Oh my god Trent undressing that bottle NEEDS music. Horrifying without it
NGL, there is a special place in my heart for Crown Royal. Not saying that it's a favorite. Just that very early in my whiskey journey, my 21st birthday in fact, an uncle gifted me a bottle. I have made a point to try most of the releases since then, back in 1990. I imagine I will have to give this own a shot as well.
Nice! My brother gave me a bottle on my 21st birthday in 1982, it has the label on it dated 1971 and I’ve never opened it! I planned on having some when I got married or had children but at that time I wasn’t drinking anything. Now I’m into bourbon, whiskey, tequila but I just haven’t opened it!
@nickp5511 - out of curiosity, it might be fun to see how much that bottle is worth. I bought a bottle of single malt from Silent Stills in 2000 after I defended my Masters. I set it aside for when I had kids or got a house. I wasn't blessed with children and the houses where l live start at 1.4 mil, so I never got a house. I spend $180 on the bottle. Sometime mid Covid I did a googl3 search on that bottle and it was worth $1500. You never know.
If you guys see Crown Royal’s “Hand Selected Barrel” at 103 proof, take a chance and buy it. Best “sipper” from Crown that I’ve ever had. A bourbon lover’s style of Crown for sure. The crown blackberry is great too for cocktails.
Crown Royal is a guilty pleasure. I will not turn my nose up at CR ever.
More important, how has Trenton never seen The Karate Kid? 😂
right how young is he??? lmao
@@kevinfoster2246 lol. I mean that’s a classic.
Can’t lie I slightly gasped hearing that. I literally specified myself about the Jaden Smith remark. That’s movie blaspheming
lol at the broken glass sound effect when Trent threw the bag 😂
Thanks guys! Dad is a huge crown fan so got one for him.
The only single malt I ever tried was from a craft distillery in MN (Tattersall) and it was the worst whiskey I've ever had. So bad I made everyone try it. This was a fun video! I'd be interested in having y'all do more single malts. I'm curious what they're supposed to taste like. The one I tried tasted like spoiled lettuce.
The descriptor they're politely not reaching for is 'mediocre'...
Naturally given generous assessments, but still straight and honest. And they don't tank the local store's sales on the product! These men are good people.
I really like this channel. 👍 👏
Would absolutely love more single malt content, got into them thanks to your guys' vids!
My first whiskey was Crown Royal so I will always enjoy some. Have quite a few. Just got two single barrels so looking forward to trying that soon. Great show as always!
I went to the New Riff distillery a few weeks ago and they gave us some of the single malt at the end of the tour. It was something special. The 6 year malted rye is also super underrated.
I was told you can drop off the crown royal bags to some liquor stores. Crown Royal will donate the bag stuffed with goodies (cleaning supplies, toothpaste, singles) to deployed military.
SLB Classics

15:01 nice sign off and nod, but it was slightly different thanks for keeping him straight trenton
Can't decide if this is impressive, helpful, or just sad. It's definitely sad but possibly one of the others additionally.
@@BuckMcAntlerson I appreciate the compliment.
Crown Royal used to have (maybe it's still around, but I haven't seen it in years) a Hand-Selected Barrel edition, my all-time favorite whiskey. It is one of the few times when the second and third bottles lived up to the hype of the first time I tried something and loved it.
2 stores by me have them and plenty. I was thinking of grabbing one to try
I bought a bottle a few weeks ago in Springfield MO for like ~ $50. Very happy I took a chance on it, it’s a great sipper. Definitely a bourbon lover’s type of Crown.
I tried several store pick barrels a while back and ended up getting a bottle of that over some well-regarded bourbon brands. My father was very happy with that gift.
@@Joe999v2It's good to hear they are still around. Hopefully, they will show up again in my area.
Thanks for the review. I want to try the NR Single Malt. I liked the malted rye version, so hopefully I’ll cross paths with it soon.
Not even surprised Trenton hasn't seen Karate Kid at this point
Sells for 48.00 here at Specs in Texas. We thought it was great for what it is.
Woohoo been waiting for this one.
Right on! My home province of Manitoba representin!!!
Shelter Point and Two Brewers make some great Canadian single malts.
LOL Viewer Discretion Advised, indeed. Thanks for sharing this review! We've been curious about this bottle and greatly appreciate your thoughts.
You know you're getting the fancy stuff when you're opening that velvet bag
Cedar Ridge Single Malt- called The Quintessential is excellent!
Bring on the CROWN !
Goodmorning! Have a great week guys!
Some solid ones to try: Harvest Rye and Barrel Select which is over 100 proof. Also the 13 year Bourbon mash from 5 years ago
Undressing the Crown Royal to Marvin Gaye is crazy. Cheers SLB fam!
You gotta find yourself a Driftless Glen Single Malt. PHENOMENAL!
