Looks a lot like Survival Aftermath. Too many survival builder ended up just being regular town builders with a linear tech tree just with a post apocalypse skin. The idea of scavenging pre-fall tech is quickly replaced as your tiny woodland community starts pumping out electronics and modern weapons like you can make a cnc machine by rubbing two toasters and a plank together.
Events also suck. If it isn't just something that just affects one stat like say now your villagers are getting sick or whatever, it's rudimentary fighting. Man one of these games needs serious defences like trenches, barbed wire, traps, walls and so on. Events that impact your society in many ways are also cool. I don't know, surely there can be more to these games.
Try Anno 1800, that game feels alot different to me than titles like this. Cities Skylines also is good due to the amount of customization to a city you can do. I dont think many devs have found a really good outside the box formula. Maybe Frostpunk and cant forget, They Are Billions. That game is fucking insane.
Whenever I see a colony survival/city builder I can't help but think how cool it would be to have it set in certain universes, like fallout or witcher for example.
If only the big companies were more exploratory with their IPs. Don't hold your breath with Bethesda. Sadly, the truly creative people don't have that control. There could be multiple other Fallout games within different genres. It's a shame.
Bethesda wants to make people to pay them for mods that modders created without Bethesda help and you are thinking they will let anyone touch Fallout...
There are some that are close to what you are asking for. “Gord” is one example I know of. An extremely witcheresque universe down to the style of music. Splattercat covered it on here at some point not that long ago
@@Ninja40K Manor Lords' Demo was incredible. I haven't bought a city builder or survival city builder since I played the demo. Waiting over a year now and I cry every day until it releases lol
Surviving the Aftermath has an overworld map and disaster events to spice things up but otherwise does everything except the Frostpunk society choices. New Cycle needs to go a long way to encourage me to spend money on it when StA and Endzone (and Frostpunk) exist. I wish the devs the best in getting to that point and carving out their own identity.
looks solid i have high hopes for this but it does seem there is not much other then city management atm, no real post apocalyptic enemies or disaster aftermaths you name it in the long term yet.
I have appreciated all your videos Splat! As an old-school gamer who started in the late 70's, I have frequently found some nice indie gems on your channel. So, I thought I'd pass one along to you and the community named Archaelund. It is an old-school party-based CRPG in the vein of the old Might & Magic games. 1st person view for exploring, and overhead tactical turn-based grid combat. It just entered early access on Jan 8th, and has some promise. Dev has a previously successful shipped game.
The sort of thing I enjoy in these games is choice. I want to be able to build whatever city I wish, with no "good side!" and "bad side!" but a bit of actual grey-area.
This game is REALLY nice. There have been some colony sims out there who missed the mark because of questionable decisions. But this one is already looking promising.
Unique buildings vs multi or procedural modeling: I would definitely say it depends on what it is. In most city builders I see, the housing is just... housing. People live there and sometimes have to path to and from it, but it doesn't really matter when it comes to checking for supply chain issues. Things that are supply chain oriented like whatever factories or the like you use, should have little if any variance*, particularly if it's something with complex hook ups like in something like Captain of Industry. The main exception I can think of is when you have a generalized building that specializes or upgrades over time like a generic factory that spits out machine parts or something. One thing I do wish more city builders would do would be to integrate the z-axis more like Timberborn. Or would allow for more refined building construction like allowing for expandable or joint housing.
I heard that this game has some similarities to Frostpunk and after this video I can agree on that. BTW good video and I wish to be UA-camr like you! Keep up good job!
Deveopers of similar titles have their work cut out for them, to get something interesting out before Manor Lords later this year. I do think that those who aim for a bit more demanding survival and a more grim setting have a chance.
Yeah, if I had a survival city builder in the works, I'd either release *right now* or know that I'm going to have to wait a long while to be viable again and should use that time for polish and some angle or mechanic that sets me apart if I don't already have one. Manor Lords is going to absolutely dominate the genre, no two ways about it.
I always love the look of these type of games, and I always end up trying them, but dammit if I am not so terrible at them that I kill everyone within an in game year. :D
biggest thing that bugs me about games like this, is the super flat terrain. dunno if other maps have elevation changes or not, but super flat just doesnt do it for me. i dont need giant mountains, but give us more than flat. other than that, looks fun.
Looks cool. Nothing innovative that I can tell but maybe I'm wrong. I'd like to see the research process go differently. This has been done a thousand times. Pick one, wait, pick another. I'd like something more dynamic, like multiple things being researched at a time and passively, or a combo of both. Have specialists trained and maybe they learn things as you go and you get small buffs for having them.
Splat you should play songs of syx. If you like rinworld/dwar fortress type games, you'll love it. I found out about it on Steam a week ago, and I can't put it down. Solo developer too
After Surviving the Aftermath and Endzone: A World Apart, the apocalypse city builder space is getting kinda crowded with not much setting them apart. I give them credit, but genre crowding in indie is starting to become a real issue, even with niche genres.
It seems like such a small thing, but the identical buildings really make the game way worse in my mind. Some low poly games are not that affected by that in my mind, but these realistic looking ones just look wrong, if there are no different models. Imo, you could just have the same "base" building model and randomize a couple of decorations to get some sort of a realistic feel to your colony.
Sadly yet another grid locked city builder, seems like all these devs miss what makes games like Foundation and Manor Lords so appealing. Grid locked and road based gameplay should only be for more modern titles that reflect their era, give us layout freedom in our medieval/apoc builders.
Marketers have convinced us that a sponsored unboxing video is a product review, so of course we see a 30 minute first impressions video and think its a thorough review. May just be the only thing we get, and the closest thing to an actual review we've seen in ages.
"I know for a fact i can't go more than 30 days wout food before i expire." which is why we now have splattercat 2.0. "I do not do reviews!" splattercat 1.0 did reviews. then he stopped eating for 30 days. coincidence?

