From the Underrail website - Underrail is an old school turn-based isometric indie role playing game that focuses on exploration and combat. It's inspired by western RPG classics such as Fallout, Arcanum, Neverwinter Nights and System Shock 2.
The game is set in a distant future, when the life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.
The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught midst the conflicting factions of the Underrail as the violently struggle to survive in the harsh underground environment.
Features
Great character customization possibilities through stats, skills, feats, items and more that allows for many different play-styles
Tactical turn based combat that utilizes weapons, energy shields, grenades, psi abilities and more
Vast underground world to explore: city states, abandoned building complexes, natural caverns, secret areas and more
Elaborate item crafting system - Ігри
The soundtrack was created by Josh Culler. The same guy who did the soundtrack fro NEO Scavenger.
+Jizz Fudgsickle Ah shit, I'm fucking sold then. I loved NEO Scav's music.
Thanks for the info
Hey hey people, Sseth here
But the good thing about RetrospectiveGaming
He's not jewish
sseth does it better... a lot better
You're not the real Sseth...
@@alexoelkers2292 he spent a portion of the review talking about a hobbit. Has it ever occurred to you that you're a moron, and just haven't realised?
@@ttvv88 but he doesn’t make jewish jokes
I'm so glad this game is getting such a positive reception on Steam.
Even though I got it on GoG, the steam crowd is without a doubt where this game will get most of it's attention.
Such a passion project to come out and be made almost entirely by one guy is amazing.
Dejan Radisic and his team should feel very proud of what he achieved.
I've been dying for a game that treads into FOs 1&2 footsteps for a very long time and it makes me so freakin' happy.
The soundtrack by Josh Culler is severely good. He did a great job on Neo Scavenger and he achieves more with this game.
I do have to agree though, that the story kinda leaves me a bit wanting, but I'll be honest I came into this game for the roleplaying, the exploration, the environments and the combat.
If this game is commercially successful enough for Stygian, than I can't wait to see what they'll come up with in the future.
It's developers like Stygian, that truly inspire me and make me hopeful for the future of PC RPGs.
+ripoutyourprejudice Styg did a great job ...I believe there is an incline coming very soon ...with Inexile and other developers making cRPGs I am hopeful about the future
It is basically an excellent spin on Fallout 1-2....something we can never have enough of. The soundtrack is also very good.
+Alonso de Hojeda Love the soundtrack...I was not expecting much from it but i was happy it came out great
Its an awesome game
OR it's fallout 1 and 2 mixed with the leveling of planescape torment.
The game looks really good. Nearly finished Fallout 1. Might check it out afterwards.
Awesome ..You enjoying Fallout 1?
+RetrospectiveGaming Yeah. The gameplay didn't look too good before I tried it but I like how the stats matter more in this game than in Fallout 3 and 4. I also like that this game gives off a different tone than the others. Another cool thing is that The wasteland in this game feels a bit more grim. Which seperartes it from Fallout 3 and 4. For my first CRPG, it's really fun.
I'm brand new to cRPGs and I don't like the Fallout FPS games. I'm at the very end of Wasteland 2: DC and have completed the Shadowrun games. I know Fallout 1 is considered a masterpiece by many, does this Underrail play better than the old Fallouts? I enjoyed WL2 and was thinking about playing Fallout 1, then I saw this and it seemed to be Fallout 3 as a Isometric game. Which would you recommend? I think I'm going to play Planescape next, but I will certainly be playing other cRPGs after,
+Brick Top Baldur's gate .
Arcanum ...
Age of Decadence ..Planescape Torment ...Serpent In The Staglands ...I can also reccomend great Crpgs that aren't isometric ... Vampire the masquerade bloodlines
...knights of the old republic 1 and 2 ...wizardry 8 ...Gothic 1 and 2
DUDE! PLAY FALLOUT 2 B4 U PLAY THIS SHIT!! If u have nearly finished Fallout 1 then go straight to Fallout 2 because its the BEST of the Fallout games by a long shot! Fallout 3 and above are complete dog shit compared to Fallout 2! they have half the content, half the story, half the humor (Fallout 2 has legit adult humor and wasnt made for kids like the new Fallout games).
