Phil had one of the best years of his life in 1990 before he got hurt; In 1993 he was selected to the Pro Bowl then Reeves cut him, which I'll never forgive him for. Belichick tried to get Phil to sign with the Browns but Phil wanted to retire a Giant. Considering he played in an exclusively run first offense and his best receiver was Bavaro, his 37,000 career yards is quite amazing. He also was tough as nails, standing in taking vicious hits time after time. It's a shame he couldn't have played 2 more years.
No on-camera section for this one just because I couldn't make it through about 3 seconds without hacking and coughing. Still recovering from pneumonia but we're getting there. Had to record the second half of this script one line at a time, but hopefully we're back to normal soon!
Pneumonia? Pfft, no big deal. Now if it was that other thing, you know, the modern day bubonic plague that everyone who gets dies from (or so I was told in 2020) then I would be giving you and your channel the last rites. Just don't work yourself too hard, your core audience will understand and wait for you if you don't put out a video every other day.
I had totally forgotten that Conklin actually started a game against my team in '93, even though I remember watching it! That was the season after Joe Gibbs scurried out of town and left poor Richie Peititbon holding the bag on the sinking ship.
Oh,boy-I had to shake my head at that story-how couldn’t his mother know which team his son was going to if she was a giants fan and she mixed up the two teams? This is mind boggling! 😮😮😮😮😮😅
Phil Simms had a tough year in 1989 because he played most of the season on two bad ankles. Phil got himself healthy and was playing great in 1990 and played at a high level. He had his season end prematurely when his leg was broken in a late season game vs Buffalo.
The Giants drafted ol Justin Pugh 10 years ago and he came back last year because the line was in shambles but he has said that hes a die hard Eagles fans and so are all his friends and family and it didn't change when he came to the Giants i don't know how you can have a guy like that on your team
I can see where that tweet about Gary Darnell came from. Seeing as he was the Florida interim coach when UF played Conklin and Washington in the freedom bowl
I wonder if this was some sort of ploy?? I'm trying to work out why this would be done intentionally, but cant really sort that one out. Maybe Cary and his Mother were trolling the Media?? Seems odd a Mother wouldn't be paying attention to who her son would be potentially signing such a life altering contract with. Maybe his Mother just knew nothing about football other than her son plays the sport??
I know it was a different era but they guy finished his college career with 31 tds to 36 ints. What a joke. How does he get drafted in the 4th round? I wish I could have played QB back in the 80's
Think after finding he got teams mixed when he hung , they thought he mentally challenged or he isn't to bright but how wouldn't he know or do the mix up
My guess is a clingy mother to whom he had to lie because she'd be upset if he wasn't playing in New York. Remember, there is no e-mail, no cellular network for most. And a 22 year old wouldn't think of the ramifications of lying to his mother. Until he got drafted.😂 I mean even Norman and Norma Bates would have said they had a "close relationship."
Ah yes, the greatest draft flubs in history Many draftees of the Redskins/WFT/Commanders' moms have been upset since they thought they were being drafted by Seattle. In 2011, the Browns were going to draft Jordan Cameron, and called the already-drafted Cameron Jordan🤣😅😆
But Jeff George watching him , and his problem was Jeff thought he was great when he was ok at best , couldnt lead his team to no bowl game if a top level QB he had himself up for the Heisman and he may be playing for the national game but no nothing just like this years 2024 first pick QB C.Williams USC he didn't win the Heisman or played in the final 4 or have his team up for the national championship so big let down so some of the QB'S needed to land in right spot some are so good doesn't matter where they go and this guy Giants I could see it he was Sims a little and if he could've went where he doesn't need to carry the team.
Why do you start with the hypothetical parallel scenario (that didn’t happen) using current players? Why not just go straight to past scenario that actually did happen? I love your videos, but the "imagine if similar thing happened now with this other player/team" intros really adds no value.
Maybe he went to Ohio and thought he he was meeting with the Vikings

Thanks George Young for forcing us to watch Dave Brown

Yet another fascinating and entertaining video. Well done!

I figured that was the case when we didn't see you. Get well soon, my brother.
Get yourself a couple packs of Marlboros. It will numb the throat & you’ll stop coughing. It CAN’T go wrong. 😂

I first went to say that I commend you for using the proper team name when referring to the Washington Redskins
Fun fact: Cary Conklin is one of just three NFL QBs to be born on leap day
Who are the other two?
@@mitchbrown6652 Jim Powers and Dick Wood (Actually it's more like just 2 since Wood only played in the AFL)
One of two if you count Jim Powers as a LB/DB (which is really what he was). Also one of only 19 total players to be born on leap day
Actually kinda weird that it happened 3 times
@@JonPITBZN"Powers is *jacked* by all means!/Oh yeah, all juiced up and ready to go" (Scott Hall and Kevin Nash)
Had to🤣
Thanks for the time capsule travel! The evolution of the NFL passing game is fascinating.

I felt like his fandom for the Giants had made him completely wipe away the team he was talking to.
Yeah like a fandom for the Mets makes you completely wipe away hope. I'm sorry I had to do it.
@@glennrugar9248 Come on man I’m just trying to talk about football here
12:52 I'm sorry...WHAT?!?! 😯
To be fair, this isn't a good time for that because it might be a simple misunderstandiung from a mother that didn't have it registered to her head.

I recorded my Carpenters episode with COVID and regretted it. Take care of your health my man

Should the title be "A Draft Pick's Mother Couldn't Tell Two Teams Apart"?

Some how Cary Conklin's mother confused New York With Washington. I AM SORRY WHAT!?
No wonder Conklin couldn't tell the difference: He was a Husky.
Where they hoping it might happen or was Redskin camp in NY that season when teams scrimmage against each other

Dan Marino threw more picks than touchdowns his final year at Pitt
@@OfficialJaguarGator9 lol thats crazy

Did Conklin's mom confuse Bill Parcells with Joe Gibbs? 🤔
Im in DC.... Im in NYC?
How? They look and sound nothing alike.

I think Cary Conklin got his head SPIKED into the ground by his parents 39.6 times!!!!
