Thanks, Len. I march to the beat of my own drum. When I realized that this bike was in no way suitable for my boys, I just said fk it and went all the way. Some day I’ll do up a 26” beach cruiser frame, but that’ll probably have to wait until after the global food crisis instigated by wealth hoarders cools off a little.

3/8” interlocking foam floor tiles. Low cost. Easy to work with. Not durable against scratches and punctures, but vibration proof.

Could you also show us the frame and how you built it

    • @OrneryMouse
      @OrneryMouse  Рік тому

Difficult to do at this point, because the frame is pretty much buried. Seems like every time I’m inspired to do some new project, I don’t think about videoing any of it until after it’s built. Then I’m like, oh man I should have video’d that...
But it’s worth going through. I had to pull a few tricks here and there just to fit the engine in, and the way the seat/tail are framed depended on the gas tank position. So there’s some nuts and bolts and a seat plate and a few other things that are not just noteworthy, but actually integral to the whole bike.
Sorry, this will a bit long winded, but I’m guessing if you’re asking that question then you’re considering building something like this. Everything I did to this could be scaled up, just make sure to use a higher quality steel than what I did for the seat/tail frame. Now, if you look at a full size bike, the seat/tail frame is usually welded aluminum bolted to the main frame, so it’s made light because it bears a relatively low load, and you don’t want a bunch of extra weight up high at the back. But I used a folding deck chair for the job. Not ideal for a larger sized man.
Ok, one last thing; when I made this bike, it was actually supposed to be for my oldest boy. So the seat height and handle bar position was the first thing I set up. When you build that part, consider that you want your butt at about the 2 o’clock position right over the rear tire, and in a full tuck you stomach should touch the gas tank. Down low. Handle bars up a little higher relative to the seat so that your knees don’t interfere with steering.
I was thinking of either waiting until the next project and promising myself to be a good youtuber and video it, or just doing a bunch of sketches and a talk vid explaining what’s going on under all that. Dunno.

That’s actually very hard for me to do. My process is so messy and half-hazard that it just doesn’t translate well on video. I kinda showed how I do stuff in the most recent vids, so I hope that’s something to guide you in the right direction.
There’ll be more vids coming very soon. The weather is turning warm again, my boys just got their first motorbikes and I’ve already got my own bikes out and tuned up. Might be doing some body work today on the fugazi gixxer, so if I can come up with anything worth filming, I’ll chop together a video and upload.

Oh yeah? To own this bike you’ve got to be a nutty sack of balls. One time I was walking down the side of a mountain in Jasper national park with a friend, when a black bear stepped out from behind a rock. I was surprised, so I threw my hands up in the air and yelled in the loudest, lowest voice I could make. The bear reared up and roared right back at me. My buddy ran. I grabbed the nearest stick I could find, and started jumping about, thrashing everything near me and screaming like wild ape. Then the bear ran.

It’s a really fun little bike. Disk brakes would be nice on it too. I’m pretty sure we both had to do similar kind of frame mod to fit the engine, cut the top bar and rejoin it at the seat post. Worked out pretty well. These days I’d bet that CCM gets their bikes built in China, but there was a time when they made solid and well built steel frame bikes with quality parts. This bikes not so bad. Good steel, good welds. Good little bike. I think I’m going to try a 28 tooth sprocket and bump up the top speed a little hehehe

At first the idea of having cornered myself into cutting panels open to access internals seemed a bit off-putting, but after having done it now it wasn’t so bad. By the time the glue gun was hot I had it all ready to reassemble.
To be fair, easy to me is maybe not easy to everybody else. A while ago I made a chain mail shirt, and after having seen it a buddy wanted to make one too. So I showed him the pattern and how easy it was, then I said now do it 40,000 times. He didn’t agree with me that it was easy.

Ok that’s a lot of horsepower! But mine runs a stock BT80, is 20” tall and only weighs about 45lbs. We’re not really in the same class. It would be fun to see how this bike stacks up against bigger bikes though, especially on a track.

