saw someone talking about that the other day on the FB page. Glad to see a vid about it. Keep up the great work man. Love your ski. Ive got a 84 550, 78 440, 82 440 i think, and a 88 650. Keep the old school skis rocking
@@motorandoutdoor8137 for sure 100%. I've watched almost all of your videos so far especially since I am in the middle of a full rebuild on the 550. I have thought about doing UA-cam vids about these skis too just have not gotten around to starting it.
Thats bad ass I've got a 89 ive done a reed motor swap but have recently ran into bearing issues on the drive shaft any tips for removing the impeller from the shaft
I agree, I’d prefer gear oil too, given the task expected of it and the maintenance it won’t get. 70w isn’t so heavy as to be a big enough difference over ATF compared to grease.
"Grease causing drag" really?? Seems like bs and automatic transmission fluid instead of grease or oil or nothing at all seems pretty odd. Absent further explanation my conclusion is someone lied to you .
Go in any group for 550s and ask about the banzai mod or just use google and look it up 550 guys talk about it from time to time. People also ran t fittings into the coupler cover and sprayed water to their housings to cool it. All kinds of little strange stuff that was done.
@@motorandoutdoor8137 Do you not need to turn the seals with this modification? As standard, they are installed in such a way as to allow air and lubricant to pass through. Won't this cause an ATF leak?
Unfortunately I can’t answer that because an old head put this together and I’ve never dig into these. It’s had atf in it for years now and it hasn’t leaked a drop yet🤷♂️

Thanks man I appreciate it! And vintage is the way to go🤙

Nice! And yeah it takes a little bit of extra time but it’s fun to do.
Ran that stuff in the late 80s .pull the bolts and slap it in .motors out already .really frees up the rotational energy .nice zipp

It’s one of the few things I haven’t dealt with on these is that impeller being stuck on the drive shaft. So I’m not really sure unfortunately.
Did you ever have issues with oil leaks ive read that can be a problem
Joel387 suzuki as in the bearing housing itself leaking?
@@motorandoutdoor8137 yea the seal around the shaft
Joel387 suzuki haven’t noticed a problem with it yet no.
Seems like There is a thousand better lubricants than ATF?! Redline 70w for one.
You want a light lube .possibly even synthetic motor oil

@@motorandoutdoor8137 Can confirm. I built skis for a small team in the 90s.

@@motorandoutdoor8137 I'm just assembling my js550, I wanted to do this modification but I don't know how to put on sealants. Greetings from Poland.