Try Pioneers of Pagonia. It's different, but in a good way. Still early access I believe but the build I played a month or two was already pretty deep for E.A. Also like most I'm hyped for Manor Lords.

The bigger problems is that such games are never balanced!
Events also suck. If it isn't just something that just affects one stat like say now your villagers are getting sick or whatever, it's rudimentary fighting.

Man it really feels like these city builders havent evolved at all since Banished. They just keep re-making that game with slight tweeks.
Against the storm is one I would argue is an exception to this

I just want Banished with more depth.
look at manor lords and farthest frontier these are the true hybrids combining city management with RTS.
My problem is most don't have good "downtime" activities or time takes way too long to pass
I feel like the title process is working, Game name is there today.
Always appreciate your awareness Splat. Keep on brotha
Seconded. ❤
Thirded
Finally some post-apoc builder made with art style and lighting

that would be pretty fun to play

Or even a Dead Space city building RTS.
I'm pretty hype and excited for this game. Thanks for covering this one Splat!
Ever since the Manor Lords Next Fest Demo, my money has stayed in my pocket. It's a double edged sword. The end of April can't come soon enough.
Seriously, it isn't good?
@@Ninja40K Manor Lords' Demo was incredible. I haven't bought a city builder or survival city builder since I played the demo. Waiting over a year now and I cry every day until it releases lol
Same. I think it's the oldest title on my wishlist. The demo pressed all the right buttons for me.

Imagine a world without Splat, what a dark world it would be
looks solid i have high hopes for this but it does seem there is not much other then city management atm, no real post apocalyptic enemies or disaster aftermaths you name it in the long term yet.
There will be catastrophic events happening like sandstorms, plagues or more solare flares
I like when the buildings are varied, but there's also a way (toggle or when zoomed out) to make them more visually distinct.
"I dont think I need a tutorial." ~Guy who absolutely, 100%, _guaranteed_, needs a tutorial.

The UI is a spitting image of Frostpunk. If it is the same developer, I missed that.
The sort of thing I enjoy in these games is choice. I want to be able to build whatever city I wish, with no "good side!" and "bad side!" but a bit of actual grey-area.
What the... this straight up looks like Frostpunk, Surviving Aftermath and Banished Mechanics just jumbled together.
A New Cycle first impressions, I see what you did there... :) Best wishes on you and all the nerds of the castle, dear friend!!!
This game is REALLY nice. There have been some colony sims out there who missed the mark because of questionable decisions. But this one is already looking promising.

Looks interesting - thank you for showcasing it.
We need electricity for these buildings.

...now let's get into the Iron Age!
Nothing like a good, seasoned steak in a madeira sauce with portobello mushrooms.
It feels a lot like "Surviving the aftermath" or is that just me....?
The UI and the events screams "frostpunk" to me.
Based on the other campaign, I would guess that is the direction they want to go.
Feels like somebody saw Frostpunk and thought it was too unforgiving.
NGL I thought this was different postapocalyptic survival game, they look so similar...
Thanks for showcasing. ^^
Pretty sure I've played this before with a different name and different graphics.
Also, good on you for gardening and growing your own food.
OH MY LORD! Its finally coming!!!!
I love the look
Bruh I love when you do voices. I really miss your let's play days.
LOL everyone look down and check . . . Splatty!
Hi there. There is pretty cool minecraft-like, but authentic game named "Vintage Story". Can you please do a review for it?
I heard that this game has some similarities to Frostpunk and after this video I can agree on that. BTW good video and I wish to be UA-camr like you! Keep up good job!
Im happy brown is in vogue again.
strike a pose!

it hurt when you placed that shack over a road...

more closer to anno games than frostpunk, Seems like alot of this kind of game is on its way out this year

this look like a reskin of paradox city building game

This game seems an awful lot like the already existing game - Surviving the Aftermath
nice

Anyone who’s tried this? Better or worse than Endzone?
oh look
its colony sim # 235253246346346
with copy paste techtree and buildings
Only someone like Splattercat could say "I don't think I need a tutorial," and we'd be like, "Yep, he's right about that." 😊
this people being awfully demanding for postapoccalipse worlds lol
UI stolen from Frostpunk?
The down time before the iron age looks like a warning sign, I hope Dev will consider some fillers in a form of minigames or something.
Really couldn't stand this game for more than 2 hours. It really is a grind for the sake of grind. All about increasing numbers not the settlement
Lol, Splat got plastered, lol
Jesus Christ...RTS games keep coming out like fast food.