2016 Jim Murray World Whisky of the Year was Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye.
When I tried that, the barmaid was so embarrassed about previous customers' negative reactions/disappointment, that she refused to accept any money for it: she was just trying to empty the bottle as fast as she could legally do so, without actually drain-pouring it... It was so underwhelming that I honestly cannot remember anything about how it smelled or tasted! I then asked for her recommendation (I think it was Mars Komagatake Nature of Shinshu Kohiganzakura, so in a whole better league) and bought one for me and one for her, so she didn't lose out. I think Northern Harvest Rye is regarded as a joke by almost everyone I know! (But then: so is Jim Murray!)
@@andrewbutler7681I was just starting my whisky journey at that time and ran out and bought a bottle. Am not a rye fan to this day. Pikesville would probably be my favorite but there are so many bourbons I like better why spend money on it. Just always assumed my palate was not developed enough to appreciate it.
CR Noble Collection, Barley Edition is an extraordinary blend of whiskies distilled from 85% unmalted and 15% malted barley grains, aged for at least 5 years. CR did a 100% Barley edition as part of their Noble Collection which is actually quite good. I thought the Harvest Rye was horrible but their 16 Year Rye also a Noble Collection release was life changing for the price. FYI.
It’s a great single malt. Crown did a great job on this one. Already one of my favorites. That Crown Barrel select is a whole different level though.
if you want some good crown royal the noble collection is amazing. hard to find now but can be found here and there sitting on the shelves. the 16 year rye is my favorite.
One day Trenton is going to like a Crown Royal and want to buy another bottle.... I may have to try this one though we mainly use the flavoured versions for making various drinks such as jello shots etc. I enjoy the regular Crown Royal Apple and the new Blackberry is also quite interesting.
Used use those bags for marbles when we were kids the good old days 😂😂
1 to try and include if you do a single malt blind - Stranahan's Blue Peak single malt. Given it's finished in Solera barrels, it might have a chance! Was gonna also suggest Woodford Reserve, but it's a straight malt, not a single malt.
Northern Harvest top shelf, award winning. Black is also good
I have Crown Royal Noble Edition 16 year old Rye. Pretty Good.
lol funniest head knod end ever. But Trent is right. The signal line is “right down here in the good old basement bourbon bar”
Virginia Distillery Co. has 3 new American Single Malts. Port finished is great. They also have Cabernet finished and cider cask finishes
I drank Canadian whiskies almost exclusively for many years. The regular Crown Royal was my special occasion bottle. But, in 2019, that was changed when my wife and I toured the Jack Daniels’ distillery. Been chasing bourbon and rye whiskies since then. P.S. The best single malt I have had so far is from Cedar Ridge.
I have always found CR to be very consistent with a decent flavor. There are a lot of whiskeys I like better but they are usually more expensive. I have had a couple of bottles of their Reserve which is very good. They have an XO finished in a cognac barrel that was decent as well. Both the Rye northern harvest and Noble Barley edition are fantastic. The 18Y XR is my favorite so far but not really worth the price but is a great choice once in a while.
What happened to SLB Tries?
Thanks for an idea for a video. Crown Royal and Royal Crown Cola. I wonder how hard it is to find RC Cola these days? 😂 Thanks for the review.
A store by me has some Crown Royal store picks coming in at 104 proof. Been thinking of grabbing one to see what CR taste like at a higher proof
Another bottle that I won’t be purchasing 😂 Happy living through y’all with these Crown Royal offerings. They do make a nice velvet bag…
Thanks guys, I enjoyed the video and the information. I'll pass on the CR though as I place this product in the same category as the Jim Beam White Label...
Up hear in Canada i keep hearing people rave about Shelterpoint Smokepoint Canadian whiskey. Apparently it's phenomenal.
I tried this Crown Single Malt and think it's okay just like you guys describe it
Shelter Point and Two Brewers make some great Canadian single malts.
I really enjoyed the New Riff single malt
Kurt, are you a taper or a hanger, or do you do both?
1:29 Y'all should have used "The Stripper" for this sequence. 😂
Posted this suggestion on another video guys. An idea for a Single Malt Blind:
Crown Royal
Bulleit
High West
Clermont Steep
The best part is watching Trenton throw the bag over his left shoulder. LOL
The undressing with Marvin Gaye is classic!
Cedar Ridge just released a special release Cigar Malt… 🤤 if you have the ability to snag one get two you will not be disappointed.
CR is usually a pass for me. It's not horrible or anything. The Orphan Barrels Entrapment is a 25yr CR Deluxe and it is awesome. But, yea 25yrs so there's that.
Have you guys done a review of the Crown Royal single barrel at 103 proof?
Yes guys. Please more ASM content and reviews
At 55usd, you're getting it much cheaper than here in Canada - here, the 90CAD price tag really sours the already unexciting taste. You could get a truly good, 10-12yr single malt scotch for that, and crown's less expensive XO blend tastes much better.
Sounds not too dissimilar from the standard Cedar Ridge single malt to me. The Cedar Ridge had a good bit of that toasted what I call cereal grain type of note to me but did have some fruit to it as well. Similar price point as well.
Y'all should try the High West BIB Rye. Curious to hear your thoughts.
How did you do it, Kurt? Not opening the bottle had to be hard for you.
Northern harvest rye is indeed really good. Works well in a manhattan. I think it's only available in Canada, though.
