complicated if you don't make your own IRs but purchase them. This is my application and I use it with real amps as well as plugins. The consistency and simplicity compared to hooking up 2-3 mics, setting gain levels and mixing.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  5 років тому +1

Yeah exactly. That's basically what I'm saying. Choose a couple that you like and learn how to get the best from them. Problem for me is that if I don't have feedback through a guitar speaker I just can't feel it. Which to be fair is fine for most tracking work.

I also find that when switching from a tele or strat to my sg junior mid gig to get a certain rock sound that all of a sudden there’s a lack of attack to the notes and a new compression in the upper mids. I’ve backed the volume all the way to 5 or 6 on the sg to mitigate that issue and to get top end sparkle back. But I’ve had to set the gain on almost minimum with some overdrive pedals when switching to the sg junior from a fender in order to maintain a similar edge of break up tone that will cut in the mix. In this regard, I think it’s often a case of context. I’ve noticed it more so live, and that would make sense because that’s when I’m most concerned about cutting through the mix. Example: when I owned the dls mkiii, I’d run it in super bass mode and the strat sounded glorious for Jimi rhythm tones with the gain at 10 to noon; then I’d switch to the sg junior and sometimes I’d run the gain at absolute minimum and volume on the pedal at unity so as to not get any more compression from the front end of the amp also. Problem basically solved.

This is so interesting Craig. I think it's why I find humbuckers and P90s hard work after so many years of single coils. Mick here. Clearly neither is 'better' but there's obviously something in the response differences that we should all understand. Cheers!

I don't know if you are aware of Jetter pedals. I just received their Gold 45/100 and I must say that it is, by far, the best Plexi pedal of them all. Quite inexpensive, I got a gently used one for US$100 . Simple , three knobs (right Mick?) and through a crystal-clean amp it can go from very subtle, barely crunched (right Dan?) to cranked hot-rod Marshall. Best of all, it uncannily replicates a JTM45 better than anything else I have heard. Just check one out and I think you will be very pleased with it.
