The wider you go away from the body of the kayak the more stable it will get with the same size float too. So if you added a 1 foot length of pipe horizontal in between the two curved conduit pieces, youll find its even harder to tip. Leverage is key
Exactly. And if they’re further out they don’t have to be submerged, or even in, the water when underway and not tilted. The design in this video increases drag WAY too much and giving very little stabilization as can be seen by how deeply they sink with just a bit of off center weight.
@Hhop1620 yeah I'm very clumsy. I was reaching to undo a snag while I was fishing. I think I'll pass with yaks and what not. Still fun to learn though.
I like the stabilizer build. Very simple but looks quite effective. I once sat in a Sit-a-top kayak. I quickly learned how unstable they are compared to the Sit-IN kayak I eventually went with, which is an Ascend AS-12. It's so stable that as long as you keep your arms and legs over the boat, you can lean to either side and it won't go any further than about 15-20 degrees and it stops. It's a lot like standing in a bucket and trying to lift yourself up by the handle. The main reason is that when you sit in this particular kayak, your butt is actually sitting below the waterline. So when you're leaning over and the boat won't allow you to lean any further, the boat is telling you that you can't do that, because you are actually trying to lift yourself out of the water. So, it's the most stable set-up you can have. "But"... I am going to build your stabilizer system for mine anyway, because every once in awhile, I'd like to stand up, so I can look around, stretch my legs or maybe get my lure a bit further away. Thanks for the video. The stabilizer build will really come in handy.
Great Mod. I own a pelican catch 120. Love it but weighs a ton. Hard to fine the perfect kayak. I guess we would need to own 5-6 for each scenario that we would want to paddle in. Adding the stabilizers certainly gives you more range. As always great vid. Would of been more entertaining if you went tits up in the water. Lol.
You’re welcome Monica. If you check out a couple of my recent videos you’ll see that I use it all the time (when I take my dog). It works incredibly well👍
What a great idea! This is something that I will definitely try. Makes just getting in and out of kayak so much easier. Finally can use boat bumpers that have been sitting in my shed! LOL.
My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
Nice video very well explined.Friend do you think is much more stable if its wider? I have a kayak for two people and we fish in the Ocean do you think it would be more estable??
I wonder if the small foam surfboard for kids would work as well? You could screw bolts ride into them, besides they are cheap! And longer as well so maybe two small 24 inch form would work well with a greater water contact surface… ?
Another great video Chuck.. I biult almost the exact out riggers for my 12 ft Pelican..only thing I did different was to use ABS pipe for all of it and I fill the inside of the pipe with spray foam..make it super stable.. Well done there buddy :) i like the idea of the round bumpers ..may make another now :)
Yes I think a few people have mentioned the same....I was really surprised at how well they worked....most things I make don't work out that well lol. Take care bud👍
Great video ! Now I have to figure out how to adapt this to my Eagle Talon ...Thanks The only difference I would do is raise the height of the Buoys up so they are just about out of the water so less drag and when you do lean the Buoys will stabilize you Great job Sir..Just subscribed
the 2 floats are in the water all the time... does that increase drag? do you notice? what if they were a couple of inches above the water, instead? .. after all the boats floats ok without them;
There isn't much "tipping room" thus if they were above the water it would be too late as it were before they provided the appropriate buoyancy to keep you upright. The drag is surprisingly low👍
That's neat. I am cultivating this new fishing hobby and I am looking for a fishing Kayak or smallest kayak so that it's easy to carry on my SUV's roof rack.. I was thinking of something similar , like tying up two kayaks for more stability and can support my dog too, but at the same time wanted to keep it as simple as possible. SO, I am thinking of tying some tubes to the side of the kayak. Has anyone done that ? And how well that can work ? Thank you, I subscribed.
Tubes of any sort would definitely help. Of course, the further away from the kayak the better. The challenge is finding that balance between obstruction of paddling and movement, and stability. I’ve used these many times since and find them really good. Sure, it slows me down a bit, but if I’m just drifting around a pond doing some fishing, then stability outweighs the need for fast movements etc.
I can hear your Irish ancestors speak through every so often)) I am born and bred in Co. Meath and sometimes you sound like my friend across the road)) Nice idea. I'll give it a lash myself.
