The world needs to hear much, much more of Eric Tagg. And I wish he and Lee Ritenour would team up to make this kind of music again. To me, this song is perfect, especially with Bill Champlin's backing vocals. (Best two singers together I've ever heard, anywhere.) The balance, the harmonies, the recording... everything is perfect. I very rarely feel that way about a song. Bobby Caldwell's
Oh..but let's not forget the Ego too!!I know these Cats yes they're both good but they're also quite proud shits too and not that fun to work with because they're too perfectionist to get along with!!Look just because folks may have a certain peculiar talent and sound great doesn't automatically make them particularly great people to hangout with!!And Lee Rit is a friggin' prick too!!Know all of them however my other Cats like George Benson, Al Jarreau & Nathan East and Bernard Wright Lenny Williams now THESE Cats are down to earth and downright Inspiring to be around!!
I too, know and have known Eric for almost 40 years and have met Lee. Eric is a good man & friend. Lee is a chill SoCal musician, who is a really nice guy, too.
I love this song I can clearly see myself again that young bright eyed boy singing the lyrics to this song sitting in the back seat of my father's car riding on the highway on the way to my aunts house in the country with all of my siblings I really miss songs like this thank you Mr Ritenour Also Mr Eric Tagg .
Eric is a friend of mine. He's still singing jingles. I miss him performing, when he was playing with Kelly McNulty in the late 80's. What a fine vocalist! You are the man ET!
Ohh man, thanks for putting this back on. This song takes me back to a very special time in my life, my HS graduation in May 1981. I listened to this song as I drove to see my sweetheart one final time before I left for active duty in the service, we lived 10 hours apart and I had to see her. Sadly we drifted apart eventually breaking up, but I never for got this song, flash forward 25 years and we are together forever with this and a host of other songs forever linked to our love n relationship
I had the honor and pleasure of seeing Lee in Nagoya Japan in 1983 and the band had Eric, Phil, Harvey, Nathan, Ernie Watts,Don Grusin, Barnaby Finch and one more i can't remember. Eric and Phil were both featured in various songs and it was fantastic! I was with a group of 5 musicians from LA that was doing a show there in Nagoya at the time, and I think we spent over an hour with the band afterwards in the Green Room. It was the most memorable concert I have ever experienced. Thanks guys!
Used to go see them at The Golden Bear in Huntington Beach a really cool small venue. Had a secret crush on Eric Tagg haha!! Loved his voice ! Had this Album & Cassette too 😊😁
the excellent lee ritenour from his 1980 master piece RIT, i love this album.david foster and harvey mason on production with captain fingers. bill champlin on backup vocals with eric tagg who is awesome.lee plays beautifully on his signature ibanez LR 10 .the brilliant jerry hey horns make it a pleasure for certain!
Eric Tagg, Bobby Caldwell, and George Duke seem to all be in that same category of singers, can’t quite place my finger on it what the label would be, just very jazzy and falsetto
This song is tailored fit for Eric, he has a great voice and I love his delivery on it and the Lee Ritenour with Phil Perry is outta this world but Phil is capable of taking another person's song and making it his...I love both versions equally and don't care which one you play because I still get the same effect mentally
My fam didn't too much do rock when I was a kid, so I might hear this song on the muzak at the mall. Loved hearing this song then. Sounded so calming, so refreshing, and it would help to make the trip more memorable, which is why I can remember it now! Also, used to hear this on the muzak when I worked at Walmarts. That's when I really came to appreciate this song. And, this song was a nice, momentary escape from all the BS there. Still, I really enjoy this song:),
one of the greatest tunes ever written for me...the combination of lee and eric is unmatched...btw,didnt know chmplin and foster played have parts..that explains the flavor....
Don't understand why we have to compare the songs to the degree of rewarding superlatives ( good, better, best. ..etc) I can easily enjoy both renditions. Each person came with their own interpretation and rocked it.
Shane you sound like a cool dude I also remember these songs when I was kid they bring back innocent times for me , when songs were actually created and sounded great.
Yea that's my long time Dallas buddy Sir Eric always performed with his Eric Tagg Group @ Popsicle Toes Dallas 1986!!Folks Eric is an absolute perfectionist and he had all the Jingle gigs in Dallas/Ft.Worth area locked down and only just a few other's could ever get through their politics with the Studio producers so Eric & afew others successfully got to do 98% of all radio jingle commercials and YOU could forget it No matter how good you were!!
He's in Belgium right now on a mission trip - a long one! I understand from a friend that he will be moving to Mt. Pleasant, hopefully, this year! Keep in touch, I live only about 30 miles south of there and am excited to see him come home!
How well you forget his gigs at "Fenders" on northwest highway. He played there one weekend on a rainy night for my girlfriend and I exclusively. It was a night I will always cherish. The rain kept people at home, and very few people were out that night. Hard to believe he was in landscaping.
An incredible rare live album of Eric Tagg with the Tagg McNulty band from 1983 is now available and the long live version of the tune SUNSET DRIVERS and MR BRIEFCASE is recently available with Taggs vocal prowess on full display and masterclass guitar work by jazz rock fusion guitarist JASON BUCKLIN ........@t been listening to this fantastic album since it came out recently.
this Lee Rit song has been in my playlist for 20 years but this is my first time seeing the vocalist singing the song... so cool. thanks for posting. I wish someone can share a video of Eric Tagg singing another Lee Rit song "Keep it alive"
Hi ! Very happy to be able to put this video in my favorites. Lee Ritenour is simply the best, he doesn't play many notes just to show his skills, he plays just the good notes at the good moment. Thumbs up ! BYE !

Tagg also wrote this song and Mr. Briefcase. MyJunior is spot on, this is Tagg. There are versions with Kenya Hathaway and also Phil Perry, but I've never seen Tagg perform this song with Rit live. The one who does the best with it is Grady Harrell, Jr. His dad (Grady Harrell) had a hit "Sticks and Stones" back in the day.

Man, I love this song.
Lee Ritenour and Eric Tagg - what a combination
I heard this on the radio yesterday and remembered how I loved this song :)
I had the honor and pleasure of seeing Lee in Nagoya Japan in 1983 and the band had Eric, Phil, Harvey, Nathan, Ernie Watts,Don Grusin, Barnaby Finch and one more i can't remember. I was 16 when this song came out, I used to daydream about this playing on the radio, while I drove a convertible down PCH, alas, it was not to be.
Eric has such a lovely voice but can't get over how much he reminds me of Ned Flanders ;-)
What a beautiful song.. that music sets the mood to the groove and Eric delights it so with a great soulful voice. amazing..wow
Love the bridge in this song. The many key-changes in it really build-up and then relieve the tension.
Eric Tagg is a bad dude. He has pipes in that voice
we miss his voice on the R&B charts>>>>
Eric Tagg my vocal hero
Thanks Anton! Finally the original with Eric Tagg!!!
Quite possibly the epitome of the West Coast sound
Used to go see them at The Golden Bear in Huntington Beach a really cool small venue. Had a secret crush on Eric Tagg haha!! Loved his voice ! Had this Album & Cassette too 😊😁

To those who love Eric's voice and writing, I found a CD of some of his originals on CDBABY. Great stuff!
I can imagine Eric and Michael McDonald doing music together!
One of the videos shown on MTV during its first 24 hours on the air.
Hit #15 AC, and pop, #27 soul in Billboard. 1 hit wonder. God bless!
The bridge is so besutiful....

..."What you won't do for love" is similar. Wow, what if Caldwell, Ritenour, Tagg, and Steve Porcaro made an album? I'd pay $100 or more for that.
