@Isaac Ortiz Mariah has the best musicality there is. She is a perfectionist. She won't do outsinging WHEN UNNECESSARY. She only does something that would make the song or the concert beautiful.
Like in this concert, she could outsing ALL OF THEM, but she didn't sing that much-maybe she thought it was too noisy already since these singers were trying to outsing one another.

I got this video on vhs and everytime I see it I can only hear Mariah and well know her part starting at 4:48, she invented live a her own new melody respecting the #beautiful, original one

That was a beautiful duet to be honest. I like Laura and there is something in her voice that I like so much. Mariah cannot be compared to anybody. Mariah has her own way of delivering her lines beautifully. The most beautiful voice/tone in the world.

If they didn't mess up at 2:03 and the music technicians didn't lower Mariah's mic volume, especially on the first whistle, this would have been epic. The dubbed version doesn't even include Melanie's part and Mariah's voice is incorporated much less.

Mariah is very respectful of veteran singers, she knows she owes them a lot, remember her Vh1 Divas 1998 she never tried to outsing anybody although nobody there could even get close to her vocal range. With Whitney I don't think they tried either, When you believe was meant to have that Whitney was the central on point voice and Mariah playing at the extremes of the tessiture. So Mariah had the job of singing an octave higher or below and find her way through mellisma in order to meet Whitney halfway. The part that's "says hope is very neeeear" Whitney has a sustained note but Mariah has to do an ascending arpeggio all the way to her upper chest belting without mixing until she say "miracles" again and her high head voice in "believe" both times Whitney's goes very low to Make Mariah shine. That's how it was meant to be, both showing off their ability but also proving they can meet halfway. Whitney had a more bodied voice so she was perfect for the central voice of the climax, but Mariah is the only one with enough proficiency able to sing in the extremes of her range indefinitely and have her registers connected to meet Whitney and still not get outshined by Whitney's power. We'll never see a duet like that again, never ever, it simply worked in every single way you can think off. The best vocalists, belting a song about faith and injustice to a race they are black and mixed, they respected each other for their strengths and never hesitated to pick the other one up, their voices simply sound perfect together and of course it had to win an Oscar
You can see how Mariah and Gloria professionally singing this song without a sense of competing. Anyway, I hate the camera angle. It’s too distracting and annoying.

Yeah in the official dubbed version they completely silenced Mariah in the part, and when If notice when Laura sings “when we” and she stops , I’m assuming she was supposed to sing the next part but she was quiet and Mariah answered her but on the dubbed someone else responded and Mariah couldn’t be heard
