Taxiing into the Terminal at Udon from BKK. Seeing the Tumbleweed and for a moment the airport looks derelict. Soi Samphan has the odd decent restaurant. But the bars are fairly uninspiring. It is what it is, a 100% Euro, US, Aussie enclave, Night markets are great. But I felt it was a city without a soul. With a Thai partner and passable Thai different story probably. Much preferred Khon Kaen, which has a far more cosmopolitan edge to it. The Saturday night Nong Khai market along the Mekong river is very special. Enjoyed Issan, lovely people who live a simple life scratching a living. This is Proper Thailand.
Last time I was in Thailand and wanted to stay more than 30 days - I just went to the immigration office and paid 2000 baht for an additional 30 days. It was in Udon Thani in November 2023. But I’ve heard that you can stay up to 60 days now instead of 30 (if you’re from one of the countries that had 30 days visa free entry before). So, is the visa run or crossing the border still something you need to do?
I have always enjoyed udon but I have friends nearby. Nan is a lovely city but I'm not sure it's your cup of tea. If you're not keen how udon looks. I'm not sure the rest of isaan is for you. You'll not be getting all that junk food in the villages or much nightlife. It's a very peaceful way of life. It's a nice different experience. But if you make no effort in learning a bit of Thai you will struggle. Seems your biggest issue is not sorting your visa issues out and keep moving around due to this. Maybe time to settle down and get off holiday mode now if you plan on staying in Thailand.
Seems like a decent place to visit. It looks to be a decent shopping mall, good food, a few bars for a cold beer and small talk and, it looks like some good produce stands. What more could an older guy want, either for living there or for just a few days while passing thru. Seems decent.
Nice video Eddy and never a more accurate appraisal of Udon Thani. But in all honesty, they are slowing improving the place with UD Town, Soi Sanpan, Central Plaza and the Lake so maybe in another twenty years they will get around to the rest of the place :-)
Eddie you need to get out of the towns and cities and go into the villages because you are not seeing the true Thailand with its beautiful countryside and exceptionally friendly people to chat to I stayed in Surin where my ex-girlfriend comes from i used chill out with the locals with an ice cold Leo or Singha in the evening's, it's a bit like my hometown of Wigan it's a dump but 30 minutes away you are in the countryside with beautiful scenery with the quaint village pub where you can have a Sunday lunch and chill out. Big cities and towns are definitely not for me I like Pattaya but I could never live there it's a concrete jungle great for a holiday but not to live there, I've mentioned this to Nick Dean which you know he's too much of a city man he asked me when I retire would I move to Pattaya I said no I'm a village man Pattaya is for a holiday destination only for me.
Yeah Eddy needs to find a Steady, and could show him around places you would never see. Especially without a motorsai you can't go and explore and limited to the usual haunts and touristy areas. It's still refreshing going to the real areas, even Udon you don't get ripped off and heckled. It's all the same-same but different anyway though. Most s/expats just like bars and girls anyway so no point for them going elsewhere - it's cool Ed is looking around a fair bit on this trip. It's also a balance - costs more when you're always on the move vs a monthly condo.
With all due respect you are comparing Apples with Oranges. Udon is the best place in isaan for a foreigner, especially a potential sexpat. You seem to compare it to pattaya, it's very different. The nonsense about it being dirty is unfair, especially compared to certain places in Bangkok, phuket, and Pattaya. There's better Western food in town than Brickhouse and Full throttle, but that is to taste.
Just your opinion . Udonthani and Khon Khean are wonderful places in every way, but for people who are hard to please and are obsesed with Pattaya will alway find it hard to say a good word about it . If I was retiring in Thailand those are the first two cities I would make a b-line for .

There's nothing wrong with the way it looks, Many nice lakes and parks.but you soon can get bored, it's certainly not hua hin.step outside the bar Street and it's difficult to get engagement with people And that's the main difficulty.
Eddy is sticking to the centre of town and as an Expat living here 20 years now I can tell you he is not showing you the real Udon. There are many expats here in Udon and we are very active. On Monday we play golf out at Sri Thani golf course on the south west side of Town. Eddy has not showed this side at all. forested and beautiful. On Tuesday we play pool in the centre of town. Eddy has covered the area where we play pool. On Wednesday we play golf in Nong Sam Rong in the north of the city, where we find the well known Tara beach resort complete with lake and beach. Eddy has not covered this either. On Thursday we head out fishing to one of the lakes around the city. Eddy has not covered this either. On other days we play petanque at a resort hotel or take a trip out of the city to a nearby location. Eddy has not bothered to show any of these. So really if you think Udon s just the street of bars and a shopping mall then you are very much mistaken. A good mid sized town with a lot of facilities and friendliness, just not bars and shopping.
I agree. I live in Udon Thani. It has an interesting history too with the Vietnam War. There are lots of places that are good in Udon. You just need time to find them. The town center is what you would expect from any town center. The people are lovely. A great indoor shopping mall, and almost everything you could buy in Europe you can get here. It has an expat community of over 20,000. Udon is not a tourist town, but rather a place to live and settle down. Immigration can process retirement and marriage visas in an efficient manner. I have never had a problem with that, and the immigration people who work there are lovely too....very helpful. Never have had any long ques for that. Generally I like Udon. I live here with my Thai wife and child, and have done so for over 5 years. All in all a good place to settle down.
Most western cities have broken pavements and holes in the Roads as well , udon more to do than the villages but not as busy as the usual traps for the monger community 😉
Why have you spent so much time in Udon Thani on this trip? A choice of 2 places for dinner is not very appealing and not a good reason to stay so long.
What does this place offer retired people to do? Without a social network and leisure activities, it seems to me that life for retired people would getting boring very fast.
