Craig Charles' delivery of "with our red alert bulb" is just the most British comedy thing ever.
"I couldn't buy it, then?"
"Not really, I need it to turn the lights on and off."
CLASSIC!
That's such a good line.
Lawl. Love that bit.
It’s so simple but the delivery is so good that’s it’s one of the funniest things ever.
This moment is forged into my memory and as a former art student when ever I need to tell the world how meaningless art is, I am drawn to this moment.
@@TheCompleteGuitarist
Art doesn't really need a meaning, does it. It's just fun.
Legion has just such a 1970s/80s Doctor Who vibe about him.
It must be the budget
Rimmer's description of the switch could almost be a nod to City of Death
Yes, he reminds me of Chameleon from the Peter Davison era.
Cyberman except more civil
@@stephencaesar6475He reminds me of The Dish of the Day from immediately before the Peter Davison era :)
you just know that the only reason they gave Rimmer a hard light drive was so that they would have an excuse to throw things at Chris Barrie and hit him.
XD PROBABLY
And also to allow Rimmer to grab a Bazookoid and blow up the time drive
Lol I dont remember commenting this 😂😂😂😂😂
Chris: :’D
Who doesn't want to hit Rimmer? 😄
Just love the way Legion says ‘The light switch’ 😂
Its the slightly extended "the" I think.
Legion was one of the best characters of all the whole series
Not as good as Pete Tranter's sister.
Totally agree. Awesome character. I would’ve stayed if only fit the holodeck 👍
"How absolutely divine, Légion" - classic.
The light switch gag aside, this line is brilliant. It's this streak of pretentiousness that seems to be missing from Rimmer's character in the newer series, as well as his desperation and self-doubt.
And later "Caravagyo".
Bitterness @@Zerobob26
I would quite like to see the "often lethal Mercurian boomerang spoon". Classic.
apparently doctor who has a very similar boomerang spoon used by a race called the androgum
Personally I'd be interested to see how you'd use the Jovian boogle hoops, after all the boomerang spoon albeit lethal sounds fairly self explanatory in operation.
What is the fatality rate for the Mercurian Boomerang Spoon? 1 in 3?
Best line in this episode:
Are you sure sir? it does mean changing the bulb!
"Thee light switch...I couldn't buy it then...not really ,I need it to turn the lights on and off"... has there ever been a more low fi, brilliant piece of script than this? And I am including Terry and June in this.
When I first saw this episode I was literally crying with laughter, especially during the chopsticks scene.
“The often lethal, Mercurian Boomerang Spoon” 😂😂
Always loved that line.
One of the greatest Sci-Fi shows ever made, comedy or otherwise.
Should have posted this whole dinner scene it's priceless, Legion is one of the best Red Dwarf episodes ever!
Rimmer wanting to buy a light switch is funnier than the audience makes it out to be
Props to kryten for saying the often lethal mercurian boomerang spoon line without dying laughing.
That spoon could have been an episode by its self 😅
"...and what a team we'd make. Legion with his scientific genius, intellect, culture and sophistication, and us with............with........."
"......with our red alert bulb."
This may be my favourite episode....too hard to choose though.
Legion does the best Stephen Fry impression I've heard.
This is one of my favourite ever episodes, it was just so exciting when Rimmer became hard light and changed colour! The episode also has a clever story, good character, and great jokes. But perhaps the thing I liked most about this episode was the sets, which are bright, clean, attractive and aspirational, much nicer than the usual "grungey" alien sets they would visit. One thing I think let series X down was the sets, which I thought were grungey, dark, cluttered and industrial. I wish they would just go back to the beautiful Officer's quarters from series 3-5. That set was perfect, it could be lit in all sorts of different ways, and it really made the characters stand out.
Leave it to UA-cam commenters to explain the video like we aren't watching it
Really agree! It's a different feeling completely
when I very first saw this episode I didn't even notice that his uniform had changed colour!🙂
I actually like the grungy sets as, despite being a sitcom, Red Dwarf is still set in a cyberpunk universe
@@SamuelBlack84
Grungy was better. It was almost as if it was...a mining ship.