I probably already told you but.....To escape high gas prices & transportation costs. But still be able to travel 35- 45mph (possibly more) for long distances.... I wanna build a DIY electric (electric for legality reasons) fully enclosed aerodynamic recumbent trike, AKA velomobile. Sadly most velomobiles are stupid expensive & look super dorky. Plus not actually enclosed enough to keep all the rain & cold out.....But there are some cool looking ones like the Trisled Aquila 3. Thats bullet shsped, looks like a glider plane without wings. I seen a few other decent non dorky DIY builds..... 2 problems with Ebikes & motorcycles is, they don't keep you warm or dry & have horrible aerodynamics.....If you ride in a fully tucked position on a motorcycle. You become 30% more fuel efficient, plus can reach higher top speed just from tucking in..... An aerodynamic velomobile offers 35+% efficiency. Plus keeps you warm & dry with 3 wheels for slick roads....A teardrop shape is the most aerodynamic shape possible. Which is in part why rain turns into a teardrop shape when falling through the air....The world record speed for a human powered 2 wheel velomobile on flat ground is almost 90mph. That's how much a lightweight aerodynamic enclosure helps 🆚 bicycle or recumbent bicycle human pedal power record......There's a YT video titled something like- " Man builds diy solar powered electric clipper trike." That uses many of the same ideas I have. But I think his is too big/bulking, not as fast. But what is cool about his is. He built a solar power mini motorhome. One idea I had was "The CyberTrike" a full suspension velomobile that looks like a cyber truck. The body would be easier to make since it's all sharp angles & no curves & would still be pretty aerodynamic but not as much as a bullet/teardrop shaped would be.....I want to make one long enough. To where the seat can lay flat & convert into a sleeping pod,for road trips......The ultimate electric velomobile idea 💡 is an amphibious e-velomobile that could br drove directly in & out of the water....I really like the idea of full suspension, light offroad, amphibious cyber trike. With enough storage space for groceries.....Imagine a fully enclosed electric kyak 🛶 with removable top that you can drive onroads down to river & straight in. You could use a trailer for more road trip storage. (Maybe a floating trailer?) It could be recharged by wall 🔌 plug in, lightweight foldup 📂 carry aboard solar panels or just bring a small portable 700w inverter generator to make an instant hybrid. They're small lightweight & quiet .....I have an 89 ford van in decent shape.100k miles good engine compression, ran when parked. But it's been sitting, needs 4 tires, fluids, battery, rear brake fixed,etc...On one hands it's well worth fixing up & would make great camping van with mild lift & atv tires. But I'm looking at around $1000+ to get drivable. But then gotta pay $120yr registration, insurance would be at least $100 month min & I'd only get 13-14 mpgs. With periodic breakdowns & higher maintenance costs,etc.....I don't wanna pay $10 in gas for 1 trip to grocery store....Im pretty sure the electric velomobile would be a legal loophole for transportation. Since a 750w ebike & electric recumbent is fully legal. The enclosure doesn't make it illegal as long as it has pedal power. The motor will have a 750w label but they wouldn't know it's 750w + unless speeding. I know around here I won't be bothered & I can ride 8 miles to store without freezing. Plus it's easier to ride 8 miles sitting down in electric recumbent trike 🆚 ebike. I'd still like to get my van on the road sometime. But think from a logical rational standpoint it actually makes more sense to put money into enclosed electric recumbent trike. If the ebike kit used is reliable. Since it's cheaper & can get me around in the cold.....I feel like the 4 stroke 100cc motorized bicycle kit would be way more reliable than an ebike bike kit. I'd have to aways pull out the battery & bring inside & always worry about it getting too hot or cold in summer & winter. If you get bored check out "diy solar powered clipper trike" He built it to save money on transportation & stopped driving/making car payments. Other cool bike is "the Joystick bike" electric recumbent & "Trisled Aquila 3" can't remember the name but guy in Hungary 🇭🇺 build a bad ass diy electric velomobile.....My problem is....I'm just talking & not doing coz the heath issue slowdown & no workshop but still have the tools. Imagine how nice it'd be if your motorized bicycle had storage for groceries & was fully enclosed for those wet and/or cold ❄ winters?

