Kool G Rap's Hilarious Reaction to Lil Yachty's "Peek A Boo" & Mumble Rap

  • Kool G Rap's interview with VladTV concludes with a discussion about the current hip hop landscape. On "mumble rap," Kool G says: "I don't think much of mumble rap, I don't think highly of it...so many things that young cats are doing have nothing to do with the roots of where this thing started from." Kool G goes on to argue that even the label "mumble rap" is oxymoronic and that it proves that the message of the music today is not important. Watch above.

for real. that's a big part of why I enjoy rap. I mean dope beats and attitude are important and all, but I listen to dudes like G Rap, Rakim, Guru, etc. and I get a huge kick out of listening to their wordplay. It's actually fun to me when you hear a dope rhyme and you're able to decipher it, like a "Eureka!" moment. It's not like a nerd thing, like you're studying it like a fucking Harvard paper, it's just like something you get or you don't. I love that about hip-hop, I thought that was a big part of it.

"there's still guys out there doing it ya just gotta search the underground....." gee diesel, that's starting to become a tired-ass excuse. The point being is that the underground artists who are dope lyricists aren't getting the recognition they rightfully deserve. "Mumble rap" shouldn't even be mainstream. The new school got the game fucked up. Wack is the new cool, apparently.

Lol that's not how rap got its name at all. Ill give you credit though thats a pretty good thought to abbreviate r.a.p. and call it rhythm and poetry. Its actually rap and doesn't stand for anything like that. It started in the 70's with someone talking a message or story over a beat. It's someone trying to convey something to you in that musical style so people started saying go and rap about it. You can probably google it to see where the exact term came from but every documentary I've ever seen has always had the same origin story.

In rock/metal we don't focus on lyrics as much, vocals are like another instrument (Yeh there's things that real musicians play called instruments) but yeh the focus is on the riffs and the music
It can't be ignorant if that's the type of genre it is where the vocal style is like that plus if u read death/black metal lyrics it's not all bout hell and Satan

He gave an interesting perspective on rap music just now: "You want your words to be heard". That's really deep, because even if you're not the best lyricist you can still tell your story and have something meaningful to say. So if I met a Yatchy or one of these mumble rappers I would just ask, "what are your words on these songs saying?" Like what are you hoping to express through your music? I'd be interested to see what they would say since they barely use words in the first place.

It's a different culture now, it's Pop Culture now, not Hip Hop...If you were born in the 60s, 70s and some the early 80s you were introduced to Hip Hop as Hip Hop Culture. If you were born in the mid/late 80s & after you were introduced to Pop Culture. That in itself causes a complete separation from the foundation & the elements. The educational process is non existent in the Pop Culture Era! A dude/chic born in 1983 wasn't old enough to intake the beginning of the Golden Era with Ra, KRS, Kane & G Rap, etc...But if they really were passionate about the culture & the music once they were old enough to get hooked (Late 80s, early 90s), they eventually went back to discover & learn about the history of the music & culture. You're not going to find many fans of the culture in their Teens & 20s & even some in their 30s of today who are interested in going back & learning the history & music before their time. Corporations wanted this & they got it! Hip Hop Culture is the Liner Notes era....if you're a part of it, you know!

I'm 14 and we in Germany appreciate Golden Age Hip Hop and Rap more because 1. I'm still bumping that shit cos nothing developed from rap to mumble rap. 2. When you listen to german rappers (not a big fan tho) that are big at the moment, you can tell they are still far more lyrical than u.s mumble rappers.
We like REAL rap and hip hop like in the 90s, because in that genre there ain't nothin like mumble rap existing here, its just not a thing... thank god :)
So here there are really only two types of rap; German Rap and Old School Rap, but since the youth in germany consist of mainly germans there are also less people that love old school rap, sadly. But still it is better than mumble rap.

'A person will be entertained to the limit of their intellect'... Damn! I couldn't agree more with G on this. Always had huge respect for him. There always was more depth to his music than your average.

I agree 100% with everything he said, and that it's ridiculous that the youth would rather listen to something that makes no sense than to an actual lyrical assassination of a beat. However it's hard to say that when we were the same growing up! We didn't wanna hear what the old people were telling us was cool. Nah we had our own sense style, our own preferences, and our own guilty pleasures. As they grow you're gonna catch them start listening to early's 2000 Hip-Hop, then they go into the 90's and so on and thats when they have their awakening to what Hip-Hop really is about.

This man is so intelligent. He is very conscious. And he is the illest lyricist in hiphop history for that reason.