Whenever I beat the older fallout games il give this game a try for sure
what resolution do you play this at? If i play at 1080p its sharp yeah but play area is tiny (maybe only half of visible screen area. If i play at 1280x768 yea it takes up more screen space but is very blurry hrmmm...
This game looks awesome, can't want to buy it in few months when I get my PC
This game is currently on sale at GOG, this review sealed the deal for me.
I'm glad I could help
Hey do you know of any starting guides/tips videos for this game? It's been sitting in my steam library since it came out and I only out about 6-7 hours into it, and I really wanna give it another shot. Thing is, the game is very hard and from what I've seen creating a good character is crucial to run the game somewhat easily
I reccomend using a PSI build
Still waiting for the Expedition review.
Fantastic review, Che. Would you say it's better than any of the first two Fallout games or on par or not as good?
+The Side Quest Gamer Fallout 1/2 has a better story than Underrail but in terms of Gameplay .. I enjoyed Fallout1/2 and Underrail equally ...Underrail has a great crafting system and I really enjoyed playing as a PSI character ...Overall Fallout1/2 is better but Underrail is still a fantastic game
Thanks to one of my good followers from Twitter for gifting me that game on Steam, I got really hooked up so far. I did chose the game mode of oddity by the way so it make my game pretty different. Right now, I'm going for a gun build with maybe some good aimed shots.
I think once I am completely finished with the Fallout classic games, I'm gonna see if I can squeeze out some time playing UnderRail. The isometric feeling got me flowing on that one. Good review so far. :D
+FunnY Thanks FunnY
RetrospectiveGaming You're welcome. :)
I wanted to point out that the story pacing almost mirror's Fallout 1 exactly. The game starts off small scale (although in Underrail it's not so immediately desperate) but like FO, Underrail blossoms into a MUCH larger story.
I really think that when considering it that way, it truly rewards you for delving in. It doesn't hold your hand (as you said) and that's in regards to story as well. It's there. It's there in subtle ways.
Near the Core City sewers, there's a vault where an ambush occurs and to the east of it, there's a cave full of the electro-spiders.
In the back of that cave, you find a skeleton holding SGS Credits. There are so many subtle things going on in that same vein through the whole game. Who was this? SGS credits aren't used anywhere else, so who was this former member of my station? How'd they end up here? It must have been a while ago, because they're just bones...or maybe the spiders took care of everything else....
It's a very similar thing to what Fallout does (3 comes to mind, although it and 4 are my least favorite in the series)
Loved that you gave the game attention and your review is perfectly fine, just wanted to point out how similar it's pacing is to FO1 in my opinion and offer that perspective.
Bought this when was only at alpha stage, loved it, but never played it again, is it finished already?
Define finished.
Well I plan on buying after playing it my friends house. Do you think this team will do anything in the future?
+That Marty Fella I think they will ...Underrail was in development for a long time so I'm assuming Styg is taking a break until he can think of another game
Could you do a video about weed and your experiences with it?
+MrFrancesc11 Sounds like a good idea.....maybe by the end of the month ... I have to start making more videos
Spread the word, brother.
Anyway, it's weird that you thought the writings is great, while most of the reviews or discussions I've read deemed its' writings as the weak point of this game. I personally thought it's fine, considering the devs were not native English speaker. Also, I personally think the game would benefit greatly with some good voice acting and some form of talking heads.
But still, it's an indie-scale budget so it's still an excellent job. Looking forward to Styg's next project.
Same here ...I'm excited to see what Styg is working on...voice acting or no voice acting ... I'm fine either way but I like what Styg did ...He put a good amount of attention and detail into the dialogue ...I believe 1 person worked on this game so that's pretty impressive
Its so fun to play
Underrail is a really awesome game and I agree with pretty much all you've said,. My only beef with the game is the walking speed, but apart from that, it's awesome :D
+Colonel RPG I agree I wish we could run ...btw I like your channel ..great to see people playing good role playing games
Thank you for saying that :D I'm just doing my bid for the cause :P I love your channel as well!
Now they've added an in-game speed up, up to 5x speed. :D
About how long did it take in order to beat it? Is it like a 50 hour game, or like a 20ish hour one? Just wondering because I'm also thinking about buying Pillars of Eternity and that's a 50 hour game lol. Great review regardless man. Certainly got me interested in it. Love how it's turn based!