Another great video and tip. I own a Colman scanoe with motor and of course very stable but I am very limited to accessing distant ponds in the woods. I have no interest in tipping into water with an tippy kayak but this may just be the answer for me to get on these distant ponds. Thanks!
Nice job , I did something similiar using small boat fenders , Sitting just above water line , I operate 14 footers , motorized , heavy , , I tipped kayak few times , never in deep , always at boat ramp , feel myself falling grab yak I'm in water , kayak tipped over , This happened recently when I had outriggers installed and kayak stayed boyant . You gave me an idea using electrical piping , stronger then pcv , I fish at times under bridges and fenders bang into concrete , pcv snaps easily , I stopped gluing , using cotter pins this way when pcv snaps comes apart easily
@Chuck Porter - Everything Outdoors well I got a 12ft yak, so I went with 26x8" pontoons, and they extend out just over 3 ft. Also, i have a trolling motor so im not too concerned about the paddlig. I'll let you know how it goes.
love the design concept but i noticed how the pipe attached to the kayak was still very moveable may i suggest a possible future design add for keeping them stable so it make it more sturdy by adding a small support systm on the outside from the kayak to like the middle of the support joint for extra stability of the pipe so it doesnt wobble as much, but thank you for sharing this i was just looking for stabilizers for my kayak cause i have recently gotten into it thanks to a friend of mine

Just a little fyi. If you are ever in water that has Gators, leave the dog at home. Trust me on this one. Nice build. Definitely will make something similar for mine.
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors I built some for my sentinel 100x angler, and they are a game changer. Just giving you heads up if you are ever down here in Florida. Another plus is that the outriggers do make you look bigger. Thanks for the video.
Good morning Chuck. Phase Two. Electric motors and propellers in each one. Phase three, turn them into fish seeking torpedoes. Just a thought. Looks very effective. Have seen bigger versions on canoes as well. Happy paddling.
Great idea, but I would get laughed right off the lake if I put training wheels on my boat. lol I would never try a kayak becuz they are so tippy but that's a game changer. Good job.
haha! Yes, I've heard them called that as well lol. I will use them only on the days when Im feeling like I'm not so stable! Especially the days I take Willow with me👍
I enjoy mine..but I no longer get into water on my fishing trips..when I just want to get around without the hassle of dumping my things I use mine also and you can remove them while on the water and secure them on your yak
Thanks for the idea.. I'm 289lbs and with gear and high flow river it fun but don't like the very cold water when the ice run down. I'm new to kayaks and like alway I like the mod my ring so it me. Looking to mod one for the ocean and river..
ABsolutely and thanks Barry. My gopro battery died afterwards when I got back to shore.... I played around enough that I tipped it over (in two feet of water of course). To my surprise it tipped back over easier than I thought. That may be just a fluke to my design. I guess in a survival situation though, the kayak (even though upside down) at least would have both the bouyancy of the kayak plus the stabilizers to help keep you afloat until you managed to get to shore or help arrived. Appreciate your take on this bud. Great observation👍
Love the idea, thank you for sharing. I will (I think) trial a longer arm to give it extra width/stability. Loving the removable clip idea, this gives me the flexibility to switch between long or short arms
Is good..but I rather put a straight pvc rod .with the boat fenders .and strapped hard ..I don't trust in bolts attached to the kayak ..you notice that .is going to make pressure to the hull
Love the video but word of caution; I built a set almost identical to these and cracked/ripped the hull on my pelican pretty badly. One of them just barely caught a stump just under the water and ripped out of the hull where attached, and that sent a split down the hull that could not be repaired. Tight lines!
I bought a sit on top instead of a sit inside and mine us super tippy. Im honestly regretting not buying a sit inside. It felt much more stable and paddled straighter
Apologies if you've answered this, but what was the weight capacity of your kayak before you added the stabalizers? Thank you for the video, definitely doing this!
I was pleasantly surprised with the speed at which I could still paddle with the stabilizers down. Of course, they are quickly removed with the pins if I were to want to cross a piece of water faster. It’s a win win and I’m after using them many many times since
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors I noticed that the buoys come in 16" and 27". What size do you use and what are your thoughts on the need and the difference between the 2 sizes ? Thank you.
