I have adored this song for years! It is the embodiment of 70's Soul!
Philippe Wynne must be one of the most underrated soul singers ever….
Not in Detroit…. We know exactly who he was! But yes on a worldwide level I believe he was too
He was one of the best Tenors ever and still managed to have Jazz tight time, and rumor has it only 8 attended his funeral, I hope this song makes the classical cannon.
They brought the whole orchestra to play that song, this is so amazing
...and 3 female back up singers!!
You had to bring it on this show. Some artists may have lip synced but I don’t remember them.
Philippe's voice was one of a kind... The Mighty Detroit Spinners...IYKYK
🏆👑⚡😔🙏🤗
Best period for ALL genres of music. The music, the lyrics, the musicianship, the performances and creativity.
That's why it lives on and is timeless.
Current stuff is not music. Will easily be forgotten.
Spinners ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Well said. The artists back then were real musicians. Take away autotune and computers and most "musicians" these days would cease to exist.
PHIL kills it - the guys backing him up - the drummer doing it - the horn section so tight - it all adds up to great sound, doing credit to a fun song by Linda Creed and Thom Bell.
wow, great show! And when they pulled out those rubber bands! Yes!
⚡️💙⚡️
Always a great group with a bunch of classic songs. I remember them from back in the 60's, before they really hit their peak in the 70's. The collaboration hit with Dionne Warwick, "Then Came You," ranks with the best of anything done in smooth soul.
Philippe' the endless fresh ADLIB vocal MASTER!!!
Ahh the good ole days 😊
Just Phenomenal music from back in the day!
Happy Monday... thank you for sharing! 💖
I was born in 1973 - and as soon as I found this song it became one of my all-time favorites.
So much raw talent...and everyone's smiling and having fun....
Always loved that song. And the Spinners.
Me too
Great video and they brought the entire band! Those horns!
If Starlord could only see this.... 🤣🤣 I'm glad movies are using older tracks like this, opens them up to REAL MUSIC!!
they mentioned King Crimson in the cut scene of the last one
What a sound, what a groove! They were never dull, and one thing that helped keep it lively was that they had multiple lead singers. Constant performing made them tight as a drum, but it nust have cost a small fortune to tour that gang around.
The Spinners are still on the road, 59 years and counting, though all the folks you see here have either retired or died.
thanks for the fun facts
Thinking about the pitch meeting for this song "What? A song about rubberbands? Okay I guess."
Loved this song as a kid, still do as an old man.
Oohwhee that rubber band stirred up some jam
I just instantly loved this song when I heard it on AM radio back in the day. So good!
THANK YOU MIDNIGHT SPECIAL!!!!!!!!!!
I will always love this song. One of my favourites when I was 9 years old!
One of the all time great performances
This groups was so, so good.
Haha, awesome performance and early use of the exercise band! 😂 I love The Spinners! 😍 I was just entering 7th grade when this aired, and these guys were in my 45 rotation. 💜
I loved this song on the radio and was excited to learn they’d be on the Midnight Special. This performance blew me away. I had not seen it since, but it has not lost its magic. So grateful for this channel!
Philippes is the best singer at adliving in a song pure talent 👌 ❤
One of my favorite songs ever ❤️
Love this song. Reminds me of John Candy in Stripes
This song was used by the Pittsburgh Pirates when relief pitcher Kent Tekulve entered the game. Teke was a tall, skinny, side armed thrower. He got the last outs of game seven of the Pirates last World Series Championship in 1979
Just as good as the first time I watched it on Midnight Special. Great groups every week. Something you just don’t see on TV anymore, even with all these cable stations!? The Wolfman was the icing on the cake!
How can the audience sit so still during this song!!😮
Quaaludes.
@@tombombara Seconal/Tuinal's
White folk don't have no rhythm and they don't know good music when it's right in their face.
Damn. All live. All real. What a moment in time and music.
That was awesome! Fantastic performance!
What a fun & stretchy vibe! Thanks for another good one, Burt & TMS!!👍
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed.