+LUGO Thank you LUGO ! I would say anywhere from 40 to 60 hours .. I still have to play Pillars Of Eternity myself ...very excited for that
downloaded and i can't wait to play it
The fact that, if you type in youtube "Underrail review" you get at most half a dozen of em..says something about how hard it is for excellent games to get recognized.
Thankfully recently ssethtzeentach, one of my favorite youtubers, made a review of the expanion allowing people from his large fanbase to discover this gem (also, his videos often get watched on twitch by very well known streamers, giving it even more exposure)
loved the review you're awesome retro keep up the good work.
+vergil jr the son of the son of sparda :) I appreciate the kind words
Its finally here!
:)
You repeat yourself a bit much but overall a good review.
The first time i played this game, it was extremely difficult. Extremely. Every bug I ran into wiped the floor with me. Is this game worth playing with that in mind? Because i quit because of it. Any tips? Suggestions?
Hi StrandingWolf ... This game is really tough in the beginning and slowly gets easier over time ... I would recommend reading this guide.. It helped a friend of mine survive the early game and figure out which build is right for him .. It explains it better than I ever could

Sweet thank you bro. Right now though I'm playing through Arcanum. I'm just bad at RPGs in general though lol. Also, Fallout 1&2 are also on my list.
So I just started a new game on Underrail. I am SOO hyped right now. I'm going with the assassin sort of build. This is cool though. Normally I want to be a strong stealth character in a lot of RPGs but it just doesn't work out due to how the developers designed that portion of the game. But from what I've seen so far, the developers have made stealth in Underrail absolutely beautiful. #LoveStealthGames.
spread the word! This game is amazing.
+Florian Gheorghe I agree! I will do my best to let people know
Nice review. Are you alone the whole game, or do you get a party member eventually?
+Lex De Poorter No companions ....but you do fight along people sometimes
How does it compare to fallout?
The beginning is slowly ?? I have 30 hours now and i just was intruduced to the faceless !
is there VA
Damned good review man, subscribed. Love your avatar too, Lord of Hunger
+urbium Thank you! ...damn right! I love Darth Nihilus :)
RetrospectiveGaming Inasmuch as I'd like to see a follow up to KOTOR 2, I almost feel it's perfect and complete as it is (with Stony's patch, of course) and anything more would injure it far more than it would assist it. I'd still buy it though. lol.
Obsidian might be making a sequel to Bloodlines, though. If that happens I'd pretty much be on action RPG cloud nine for the foreseeable future.
games graphics and approach to combat and dialogue reminds me of Geneforge by spiderweb
Oh ffs, I just finished Shadowrun series, I didn't know this game existed
great review! keep it up
Thank you!
i had this on my wishlist for 6+ years. came on sale for 3 dollars. Meant to buy it when it came out, wish i did then. This is fallout 2 levels of quality.
Your reviews are like drinking beer with my stoner best friend while he tells me about the newest game he is playing. I mean this as a compliment.
great review, man
If I'm not mistaken, most of the game was created by one dude.
True
I halfway and loving it. very good game, even if sometimes it is too brutal. I never died so much in a rpg.
Thank you for the great review!
+Кирилл Сахаров Thank you for watching
Good review, thanks!
+Ghrail :)
I'm waiting for your Gothic 2 NotR review :)!
did u know that this is game was started by one programmer more than 10 years ago/ he later got some help. its rly great that it finaly finished.
+Mario Sonora Thanks for the info! its amazing that 1 person did a majority of the work
Would you say this game is better than Fallout 2?
Can u review Pillar Of Eternity?
+iMoxy Gaming Soon :)
RetrospectiveGaming awesome bro
i guess i have to check it out
I reccomend it :)
You have no idea how many times I click on "Undertale" instead of this game by accident while browsing my Steam library.
awesome game, has soul and quality :]
Hey hey people....this game is suddenly popular
yup
Wasteland 2 has proven crpg's can succesfully be transforred to consoles, as did Divinity Original Sin btw. I'd like to see Underrail released for these mediums too.
+fIFJBGRDBJFR I absolutely agree, not to mention the amount of exposure the game will get on PSN.
