The Popy beach area in Las Terrenas is only a 10-minute walk from downtown. Popy beach is filled with lots of things to see and do:great restaurants, beach bars, night-life, music, dancing, and the local people love to have fun here on the weekends.I am a solo traveller and felt safe walking the main street at night, well-lit in most places. Use common-sense; take a scooter cab later at night.

In this video, I walk along the promenade from my apartment at Hotel Oasis, on Benelux Avenue (see my Apartment Tour video) along the main road towards Punta Popy. Along the way, I show you the types of apartments available, hotels, typical local scenes, and restaurants.
The tour ends at Hotel Afreeka, a popular, funky, affordable hotel and apartments. Every Monday night, Hotel Afreeka hosted a free Bachata and salsa dance lesson, at 7 pm., led by Frank Mendez, a local dance instructor. After the class, he and his dance assistants took turns dancing with the women who attended the class, so we could practice what we learned! They were very professional, courteous and fun!
Dominican Bachata music is listed as an important Intangible Cultural Heritage with UNESCO. I stayed in Las Terrenas because it has an amazing variety of Latin dance clubs.

Thank you for your videos as a solo traveller who often goes to Mexico I would like to check out the DR! As a solo traveller do you prefer Cabarete or Las Terrenas? Both seem very attractive to me however the calm waters of LT look more swimmable and Cabarete looks more exciting! Thanks again ;))
sorry for replying late. From what I have heard and seen, Cabarete is very busy, crowded beaches, and windy and waves.Famous for kite-boarding. LT more low-key, and tons of salsa and bachata dancing, and has a more intimate atmosphere. You could always do a day trip from LT to Cabarete. Really depends on your interests.