Best scene in Red Dwarf EVER!
The light switch, I couldn't buy it then. Not really, I need it to turn the lights on and off!!!
I love that scene.
''The pointy stick game doesn't get a look-in anymore''
when I saw "Light Switch" by Ceal Floyer at the Tate Modern Gallery I immediately remembered this bit in Red Dwarf
Say what you want about sci-fi sitcoms, but Red Dwarf has some great jokes and lines you can use in everyday life, which is what it's all about.
I always keep a couple of Mercurian Boomerang Spoons in my drawers for special occasion!
The Boomerang Spoon thing sounds dangerous! I'd give it a go!
I'm 15 years old and I love this programme!! The gags are soo funny even after uve watched them a 1000 times!
You're 27 now. Anything interesting happen in those 12 years?
"Not really... I made it to turn the lights on and off"
I've NEVER seen slapstick done better than this! The look on Chris Barie's face at the end is Priceless!
So funny when the giant fur ball is heading towards Kryten's mouth.
And the green booger like thing splattering on Rimmer.
Rimmer: Now this 3-dimensional sculpture in perticual, is quite exquistit, it's simplististy, its bold start lines. Prey what do you call it?
Legion: the lightswitch
rimmer: the lightswitch
legion: yes
rimmer:i couldn't buy it then
legion: no not really i need it to turn the lights on
Brilliant!!!!!!
love this episode. so funny.
"I need it to turn the lights on and off." xD
i cannot wait for more red dwarf :D these guys are brilliant!
When I was a kid watching this, the Mimosian telekinetic wine tasted of marshmallows.
“My name is Legion, for we are many!” Cool line.
Just because I look like Herman Munster's stuntman doesn't mean that I can't appropriate art, sir.😂
*appreciate. Muppet.
*appreciate
@@stefanjevtic7175 Evil auto spell checker, it's more vicious than Talkie Toaster. 😁
"Your pleasure and pain responses remain the same, but you cannot come to harm"
In other words congratulations, it's now possible to torture you forever
This was the second episode I ever watched.
The first was Gunmen of the Apocalypse.
Good start.
The often lethal Mercurian boomerang spoon. :-D
lol I am recently watching this on DVD and I watched this bit over and over :D
haha an enlightened few of us can appreciate it... i only wish this show was still broadcast here!
“Just because I look like Herman Munster’s stunt man doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate art, sir.” I love Kryten. 🤣🤣
I think Legion is probably the funniest episode, mainly for this scene and the meal. Makes me laugh the hardest even though I've seen it a hundred times.
Probably bc I can't quite recall what goes wrong, but I would 100% spend my time hanging out with Legion
The first time I saw this the light switch joke stayed with me forever.
I SO need my own "red alert bulb"!!
No matter how many times one watches the series, Rimmer never becomes any less of a tool does he?
Well, have you seen the season X final?
The face Chris Barrie pulls at the end reminds me of Oliver Hardy
"How do you land the damn stuff"?
"Simply invert the ionic flow in the down pulse of the field margin"
....."I was with you all the way up to simply"!
😆😂😂
Haha 1:33 is brilliant.
"How absolutely divine legion"
There's quite a few Red Dwarf fans in the SF Bay Area. One of the local public channels around here would actually have a telethon to raise money to keep Red Dwarf on the air. One time, tney had the actors who play Lister and Kryten in the studio for the telethon. Two of my buddies introduced me to Red Dwarf. I was hooked!
Wait a minute... I think I've got a way of getting out of here.
Has anyone ever seen "Revenge Of The Surfboarding Killer Bikini Vampire Girls"?
Like
I think that one slipped us by Sir.
Yeah, didn't it get a 0 on rotten tomatoes?