That would be nice ...I think it can work on consoles
oh hell yeah especially since i dont have a pc yet but i do have a ps4
I'm at the crash site at Seal Beach in Los Angelas right now. Pretty solid game. How long is Underrail? I don't know if I should play Fallout 1or Underrail. I don't have the slightest intention of playing Fallout FPS so even tho the story matters a lot to me in games I'm not really attached to the universe and I was wondering if this game played like a smoother version of Fallout 2 or something.
Brick Top
It's quite a bit different than Fallout.
Fallout 1&2 are open-world games and they can last you a long time if you plan to explore everything.
The thing about the first 2 fallout games is that the quests themselves have multiple ways to finish them and have multiple outcomes.
So just 1 side-quests can be played in at least 6 or 7 diferrent ways.
Underrail is the shorter game, but it still has a lot of depth and it has again a lot of replay value based especially on the new progression system that is based on artifact collecting rather than typical level-ups and stat upgrades.
Underrail is now even better following the recent patch! BUY THIS GAME NOW WTF
+yosharian I agree ...support the developer!
I've spent about 5-6 hours in the game but I've given up unfortunately. I'm not a very skilled gamer and I can't do anything in the game because everything kills me...
Yepp thats pretty much undrail unless you build a PERFECT build you have to start over
If your gonna play this go to the forums and pick a build
Becuse if you pick a build that is not 100% optimal they game basicly locks you out
I like this game BUT IT'S SO FUCKING HARD seriously I had to go back and do several new game pluses and it's still hard other than that I like it
What kind of build you playing?
my usual build for an RPG gunslinger smooth talker and I try to be a tech expert
When I first saw this game, it only had one thing that made it interesting: the feeling of the old Amstrad/MSX2 isometric graphics, but after watching your review, it now have the feeling of the old CRPG's "learn how to survive on by youself or go cry to your mother" Trade Mark (for example, most of Black Isle/BioWare old school jandra), and THAT makes it better than 97% of the AAA RPG's released in the last 8 years (fact is, Under Rail feels more Fallout than Fallout 4).
I surely can buy it but I CANT play it because I need more RAM, .... and the required RAM for the game is the fucking maximum that my Mainboard can handle D: .... yes, I have to update this PC for the Fred Fucks sake! :(
Anywho, nice review over there :3
+Fury Rage Thank you Fury ...and I complain about my setup when you are surviving with a worse rig than mine ...hopefully you can upgrade soon
theres going to be a new expansion, the keyword is expansion not DLC becasue they added new weapons types, new things to use new drugs new everything and story!
Kudos!!
+Charlie Wood Cheers!
"Don't give a fuck about stealth"..... WTF, Che. WTF.
Anyways, a hidden gem I seemed to have missed, wouldn't be the first, but I will have to check this out someday.
As always good review, Che. The game looks like one I could get into.
Edit: another point I think you missed with modern RPGs, and I am going to throw my beloved TES series under the bus here, but when enemies level up with you and you never get to really feel powerful. Or when you get the best armor in the game and the enemy is still slaughtering you like your a pussy. (granted that there are moments as well where I do feel like a bad ass, buy I can only kill so many wolfs)
+DravenWolfe Eh.. you're never going to feel like a god in this game. But the enemy levels are static
Jizz Fudgsickle well, I don't mean you have to feel like a God, but as Che was saying, you feel the difference when you level up. I really just meant that, I suppose I worded it wrong.
I suck at being stealthy :) I just can't do it and...what did you think of daggefall?
+RetrospectiveGaming Yeah, being stealthy takes a bit of patients I suppose, I'm pretty good at just sitting there and observing enemies before attacking. Though I am quickly learning that Archery + High Stealth = Broken, when it comes to Skyrim. I have won many battles just by being cheap. :P .
As for Daggerfall, haven't gotten to it yet, I was playing Arena but got really busy, and haven't returned to it yet. Ended up playing Skyrim. :P
NPCs just standing around all day long waiting for the player to click on them worked in the mid 90's, but seem really dated today. If I want an old-school RPG I just fire up Fallout or Icewind Dale.