I love this song and grew up with it.😀
What a great talented band! One of the best. R.I.P. Phillipe
Pure joy!
💘 that. Music love ❤❤❤
One of the coolest songs From the 70s. Killer bass
That drummer is kicking it👌👊
AMAZING!!!!!
When you have an odd number of backup dancers, so one of them has to pair up with an audience member and just chill on the side.
I think he did alright. The woman from the audience was gorgeous!
Great vocals and the band delivers an outstanding groove! 🎉🍾👍
Work of art
JUST GREAT
How I miss those days.
Fun, lots of energy and that band was awesome. Who knew props in their act would become exercise resistance equipment? LOL
Love me some Spinners!!!!
Grew up on the Spinners. Got all their LPs yet and play them!!
I fell in love with this song after it was being played in the movie Stripes with bill Murray.
Guardians of the Galaxy never sounded so cool, soul at his highest level.
I was 10, one of my all timers!
Good memories, man I grew up in the best era for music Bump That!
Philippe was relieved of Rubberband duty.
😂
Oh to be so blessed to be here during this live performance. My gawd
“Rubberband Man” brought to you by the fine folks at Alliance for over 100 years. Oh, and the Spinners for maybe 50.
It's a Spinners party y'all and we're just happy to be here.
The suits are really cool. But where can I get a pair of those shoes? Those are nifty.
For those who don't know, this song is about the producer's son who was incredibly gifted with musical ability but was overweight so everyone made fun of him and ignored his talent. It was originally going to be called The Fat Man.

@@chrismathewsjr Given I'm sure you will not accept anything I cite, please explain the lyric, "Once I went to hear them play
At a club outside of town
I was so surprised
I was hypnotized
By the sound this cat put down
When I saw this short fat guy
Stretch a band between his toes
Hey, I laughed so hard
'Cause the man got down
When he finally reached his goal"
I'll wait
Agreed@@chrismathewsjr
I wonder if FAT Albert was inspired by this song?
My brain can’t process what my eyes are seeing and my ears are hearing
Maybe I first saw them do this on Johnny Carson? Anyhow it was a revelation. Great number to draw a naive white kid into soul/R&B.
Still own this LP :)
this is tight.
Thom Bell, Thom Bell and Thom Bell. Accept no substitutes!
This is the last hit The Spinners made before they started doing the remakes.
Such a great song and performance but the audience is dead to the beat. 😞
Could it be I'm falling in love with the Spinners?
3Deee ❤
The woman who got pulled up on stage with them will remember that for the rest of her life.
A 1:03 I saw a hint of the robot!
Yes Philippe did..he was such a entertainer.
The Spinners also did the song (lip-sync) on the short lived NBC 1976 variety show "(Dick) Van Dyke & Company". Dick hurt himself on the rubberband with his hands!!!
👍
어벤저스 ^^
Are the audience pacing themselves?
Does The Spinners mean what I think it means? 😎
composed, arranged, and produced...by the LATE GREAT, THOM BELL. he had to MANY GREAT hits/songs, like this. and it's too bad singers/entertainers. DON'T perform like this anymore/put on a GREAT show... THE MIGHTY Detroit Spinners.
Awesome song but the audience should have taken dance lessons...
I believe the rubber band was reference to Herion use
Bruno Mars has been trying in vain to replicate this for the modern times. What he’s overlooked is you can’t beat a classic, the genre is (unfortunately) outdated and hit a deaf ear with today’s audience. No wonder we don’t hear his shit anymore 💁♂️ Not to mention he’s probably broke after being sued by every Motown artist ever. 😆
Younger people heard this in The Avengers but us old farts remember it from Stripes. Makes me want to mud wrestle.
We older farts remember it from when it was new, blasting out of the radio. (CKLW from Windsor, Ontario)
Actually it was from Guardians of the Galaxy not the Avengers. I was ten when this song came out and my dad must have played it twenty times a day back then.