As it happens, I do know of the guy you’re talking about with the velomobiles, and a couple other dudes who do similar stuff. They have great ideas, especially the coroplast guy. I’d love to have a recumbent motorized fully enclosed trike. Damn that’d be cool, and very useful. Makes you wonder why nobody is doing it, because it definitely falls within the bounds of the law around here. Incidentally, I’ve been talking with one of my buddies about getting some welding help for just that. Who knows when that’ll happen, but the idea is there.
The first time I got pulled over by the cops on my windshield/custom body bike, the cop was a little perplexed, so I showed him that it’s just a bicycle with some foam. There was nothing he could say, except slow down next time and have a nice day. Even when I ride the mini they leave me alone, for the same reason. Considering that the law allows for all kinds of bikes and trikes with fancy bodies, full size electric bikes with fairings, completely enclosed mobility scooters etc, a homemade recumbent with a roof is just another efficiency vehicle on the road. And since we’re all very concerned about the environmental impacts of human activity these days, then the police and local activists should cheer you on as you go down the road pumping along with just one piston, where everybody else has at least four, and they’re all bigger.
Something serious to consider; the automobile industry is corrupt like all human industry today, and brings much suffering to the world to satiate our desire for comfort and ease. Virtually every household now owns one automobile for every adult. Now everybody wants e-cars, so another market to rape the natural environment, and poison and impoverish people has opened up. The wheel of human suffering is driven in part by our willing participation in this reckless gluttony of selfishness. To leave your road truck and van parked, is to literally ease the suffering of some unknown people on the other side of the planet. This is no small thing, even though your individual contribution to ease suffering is just one tiny drop. The long term effect of our non-participation in corrupt industry is the bettering of our own lives. I highly encourage you to leave the truck and van parked, and try to make a velomobile.

@@OrneryMouse Wire welding-flux core with a $120 harbor freight 120v AC welder is super easy to learn & strong enought to weld a bike frame. I could teach someone in under an hour. The hf brand flux wire sucks & name brand wire works much better. I wish I hadn't sold mine coz my 3500w generator had enough power to run it but it can't run my better 240V mig welder.....
Yeah cars are a scam for sure, recently seen a Uncle Tony's Garage youtube video talking about a 2019 f150 with $5,000 electrical damage. Simply from water in a tail light cover.... Plus they could easily make small light 2 seater vehicles that 75+mpgs with decent power but refuse to do so. The 200mpg VW XL-1 diesel/electric hybrid is proof.
I'll try to keep this one short, my ideal daily transport or adventure vehicle that I think would sell. Would be a full suspension off road capable, very fuel efficient, 55 mph- possibly faster, amphibious velomobile. Think 3 wheel adventure motorcycle u sit in with aerodynamic weather enclosure. Since it's lightweight, It'd be easy to push if you got stuck off road or going in & out of water. It'd be like an electric kayak in the water. Able to drive directly in & out of water. With optional single wheel floating pull behind trailer. The trailer lid would of course have a solar panel on it & trailer would have suspension. Vehicle would be long enough to convert into a sleeping pod by laying the seat flat. Basically, a mini amphibious fuel efficient motor home. You could take cross country trips like those bikepackers & recumbent trike packers. Or use for daily transport in rain-winter to stay warm & dry. Heat provided by electric heated seat cover maybe heated hand grips,etc...It'd obviously have air vents for summer but could easily have Air Conditioning by using a couple 12v peltiers & fans that blow cool air. They're used in computers & portable electric mini fridges. They're inefficient 🆚 compressor AC but small lightweight & could keep the small pod cabin cooled on a 98F day. They be like those little swivel vents on planes that blow cool air on you.
I know It'd be much harder to make an ambitious version though. I'd be happy with just an electric or motorized velomobile that I could ride in rain & cold, here I could get away with a stroke. But not if I wanted to go on a road trip.
But yeah, it's very simple all you need to do to have 65-70mpgs & 55mph of a 125cc scooter 🛵 but also be able to stay warm & dry in rain/cold. Is simply add a lightweight aerodynamic removable weather enclosure.

@@OrneryMouse I found a really good example similar to what I had in my mind...If you get bored look at the VW NILS concept vehicle....It uses 4 wheels instead of 3 but any scooter 🛵 company could easily build a 250cc 3 or 4 wheel version by putting a 250-300cc scooter engine & drivetrain in the rear. It could also be stretched to make a tandem 2 seater. It'd be able to cruise at 75mph, with around 70mpg, could be used year round just like a car. Isn't stupid looking, cost 1/4 the price of a new car, with easy low cost maintenance.