Rimmer you smeghead!!! Classic
When I was about 10, we'd get in on a Friday, grab pizza and hot dogs and gather round a little laptop screen watching these eps before we got the TV to work in our new house. Funny man. Because when you wanna slob, you've got Lister to do it with you.
Lets flag down a black cab and head for real street lol Lister always was my favourite next to Kryten
3:10 Awesome special effects.
Legion looks like he has been transported out of an 80s episode of Doctor Who.
Briliant episode.
most funniest red dwarf episode going LOL
This is one of my favorites!!! This and Queeg!!!
the best, the funniest tv show ever
kryten seems to enjoy that 70s bush xD
one of my fave episodes this one.
I must admit, i lol'd when i got Legion in mass effect 2. all i could think of was this episode 😝
Nothing better than Red Dwarf.
lmao red dwarf is absolutely class !!
i know red dwarf is a comedy but it really is an amazing sci fi programme too. dr who is probibly one of the best things on at the moment with its stories and ideas but red dwarf deffinatly matched up with the ideas and stories too. so inventive and great.
i wonder what itd be like if the doctor met legion :D
one of my fav episodes
One of my favourite episodes XD
Herman Munsters stunt man. Classic
I couldn't agree more, i wish there were more eps to watch.
Jayen
the scene why they are having dinner is hilarious
Ghostbusters: Don't cross the streams!
Red Dwarf: Don't touch the sticks!
Herman munsters stunt man 😂😂😂😂
1:40 He goes through all this spiel about how artsy they are, and then royally stuffs up the pronunciation of "Caravaggio".
2:09 LOL
Why did they cut the clip there? I wanted to watch it to the end. The best bit is when Lister's chop sticks have attracted to something in Rimmers mouth, and his cheek is bulging.
Lister "try swallowing it!"
Rimmer "I have, three times"
WHY THEY CUT THAT OFF :(
Maybe they want you to pay to watch the rest.
You just described the Tea Party :D lol
BBC Worldwide is a "commercial subsidiary" of the BBC.
brilliant sketch...thanks muchly
I always thought that it looked like what was left in the shower drain. But it is called Mimosian cuisine.
I met Chris Barrie today :)
Lucky!
kryten is from my hometown, i'm so proud!
w00t for northampton!!!
Which is 25 miles away from where I live. Yes!!
classic episode!
Answer me this:
What is that thing on Rimmer's waist that looks like a calculator? That couldn't be his hard-light remote belt, could it? He had it on at the beginning of this episode before he became a hard-light hologram.
Egad I miss this show...
Just found this show its hilarious
I'm going to have to get some of those Anti Matter Chopsticks in for Christmas dinner.... um, and a boomerang spoon.
Red Dwarf rocks
Yes, and earlier in the episode, Lister has his appendix removed for the second time...
“Mr. Rimmer, in a hard light body, you can do anything a human can do. With the added bonus that you’re practically indestructible.”
Rimmer is basically a literal walking shield! Although I can say he is a pseudo-immortal. Emphasis on the “pseudo”.
A classic episode in my favourite series . Legion in reality is Stephen Fry
When did Stephen Fry ever imprison anyone?
That "light switch" looks suspiciously like my thermostat, to be honest. Isn't that actually a thermostat?
Pin the pointy stick on the weather girl is a great game
I think 3:28 is one of the funniest moments in the entire series
Where can I get a pair of Mimosian antimatter chopsticks? Those would be so awesome to take to a restaurant!
@TamaraAndTheDemon I wish!! I just kinda stood there shaking and was like "omg, I learned all my best school day insults from you!!!" He's such a lovely guy... :) he got really embarrassed when some random person asked him what a "smeg" actually is...XD
I would have voluneteered and stayed there for the rest of my life. Legion would have lived. And don't forget there was a complex in the ship with a hologramatic chamber that allowed you to go anywhere you wanted and do anything to anyone you wanted!
Yeah, but you’ll eventually be overcome with an existential crisis. Having the option of doing anything you want may lead you to depression by not having any goals or a sense of purpose.