I played the game probably about 200 hours, and i must afirm one thing he lied: persuasion doenst even matter you can rotate the game arround it, it does help on giving shortcuts but you can counterplay it with another means, making it the most wastefull score skill on your build.... And its a hardcore game you going miss those points on sweet helpfull stuff wich is combat and crafting wich come more handy even in roleplaying with a lot of craft roll checks rather than talk check that can be counterplayed with doing stuff first for the npc, not kidding you can literaly succed many intimidation and persuasion check wighout having the skill by doing something else first.(edit) forgot to mention: intimidation is not that bad because you can even use it in combat with related perks, and this game can be frustrating and theres no peacefull ways to solve every shit, just 20% of the game can be peace friendly, so expect to kill every danm thing even on oddity, everything else he said is a total truth.
Nice review, this is definitely one of the best games of recent years.
Thanks! .. I can't wait for the expansion pack
When you gonna review fallout 4
+Deez Nuts When I'm able to play it I will review it ASAP
RetrospectiveGaming Alright thanks for answering dude.
+RetrospectiveGaming It's a shit game, don't bother.
do you jut not have a keyboard or something haha ?
i would not enjoy this. i prefer simpler systems.
and great characters and story.
*Shadowrun* (SNES) for example. i love that game.
Underrail does look good, but it's not for me.
I have some reccomendations for you then. Undertale (the friendly RPG where nobody has to die, you might have heard of it), Live A Live (an interesting prototype to Chronotrigger, Japan only, but there is a fan translation on ye ole interwebs if SNES emulation is your thing), Wax Works (Gore and Horror warning, don't play if that isn't your thing), and Toejam and Earl (though Roguelites aren't everybody's preferred type of RPG, I just can't get enough of the game, it's hip-hop soundtrack, and unusual EXP system that revolves more around exploration and trial + error than fighting, play it if you have yet to)
I played it once and died to rats and I haven't brought myself to give it another try.
Fucking rats.
+Gardevoir God damn rats ... I feel your pain
And you can screw up your character and make the game Unwinnable.
Prefer team based RPGs.
The game is fantastic, don't get me wrong. But i hate the visuals. This game looks worse than Jagged Alliance 2. Mainly due to the assets. Think about JA2, where all assets got just a HD blow job. It ruins the art style.
Hell, Fallout 1&2 has smooth edges. In UnderRail everything is edgy, literally. Its looks bad. You don't need Cryengine graphics. But if you can't deliver, then you need at the very least Art Style! This game, has neither! Still love to play it. Its just pisses me off to look at it.
u forgot to mention awful endgame. fucking deep caverns. =/ still, great review.
Thanks for watching! ....I didn't have that much of an issue with the deep caverns ...maybe I just got lucky with my PSI build
kawaii ;__
UnderRail = UnderTale
Ha HA HA HA UnderRail wait this is a game its has nothing to do with Undertale well
Lol I hear that alot :)
IF ANYONE WATCHING THIS VIDEO HASNT PLAYED FALLOUT 2 THEN YOUR INSANE! This game doesnt even compare to Fallout 2 and F2 is the best of all Fallout games if not the best RPG in soooo many years! The new Fallout games were missing 90% of what made Fallout 2 so good, the story is 100x better, the adult humor, the adult violence. weapons, combat and character interaction doesnt compare! look at F76, what a joke!!
Fallout 1 and 2 even looks way better. While it's almost 20 years older. Lol
Hey hey hey Sseth here!!))
I can't take this seriously... Underrail... God change the name.
Call it whatever you like ...I recommend playing it ..there is an expansion coming out early next year
Currently watching an LP of it to get a sense of the early game.
Good idea
or better yet
don't
This game is too hard. Not even fun. Wich is a shame because I love the atmosphere and graphics.
i just had to reload my quicksave around 30 times to get past a SINGLE low-life mugger
and this is on normal with decent armor, weapon and stats
which encapsulates this game perfectly, quicksave and load simulator
You can tell just from the main start up page, that underrail is A. A metro 2033 and metro last light knock off. B. The name sounds like undertale.
Try it out when it goes on sale ...you will see that Underrail is different from Metro
the games looks great an all, but i really cant stand turn based combat
Fallout 1 has better graphics than this. GG.
Play the game Rhe ...its waiting for you
I'm sorry I just can't stand the narrators voice, accent, and mispronounciation. He also repeats himself repeatedly...
