What a Living Whale Is Worth -- and Why the Economy Should Protect Nature | Ralph Chami | TED
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 гру 2022
- How much is one living blue whale worth in the fight against climate change? A lot more than you may think, says financial economist Ralph Chami. He explains the value of bringing the language of dollars and cents to conservation -- and offers his vision of a new economy that would profit off regenerating nature, not extracting from it.

Sad modern society only knows the language of dollars. Can't recognise the intrinsic value of nature, our symbiotic relationship and justs sees it as a resource. Great talk.
Valid point.
Why isn't this on every news network?
Partly because it's utter nonsense.
Facts, ive watched this 5x already
*>>> Stocks are falling and bond yields are rising, but markets still don’t seem convinced the Federal Reserve will pursue plans to keep increasing interest rates until inflation is under control. I'm still at a crossroads deciding if to liquidate my $117k stocck portfolio, what’s the best way to take advantage of this bear market?*
That's impressive! I could really use the expertise of this advisor, my portfolio has been stagnant.... Who’s the person guiding you
>>>invest in Blue Whale Stocks and Bonds. Can I suggest a personal favourite of mine - BigMauriceAtlantic PLC UK 🤣🤣🤣
Brilliant ideas. Let's do it.
This is a major discovery in our grasp.
There are so many of these right now no one should be without hope
BRILLIANT! Carbon offsets for whales and elephants!
If this helps save both Elephants and Whales , I would be most pleased , indeed .
I've close encounters with each species - of the marine mammals, more than 1 species - and they are happy to interact , as long as they are not threatened .
Amazing talk 🎉🙏🏻❤️✨🙏🏻
As the Assistant Deputy Director of the International Monetary Fund's Institute for Capacity Development, I have had the opportunity to study the economic value of various natural resources, including living whales.
After conducting thorough research and analysis, it is clear that the worth of a living whale is immeasurable. While it is possible to assign a monetary value to certain aspects of a whale's existence, such as its role in ecotourism or its potential to generate income through whale watching or other forms of exploitation, these figures do not come close to capturing the full worth of a living whale.
Whales play a vital role in maintaining the health and balance of the marine ecosystem. They are top predators that help regulate the populations of other species, and their waste serves as a source of nutrients for other organisms. The loss of a single whale can have far-reaching consequences on the entire ecosystem.
In addition to their ecological value, whales also have a cultural and spiritual significance for many communities around the world. They are revered as symbols of strength, intelligence, and grace, and have inspired art, literature, and music for centuries.
In conclusion, the worth of a living whale is immeasurable and cannot be reduced to a single monetary value. Protecting and preserving these magnificent creatures is not only a moral obligation, but also a vital investment in the health and well-being of our planet.
This is amazing! Spread this video!
what a lovely idea
That's wonderful and directly hit at the head when you put it in dollars. Yes, we need to think how to invest in places like Gabon to curb carbon emission instead of wasting money in luxury meetings and conference.
Inspiring amazing idea!
A weak dollar can signal an economic downturn, making me to ponder on what are the best possible ways to hedge against inflation, and I've overheard people say inflation is a money-eater thus worried about my savings around $200k
The stock market is a way to hedge against inflation. Most notably amidst recession, investors need to understand where and how to allocate funds to hedge against inflation and still make profits.
Despite bitcoin’s recent fall in value, Mrs Julia Oswin keep making $50k profits of my investment weekly. I have aviation sector recovers from pandemic restrictions.
People prefer to spend money on liabilities, rather than investing in assets and be profitable.I don't know who needs to hear this! Stop relying on the government and savings. Invest some of your money if you want financial stability, the pandemic has thought us the importance of having several streams of income.
As a beginner who don't understand how crypto trade really works and you really want to make profit from it. I will advise you to first start working with a professional
This is impressive, I lost almost $80k on trading!!! Please any help with best advises on how to make money on cryptos? I'm open for ideas..
Thnx
Nature is everything
Are this numbers taking into account the CO2 exhaled during the entire lifetime? I have no idea if it´s much or not, but just wondering
Great of view
Incredible interesting theme
great vro
Wow a cool bean counter imagine that 😁
W O W !
Instead of focusing on mission mars, we should primarily focus on our mother earth...
Meanwhile quite close to where I live, villages are getting torn down to dig up the coal under them.
Just commenting to get this video more attention.
Important Statement for the whales and wildlife dividends!
'La Pachamama' thanks you
He looks like the one ruusian doctor: Alexander Myasnikov.
سبحان الله الحي القيوم رب كل شيء ومليكه
That is an idea , although we don't need economy to protect nature. Just protect it.
What about corruption that is struggling these countries ? Valuation of nature won't be making advantages to the powerful and the richs (as always) ? This idea seems to be a smooth utopia so far...
That's a good point. If the revenue goes to the goverment (which owns that land) but this gov is corrupt then it will not increase the standard of living for the pop., just for the power elite
Well because the creators whole goal is to protect nature and reduce carbon, so they probably care about corruption and misuse of funds and fully intend on mediating misuse of funds and then you get governments involved who are putting money into who can also help with fund transparency.
Hi Ralf I really enjoyed this video.
I have always wondered about the approximate economic cost to the state bring up a child in a broken home - a child who probably has 1 or more siblings to a unemployed single mother on welfare or other social benefit?
BTW some sharks also sink. So we can invest not only in whale stocks, but be a loan shark.
Plant tree save tree save planet 🌍🌎🌏
Now, where can i invest in Catacean Bonds? It will be money whale spent.

This is cool but I don't like that he just pulls out those numbers out of a hat. Like could we understand how did he make those calculations?

The Creator(God) has created every creature to facilitate human being. Thanks Almighty and thank you so much Mr.Ralph for sharing eye opening knowledge around the globe. Love & respect from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Science is my God.
That kind of thinking is why the world is the mess it is.
this is a very simplistic assumption. Whales also breath out carbon dioxide. And when whale dies what does he mean by squestered ? The body would burst after it sinks and the carbon would be released back to the sea. We need to fight climate change but not by these simplitics 15 min presentations
fact one whale will feed 10,000 Japenese, and they actually hurt the environment by the amount of krill they eat because the krill eat so much plankton with uses carbon dioxide
People don't need whale meat to survive. Eating whales is just plain wrong and illegal.
@@elvytan4682 tell that to the Japenese
@@joesmith-tg3co cool story...so therefore kill all the whales so there is none left...whales damage the environment what BS...
Who hurts the environment - the whales or the Japanese?
@@agatarudd335 actually the whales, by eating krill, there is a well done per review study on nature, but it gets shut down by Green Peace
This is a scam
