    Love red garnet! Got a lot from Bancroft when I was child.

      I have had a difficult time finding it around Bancroft, but it is there for sure. Some that I have seen harvested by others was nice and gemmy.

      They all made it thru the winter fine, but this spring a female fox took them all one by one. On the positive note, I now get to see the pups once in a while and they are much quieter.

      @@meMinerhey buddy i'm from the UK and looking for a nice red garnet like the one at 0:45 at the 5 o clock position (bottom right of the pan) same sort of size and ideally the typical dodecahedron shape with diamond pattern etching on, do you have any i could possibly purchase and if so how i can go about contacting you! thanks buddy!

    I tumbled some garnets they took almost 14 months to complete ( large batch ) the sapphires I tumbled also took 14 months and they both made some seriously pretty fish tank stones.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому +1

      The purists hate the idea of adding anything to the stones. However, I like the effect. It will wash off if you change your mind later.

      meMiner which armor all the glass , the leather, or the wax.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому +1

      I just use the original. It was for leather and pleather. I think the glass stuff is a cleaner. I have never tried the wax, but it might be interesting.

    I have some of these and I have been debating on whether to tumble them or polish on a wheel. If I were to tumble them I would leave them in the 1st time for at least 5 days.

    Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear about your chickens. Nature can be cruel but it's the food chain and necessary for their survival. I don't have that problem. But all the wild animals eat all my garden flowers. Some lilies I never saw them bloom for years. Love them and hate them at the same time.
    The ROCKS, it's quite a process to get the look your wanting to achieve isn't For now, I use mine for broken colored glass to make it look like sea glass. It's fun to see the stages to it's perfection. But worth it. What kind/ brand is your tumbler? I got mine at Harbor Freight I have nothing to compare. Yours could be a better / faster option. Thanks, Rock On !!!!

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому

      The fox was quick, so the chickens did not suffer. I don't miss the noise. It was getting insane. I could not walk outside without them screaming at me.
      My two good tumblers are Lortone. There is nothing wrong with a Harbor Freight. I don't like some other brands such as the ones with plastic barrels. I tried them and they all failed after a short while.

    What are the whitish chalk shaped items?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому +1

      Those are ceramic media. They are a filler when my rocks wore down too far. ie. A tumbler should be at least half full of rock to be effective, so a filler like ceramic media or plastic beads is used. If the tumbler is too empty, the rocks don't roll correctly and therefore don't polish effectively.

    • @20greeneyes20
      @20greeneyes20 6 років тому

      meMiner Thanks I didn't know about filler rocks to help it do its job. Hmmmm great hint !

    Hey I really like the vid! It’s cool to see what that whole process looks like as I’ve never polished any myself.
    I was wondering about what you did around 10:20 into the video, when you threw away a couple samples because they weren’t garnet. Without having seen them myself, I can’t really tell, but I was thinking they could’ve been other less common kinds of garnet like spessartine? I guess that leased to the question, do you know of the main 6 types of garnet?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому

      I very easily could have thrown away a rock that should have kept, especially when trying to also use the camera at the same time. The site where I collected was mostly Almandine, but it was also known for Staurolite and I suspect I was too careless for find/ID it. I hope to go back this summer. Your comment got me to thinking....

    Who asks more questions than me. What would happen if after the first stage I reused the medium with added new medium to another batch of first stage rocks?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  5 років тому

      You want to add medium to a used stage 1 slurry and start with new rocks? Why not add coarse grit to the old slurry? Medium will work, but take longer.

    I see chitoyency (sh-toy-an-c) on a few stones...if you grind off the crud and polish on the chitoyent face you should pull up 4 legs...6 legs are rare but do occur...

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 років тому

      I know that as "cats eye" . It is also on red garnet?

  • @MrSlartiB

    rewatching this as I'm done stage one and I'm not pleased with what I'm seeing. I've tumbled them in stainless steel shot for a day, now a week in stage 1 grit with ceramic media... Will see... :) My stage 1 grit was thick and darker...

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  4 роки тому

      If your slurry is getting thick, you are really wearing out the garnet. Move to a finer grit, unless you want the rock to round more.

      I have to go back to that site in the spring to see if I can get some better gem grade material. I am told that it is there, but the majority are not great for cabbing.

    • @coldshot5555
      @coldshot5555 6 років тому +1

      I can tell you an easy way to ID a star...just buy some heavy mineral oil and put a drop on the garnet to form a little lens and if a star shows up that's good and it will cut a star if faced up...naturally if no star shows up try another spot on he stone...and if no stars show up then go to the next stone...p.s. lets subscribe to each other...