When you stood up to paddle for a bit on your feet ... that your usual paddle length seemed a bit short for the standing position. What if your were to figure a way to cut your paddle in two and add a length of pvc pipe into the middle of the paddle in a way that you could take our and put back in depending on if you wanted to paddle sitting down or standing up ... kind of like the long paddles that the ocean paddle boarders use while they're standing. Love the creativity of your new stabilizers !
Great idea Chuck works really well too.. Chuck keep an eye on the PVC joints abs glue dont stick well to PVC. You can buy pvc glue just like the abs stuff.. just a thought.. now you might not have a issue.. take care thanks for sharing looking forward to seeing some Lakers or big brook trout hauled up over the side of that Kyak buddy. Stay safe.
Thanks for the info Pat!!! Its the first time I've ever used the electrical conduit for anything. I'll keep checking them now that you've mentioned it. Thanks so much!👍
Call me an idiot if I am one but what if you did this exact same thing and also added some at the front that were a bit closer together? Might be really easy to stand then.
I found the back ones made all the difference in the world and so I’m thinking front ones may just be an overkill. The goal is to increase stability and interfere minimally with manoeuvrability 👍
Great video and concept! An improvement comes to mind, bare with me, hopefully I can articulate what I am thinking. Have the float on each side each part way (half?) out of the water at 'stable'. That way when tipping too far to the right for example right side float will submerge more and therefore will add resistance to that direction and the left float coming out of the water therefore adding less resistance and therefore BOTH will help stability. Right now both are submerged and providing equal force upward and doing little by way of promoting stability. Another thing is the further you have said floats out from kayak the more stability you have exponentially. Obviously there is a size/portability factor and you don't want 20' floats on each side haha Hope you don't mind a little feedback. Would love to see you incorporate my first suggestion especially and see/compare the difference. Id bet it would be significant :)
Hey buddy. I experimented with these stabilizers in height only. I found that this height was the best for my weight etc. It really isn’t a huge difference in speed given I’m usually fishing most times anyhow. I didn’t experiment with the width, although, at the width I have here it works well enough I can stand up no problem 👍👍
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors Glad you found the modification that works best for you. I just got into kayaking and am loving the inspiration for doing custom modifications! :)

275 pounds 👍
Are you from the Newfoundland area?
Born and bred in Newfoundland. 👍👍
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors one of my favorite accents👍👍
Instead of that bumper, you can use a soda bottle.
Do you have to put more effort into paddling now? What, if the stabilizers were not submerged?
I was pleasantly surprised with the speed at which I could still paddle with the stabilizers down. Of course, they are quickly removed with the pins if I were to want to cross a piece of water faster. It’s a win win and I’m after using them many many times since
Can you do this for a sit in kayak ? Where would you attach the fishing pole holder? I love love this set up! 😁👍👏
Yes you can! I have a friend who did it to his. He has fishing holders in his kayak as well
That was pretty great to design such a stabilizer I would never have come up with that one .awesome job. MY NEXT JOB .THANKS .👍👍
Glad you liked it Don! Tks again buddy👍
Brilliant !
Thanks Dave👍
Great video. Love your dog ♥️
Where did you get the floats?
I bought the floats at canadian tire, however they are available at most boating/marinas stores
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors I noticed that the buoys come in 16" and 27". What size do you use and what are your thoughts on the need and the difference between the 2 sizes ? Thank you.
I used 16’s. Absolutely sufficient. 👍
Excellent idea. I just got Pelican 100x and plan on building this! Thanks!
You’re welcome. Good luck Nicholas👍
I have a short paddle myself and I’ve considered doing something like this to save money on buying a longer paddle. It’s a great idea
Thanks so much!👍
What a trusting Dog.
I LOVE This video. Simplest best design ive seen!
Tks Riley. It works well. Here’s a fishing trip I took with Willow shortly after (using the new stabilizers) 👍 ua-cam.com/video/-rpIA_TVxSA/v-deo.html
That is so smart
Obviously there is a size/portability factor and you don't want 20' floats on each side haha
Hope you don't mind a little feedback.