Being a Canadian, I have a soft spot for Crown Royal, especially their older releases (before flavored). Prices are always good. Don’t think I’d buy their single malt, there’s plenty of alternatives. Agree, it may be a good one to try for someone new to single malt. Don’t know why we’re being subjected to listening to Trenton talk about Canadian whiskey or single malt, he’s definitely the Chumley of the whiskey world, and definitely a proof hound rather than an expert.
If you've never had the barley edition, winter wheat, 18 yr, hand select, or XO, give those a try. Fantastic whiskys imo. I never think it's fair to judge a brand based on its flavored expressions. I agree the 23 yr apple is not something I would ever buy, ha ha!
I get strong pencil shavings on Evan Williams bottled in bond.
Have you guys done a Single Malt blind??
Need a vacation from the vacation.
I wonder how does it compare to the Stranahan's Blue Peak
As a Canadian I will say it's not a big big deal here lol.
kurt, single malt just means its from the same distillery. it can still be a blend and a SM
Crown Royal "XR" Red box from the Waterloo Distillery now sells for over 800 on secondary....so someone likes CR..LOL
Got one for you to try...Cragganmore 12 year Speyside Single Malt Scoth Whiskey.
OMG, had to pause and say it's sort of shocking you didn't know Jim Murray "crowned" Northern Harvest as World Whiskey of the Year back in 2016. 😮
There are many Single Malt Scotch whiskies at that price point.
I collect Crown Royal and I have 19 different flavors. I'm looking for Crown Royal XR Red. I have Blue, looking for red Someone please tell me where I can find it. I retire from the military and I'm having a CR party
CR is a big (bad) deal to me in Ontario . . . meh . . . CR is always a "Pass" until it goes on sale -30% or so . For the same price range , I always go for Single Malt scotch at 15 yo age.
I like the regular Canadian Club more than the standard CR. People are paying more for a fancy bottle and a bag.
Finally popped the "bubble gum" cherry in a nosing. Achieved my first E.H. Taylor Small Batch for MSRP. Got it home, grabbed a Glen, let it sit half an hour, and there it was... Bubble gum in my Bourbon.
COME ON BAND-AID AND PENCIL SHAVINGS!!😁
😂
Laphroaig will check the Band-Aid box for you.
You would think rye whiskey connoisseurs would know about an international award winning whiskey in Northern Harvest
The first and last time I had a pour of Crown Royale was 2004. It was a terrible tasting experience. I ve developed my palate greatly since then, but I think I'm traumatized. I can't force myself to buy a pour or a bottle. Sounds like I'm not missing anything.
The only CR release I actually enjoyed was Monarch. How does this one compare?
Personally think the best North American single malt is balcones. Store pick balcones really blow me away.
Single malt distillery review for sure
Did somebody say single malt? I'd recommend Balcones if you want a big flavor bomb. Stranahans single malt solera cask is my go to regular And if you want a challenging single malt Stone Imperial cask strength, distilled from their Imperial stout it is a whiskey that you can disect for hours.
You should put it next to Deanston Virgin Oak and compare.
For an easy drinking, single malt Scotch, try Tullibardine Artisan (US only release) NAS - it's $24 at Costco. Very easy for an introductory Scotch, similar to Glen Moray, which is also a very easy-to-drink Scotch and also in the $24 price range.
No one real man cares about single malt whiskeys. Real men drink bourbon and soyboys drink single malts.
What is it with Crown Royal with the bags...😀
@atwalhome it was made with the king of England in mind, as he and his entourage were making the royal rounds across Canada. The purple bag gave the bottle an even more regal look and feel.
Stranahans please!
Trenton’s nose is still corrupted by salty ocean air.
Maybe the gnats come in on that birds nest on top of Trent's head?
Holy tan Trenton!!
You guys were too generous...no f'ing way would I pay $55 for that
Grape nuts are whole grain wheat and barley. I can see it.
Almost everything has someone out there that appreciates it’s notes and proof. A perfect example is Jeffersons ocean… one of my favorites. However, I love anything salty. My latest way to enjoy it in a summer cocktail, is a little Fresca, which is grapefruit-based a pinch of salt, optional, and garnish, with a squeeze and a slice of grapefruit. Add ice and stir. Whiskey version of a salty dog.
🙃🫠🎉 for you Jefferson ocean haters we can call it a wet dog lol
Trent tried to fill it to the brim.
No mention of the “good ol’ basement bourbon bar’? 😆
Basement Canadian Whisky Bar
CR Black is way better than base CR, and this might be interesting. Tried Claremont Steep, found it meh. Too many other good single malts to waste $$ on experimentation
maybe i got a bad bottle but i was not a fan of the northern rye. had a chemical taste to it
The Crown BlackBerry was going crazy in my area. They had to drop 6 per week and 1 per person (state allocated) . Selling out instantly. Hype is gone now...but stock is gone. Not my thing.
Same craze in KY and still limited if you can find them currently. I'd like to see SLB review the Blackberry and address the hype.
A guy i work with has killed eight or more of those bottles mixing with lemonade to make a "Snow Cone"..
103 emails is a slow afternoon for me lmao
